ON ENVIRONMENT

Massive thrust on renewables to increase share of clean energy

More than 1 lakh solar pumps sanctioned in the past year
Solar pumps helped lakhs of farmers increase output, income and
also provide drinking water.
Drinking water problem will be solved for more than 7.6 lakh
families through solar pumps for drinking water
UNNAT CHULHA ABHIYAN provides improved cook stoves for clean cooking, thus saving
the lives of our mothers and sisters. 3.5 lakh cook stoves were sanctioned last year.
Compulsory crushing and washing of coal to reduce ash transport by linking plants to
their closest mines

Massive thrust for MAKE IN INDIA program: Orders of more than ` 100,000 crores
being placed from NTPC, Coal India, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd., Powergrid
Corporation etc. to kickstart the economy

Domestic industry being encouraged to scale up and become more cost effective
o 1000 MW of solar capacity to be setup by PSUs with solar cells made in India
o Defence establishments will buy 300 MW solar plants
o Similar initiatives across sectors

BEYOND

The PSUs under the three Ministries are committed to active involvement in this effort.
As a first step, they are investing over

` 2,250 Cr. for

over 1,25,000 toilets

separately for boys and girls by 15th August, 2015 particularly in the needy states such as
Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.
After construction, the PSUs will also maintain these toilets for a period of five years thus
ensuring a complete sanitation programme.
Awareness is being created in local communities to improve over all sanitation.

Emergency
Response

Delhi: After transmission tower

collapse in May 2014, central
government worked day and night
to restore power in 15 days which
would have otherwise taken
more than six months

Cyclone Hudhud: Central teams

assigned to restore power in
cyclone hit areas. Damaged
streetlights converted to LED within
six weeks to restore as well as
improve lighting

J&K Floods: Special teams rushed

to the state to restore power on war
footing

Nepal: Helped Nepal's electricity grid

come online after the earthquake and is
now working towards rebuilding the
distribution network
