Operations Management
.Time: 3 hrs.

Max. Marks: 100

Note: Answer anyFlVEfull questions.
a.. With the help of a schematic model explain the production system.
(05 Marks)
b. Define Material, Labour, Machine and capital productivities. Explain the major factors
affecting the improvement of these productivities.
(07 Marks)
c. Explain the ideas and contributions of the following personalities.
i} Adam Smith ii) F.W. Taylor iii) Frank Gilbreth iv) Henry Gantt.
.(08 Marks)
a. Biltmore manufacturing company has developed a promising new product. The firm's
management faces. three choices. It can sell the idea for the new product to a company for
Rs 20,0'00/-, it can hire a consultant to study the market and then make decision,.or it can
manufacture and market the product. If management decides to manufacture the product
without a study, it figures there is only a 1 - in - 4 chance of its being successful. A
. product failure cost is Rs 1,00,0.0'01- and successful cost is Rs 5,00,00'01-. If management
decides to hire a consultant to study the market, there is about 50' - 50 chance that a.
favourable market will be found. If the study is unfavourable, management figures that it
can still sell the idea for Rs 12,0'00/-. If the study is favourable, it figures that. it can sell
the idea for Rs 30,0001-. But even if a favourable market is found, the chance of an
ultimately successful product is about 2 out of S. A successful product wiU return Rs
4,90',0'00/- and a product failure cost is Rs 1,10,0'00/-. Even with a unfavourable study a
. successful product can be about one in every ten product introduction. Draw a decision
tree and state which alternative has the higher expected payoff.
(12 Marks)
b. Distinguish between design capacity and system capacity with a neat block diagram.

(08 Marks)

a. Explain the following qualitative forecasting methods.

i) Delphi method ii) Executive opinion method.
(06 Marks)

manager of Aroma Drip Coffee Inc. is trying to plan cash,
personnel and materials and supplies requirements for each quarter of next year. The
quarterly sales data for the past three years seem to reflect fairly the seasonal output
pattern that should be expected in the figure. If Wayne could estimate quarterly sales for
next year, the cash, personnel and materials and suppliers needs could be determined.
