Axles, conveyor parts, crow bars, gears,
logging parts, spindles, shafts, sprockets,
studs, pinions, pump shafts, rams, ring
gears etc, requiring higher strength than
AISI 1045 can provide.

the dimensional tolerance.

Welding:
Readily welded annealed but avoid when
possible if hardened and tempered due to
its effect on the mechanical properties.
Welding if nitrided, flame or induction
hardened is not recommended.
Dimensional Tolerance
Turned:
- Nil + 2mm
Straightness:
1 480
Welding procedure:
Low hydrogen electrodes recommended.
Pre-heat at 200C 300C and maintain
during welding. Cool slowly in ashes,
warm dry lime or sand etc, followed
when possible with a stress relieve.
HEAT TREATMENT
Forging:
Heat to 1150C Hold until uniform
Minimum forging temperature 850C
Cool in ashes, warm dry lime or sand
Annealing:
Heat to 830C 850C
Cool in furnace
Normalising:
Heat to 870C 900C
Cool in still air
Stress Relieving:
Annealed: Heat to 600C 650C
Hardened: Heat to 500C 550C
Cool in still air
Hardening:
Heat to 830C 880C
Quench in oil or polymer
Temper when hand warm
Nitriding:
Heat to 500C 530C and hold for
sufficient time to develop the case depth
required - no quenching is involved.
Tempering:
Heat to 450C 700C Cool in still air
NB. Tempering within the range 200C
420C will result in temper brittleness
and should be avoided
