HOSPITAL PHARMACY
HOSPITAL PHARMACY (RPS)
The practice of Pharmacy in a hospital setting including its organizationally
related facilities or services

That department or division of the hospital wherein the


Procurement
Storage
Compounding
Manufacturing
Packaging
Controlling
Assaying
Dispensing
Distribution
Monitoring
of medication to in patients (institutionalized patients) and outpatients
(non-institutionalized patients) are performed by
Professionally Competent & Legally Qualified Pharmacists

HOSPITAL PHARMACY (WILLIAM HASSAN)


The department or service in a hospital which is under the direction of a
Professionally Competent & Legally Qualified Pharmacists

The Department
Where all medications are supplied to the nursing units and other
services
Where special prescriptions are filled for patients in the hospital
Where narcotics and other prescribed drugs are dispensed
Where prescriptions are filled for out patients
Where pharmaceuticals are manufactured in bulk
Where biologicals are stored and dispensed
Where injectable preparations should be prepared and sterilized
Where professional supplies are often stocked and dispensed
Where radiopharmaceuticals are dispense
Hospital Pharmacists have become involved in the preparation of
hyperalimentation products, dialysis fluids, intravenous additive programs,
unit dose packaging and unit dose dispensing

In the past clinical pharmacists acted as pharmacologic advisor to


physician concerning pharmacology, toxicology and posology of the drugs.
Today, Clinical Pharmacists are involved in the preparation of patient drug
profiles, recording patient drug history, advising physicians for possible
drug-drug interaction, drug effects on clinical laboratory test results, and
drug food interactions.
DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORY OF HOSPITAL PHARMACY
Hospital pharmacy (apothecary shop) was part of monastery
Hospital pharmacist was the first recognized representative of
pharmaceutical profession
1752- Pennsylvania Hospital was opened
Jonathan Roberts was the first hospital pharmacist
August 21, 1942- establishment of national association
American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) which is based
in Maryland
In the Philippines
1962- establishment of Philippine Society of Hospital Pharmacists
Dr. Rosario Capistrano Tan-first president of PSHP
Ms. Normita Leyesa (MMC)- the president of PSHP
MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR HOSPITAL PHARMACY
Standard I: ADMINISTRATION
Directed by A professionally competent, legally qualified pharmacists shall
direct the pharmaceutical service
Sufficient supportive personnel shall be available to minimize the use of
pharmacists in nonjudgmental task
Teachers Note: 1. setting long and short goals of the pharmacy based on
the trends in health care
2. developing a plan and schedule for achieving these
goals
3. supervising the implementation of the plan and the day
to day activities associated wit it
4. determining the goals and schedules if they are met
Standard II: FACILITIES
There shall be adequate space equipment and supplies for the
professional and administrative functions of the pharmacy

Teachers Notes:
Adequate space for preparation of sterile products, compounding
drugs, area for pharmacists patient consultation, place for drug information
resources to be available ( medical journals ; drug literature)
Standard III: DRUG DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL
The pharmacy shall be responsible for the procurement, distribution, and
control of all drugs used within the institution
Review the physicians medication order prior to dispensing the
drug
Maintain an up to date formulary of drug products
Maintain patient medication profile
Standard IV: DRUG INFORMATION
The pharmacy is responsible for providing the institutions staff and
patients with accurate, comprehensive information about drugs and their
use and shall serve as its center for drug information
Standard V: ASSURING RATIONAL DRUG THERAPY
Maintain patient medication history
Review physicians medication order prior to dispensing
Review patient drug regimen
Standard VI: RESEARCH
The pharmacists should conduct, participate in, and support medical and
pharmaceutical research
