Course Title: Sociology of Change and Development


Course Code: SOC 211
Credit Units: 03
Course Objectives: This course will provide student outlook on development and
change with respect to India.
Pre-requisites: Students should have basic understanding about the society and the
factors that lead to Societal Change.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. To critically analyse social change in India.
2. To examine the relevance of Sanskritization and Modernization in Indian society.
3. To explain the concept of development in India.
4. To compare and contrast different theories of Social Change and Development.
5. To demonstrate Indian experience of development.

Module I

media, Perspective and Process of social change in contemporary India: Sanskritization, Westerniza
Modernization and Secularization
Module II

Conceptions of development- Economic growth, human development,


social development, sustainable development, Paths and agencies of development-capitalist, socialist, mixed econ
Gandhian, state, market, and non- governmental organizations.
Module III

Indian experience of development- sociological appraisal of
Five-year plan, Social consequences of economic reforms,
socio-cultural repercussions of globalization, social implication of
Info- tech revolution.
Module IV

Descriptors/Topics
Social Change with respect to past. Present and future, Theories of Social Change: Demographic and Biolo
Theories: Evolutionary, Diffusionist and Marxist theory, Technological Deterministic Theory, Linear and Cy
theories of Social change.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

The participation and involvement of students should be ensured through formal


and informal discussions in the class room. They will be encouraged to write short
essays on the local situation and local issues under the guidance of the teacher.
Wherever possible, illustrations should be drawn from the local situation.
