A BRIEF
HISTORY OF
CRYSTAL
PALACE
By Lily Niu

WO R D O F M O U T H M AG A Z I N E

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

Named after The Crystal

Palace originally built in
1851 (a majestic glass and
iron structure finished
for The Great Exhibition
in Hyde Park), Crystal
Palace Park now homes
the remnants of the moved and
reconstructed Penge Palace.
With the palace and its grounds
becoming a hub for entertainment,
education and even sporting events (20
F.A. Cup Finals were held there from
1895-1914), its damage on multiple
occasions including strong winds and
fires has since seen the site become a

major London public park.

In 1954, the same year as The Crystal
Palace was moved and became Penge
Palace, a train station was built in the
area along with new terraced housing
surrounding the park grounds.
Today, Crystal Palace area spans five
boroughs: Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth,
Lewisham and Southwark. Home to
a thriving business and residential
community, a patch dubbed the Crystal
Palace Triangle (consisting of Westow
Street, Westow Hill and Church Road)
boasts a lively atmosphere and features
an eclectic mix of Victorian and
contemporary housing styles.

BEAT
BACK TO
WORK BLUES
By Lily Niu

We might live in a temperate city

amazing as it is, London very rarely rings
true in boasting all four seasons in a
clear cut way but now that summers
almost over, the itch for a holiday has
never been greater! If youve been lucky
enough to have been on an exotic escape
(or two), youll know theres nothing
trickier than touching down at Heathrow
yet again with nothing but exaggerated
black cab fares and miles of traffic to
mentally cope with. Not only that, but
youll have to beat the jetlag and drag
yourself back to work too! While some
feel refreshed and return to work clear
headed and happy, others are certainly
dreading the inevitable ease into what
feels like a monotonous work-life
routine. Depending on the pressure and
level of tension felt within the work
environment, coming back to real life
can be a challenge in itself.
To help soften the tiredness that comes
with bringing home the bacon once more,
weve rustled up some tried and tested
methods thatll see you through until the
festive season begins!
Work to live, dont live to work make
this your mantra and not only will your

day-to-day experience vastly improve,

you might actually surprise yourself by
beginning to enjoy your everyday work
tasks, however big or small they may
be! After all, sometimes a job is quite
literally just a job; not the be-all or endall.
Make plans outside of work for the
evenings, the weekend and even your
lunch breaks. Falling into a routine of
home then work, work then home is easy
but by breaking up habitual tendencies,
you have something to look forward
to and feel much more stimulated as a
result.
Understandably, not everyone has
the luxury of having a job with sociable
hours. For night shift workers and those
in hospitality for instance, long working
hours and a frequently rotating schedule
can leave you exhausted and in need of
good rest. If going out is simply too much
to bear, have friends and loved ones
come to you or even better, maintain
a tidy home sanctuary in which you
keep to yourself! This could be a room,
your sleeping area or even a comfortable
armchair.

Healing Teas

HAWTHORN
By Lily Niu

SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K

With or without ever really looking into it, we all

know that drinking tea is good for us. Whether its a
morning cuppa with milk and two sugars or enjoying a
cool, ginseng tea on a hot summers day, weve all been
programmed to understand that tea, more so than any
other hot beverage, offers a healing touch in more
ways than one.
But just how and why is tea so good for us,
exactly? Surely consuming vast quantities of
sugar throughout the day (all those teaspoons
do add up!) cant be THAT beneficial?
Luckily, English Breakfast tea is simply
black tea and even with the milk and sugar,
research has shown that it might not only
slow or prevent the growth of cancerous cells
but improve artery health too.
In this issue however, weve looked into
hawthorn tea. With the origins of hawthorn
berries stemming from within the continent,
the berries are mostly used for their
medicinal qualities in Austria, Germany,
Switzerland and of course the UK.
Rich in vitamins and antioxidants,
hawthorn berries as well as the trees
leaves and flowers can indeed create a
potent healing brew. Often used as a heart
tonic, hawthorn tea is believed to improve
cardiovascular function through increasing
oxygen and blood supply to the heart, thereby
aiding a persons overall blood circulation.
Additionally, its also helpful for those with
high blood pressure and high cholesterol. By
drinking hawthorn tea, levels of clogging

or inflammation within the arteries are

reduced; once again strengthening your
blood flow.
For women who are experiencing
menopause related hot flashes, hawthorn
tea has been known to ease discomfort and
even smooth over the occurrence of sudden
episodes!
Mostly, tea serves as a fallback for
relaxation and in this respect, hawthorn does
not disappoint! Calming nerves and keeping
anxiety at bay, hawthorn tea works wonders
by relaxing its drinkers without the dreaded
sleep inducing feeling they might experience
from other teas.
As for what active compounds are at work
when you consume hawthorn tea, the plant
and berries are rich in vitamin C (prefect
for those keen on improving their immune
systems) and contains vitamin A and some
B vitamins. Magnesium and potassium are
also present.
Keen on giving hawthorn tea a try? Find
it in your local health store such as Holland
& Barrett!

STREET FOOD

When travelling, street food is an affordable

way to sample the delights of local cuisine that
even residents frequently enjoy after a days hard
work. Here in London, Street Feast and other
street food markets are a fun but overpriced
social experience more centred on cramming as
many #instafood posts on your friends social
feeds than anything else. If only this realisation
actually impacted our desire to go...

BRINNER

Brinner, as in breakfast for dinner, has long

been an unofficial feasting upon tasty brunch
dishes well past its intended consumption. Now,
huevos rancheros, frittatas and even full English
breakfasts are slowly making their way to dinner
tables everywhere.

WAFFLES:

Thisll be fun. Well stay up late, swapping

manly stories and in the morningIm making
waffles! said Donkey to Shrek. There arent
many who wouldnt be tempted by the thought
of waffles after a viewing of Shrek and luckily,
Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor of Heron Tower
is open 24/7 for, youve guessed it, duck and
waffle! Kensingtons Dirty Bones deserves a
well-earned mention for its chicken and waffles
dishcomplete with REAL maple syrup.

FERMENTED FOODS

One word: kimchi. This fermented vegetable

dish from Korea (eaten at breakfast, lunch
and dinner) has been creeping its way into
mainstream Western diets. With appreciation
for European staple sauerkraut generally on the
increase fermented Kefir and cabbage etc.
it looks like this health food trend might stick
around for some time.

BURGERS

Burgers theyre everywhere. From scoffing

down a McDonalds Big Mac to having them
medium rare at your local Byron who proudly
make, as they put it, proper hamburgers
these bad babies have taken over the hearts and
minds of self-proclaimed foodies. Just when you
think there cant be any more to it (a burger, that
is), Tommy Updegrove announces hes to partake
in Dalstons Mr Hyde National Burger Day Event
on August 27. His PYT Pick Your Topping

burger lovers, allowing them to try burgers made
from doughnuts, deep-fried pizzas and breakfast
