Trustee summarizes library trends

So much for libraries fading away.
During the "communications" segment
at the Sussex Village Board Nov. 10, Trustee
Tim Dietrich -- who serves on the Pauline
Haass Public Library Board -- summarized
an Oct. 29 seminar that he and Library
Director Kathy Klager attended Oct. 29 at
Marquette University on the future of
libraries. Dietrich said the half-day program included presentations on the role of
the library in American life,attitudes
toward libraries, and the public library of
tomorrow.
Dietrich said the lesson he learned from
the seminar was "to see our future we have
to look at our history."
"In 1994, the prediction out there -- I
don't know who made it, it was pretty common knowledge that the people were looking at the technology that was on the horizon at the time and predicted that libraries
were going to go out of business in 10
years," Dietrich said. "The new technology
would take the place of that."
Dietrich noted that before the new
technology was in homes, it was in
libraries.
"So what we learned was libraries are
always going to be on the cutting edge. The
question still remains, though, is what
kind of space needs we will have for the

future. That's something you can't determine," Dietrich said.

He added that plans for future libraries
will need to be diversified with open areas
that can be divided.
"The space needs are going to be
there. It's just a matter of how we use it,"
he said.
Approved
The Village Board approved a jurisdictional transfer agreement with Waukesha
County under which Silver Spring from
Main Street to Waukesha Avenue will be
transferred from the county to the village.
The portion of the road from Main Street to
Hickory Drive will be transferred to the village on Dec. 1, which will allow the village
to relocate Silver Spring where it meets
with Main Street. The portion of Silver
Spring from Hickory Drive to Waukesha
Drive needs to be resurfaced by the county
and stormwater issues also have to be
addressed. That portion of the road of rhe
road is tentatively scheduled to be turned
over to the village in 2019.
Also approved was the purchase of safety equipment through USA Bluebook at a
cost of $10,613.80. The equipment
includes confined space hoists, winches,
harness, and fall protection devices.

Sussex Village Trustee Tim Dietrich speaks

about a library seminar he attended earlier this fall.
Dietrich indicated the replacement of
equipment is needed because it is outdated
with current requirements.
The board also approved an agreement
with the state Crime Information Bureau to
allow the village to have access for background checks.

AN AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK EDITORIAL

Public schools, our great strength

BY TONY EVERS
STATE SUPERINTENDENT

Its time to celebrate Wisconsins

great public schools. American
Education Week is Nov. 16 to 20, an
opportunity to reflect on the importance of our schools and to encourage all
of us to stay invested in this vital public institution.
American Education Week began in
1921 in response to news that a quarter
or more of World War I draftees were not
ready for combat. Many were unfit,
couldnt read, or lacked a high school
diploma. Since that time, weve witnessed a sea change in expectations for
young people. Into the mid-1900s, a
breadwinner could support a family with
minimal formal education. Today, theres
no doubt that a high school diploma is
needed to succeed in America. In fact,
most family supporting jobs require
some education beyond high school.
Our public school teachers are ready
to do their part. Im so proud of them.
With all that has swirled around in the
political and budget spheres, they
havent given up. Each time I visit a
school, no matter where I am in the
state, I see tremendous energy and
engagement in helping our students
learn. Our public school educators are
dedicated to teaching rigorous academic
content. But subject area knowledge
isnt enough. Our teachers also are providing students with skills and habits
that will help them become successful
citizens. Woven into the lessons are critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. I see our teachers nurturing habits like perseverance and
adaptability so that students know how
to keep going even when the going gets
tough.
And, the going is tough. Education
in Wisconsin is a portrait of extremes.

We have some of the top overall graduation rates and ACT results in the nation.
We also have some of the largest graduation and achievement gaps among the
states. The cost in human lives of these
gaps is staggering. Its unacceptable
that Hispanic and American Indian students drop out of school at a rate of one
in four, and African American students
at a rate of one in three. Clearly, we
have work to do.
Our efforts to close the gaps span
many fronts to ensure everyone graduates ready for college and careers. They
have to. The thing with kids is that
theres no just one thing that works.
One student may respond to hands-on
learning or extra academic challenges,
another may engage with an out-ofschool club or mentor, still another may
need special services to overcome a disability. Our public school teachers work
to meet individual needs and build relationships that support student success.
Earlier this year, my Parent Advisory
Council issued recommendations for
strengthening relationships between
schools, families, and communities. The
council centered its work in the
Promoting Excellence for All initiative,
which advocates a race-conscious focus
to meet students and families where
they are and propel achievement.
Valuing backgrounds and cultures is
vital in this work.
Yet the success of our students isnt
only for schools. It is bigger than just
the families with students in classes.
During American Education Week, and
throughout the year, Im asking citizens
and business people, elected officials
and policymakers to engage with your
local public schools. We all have something to offer. We all have a stake in the
success of our students and public
schools.

Hamilton drama presents
The Matchmaker
Hamilton High School Drama invites
community members to attend The
Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder Nov.
12-15 at the Hamilton Fine Arts Center
(HFAC). Shows are at 7 p.m. Thursday
through Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on
Sunday.
Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy merchant in 19th century Yonkers, N.Y., is in
search of a wife and employs a matchmaker, Mrs. Dolly Levi. Dolly subsequently becomes involved with two of
Vandergelder's clerks, several lovely
ladies and the headwaiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce
runs headlong into hilarious complications. After everyone gets straightened
out romantically, Vandergelder finds
himself affianced to the astute Dolly Levi
herself.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for
students under 18 years of age and senior citizens over age 60. They may be
purchased 30 minutes prior to the show
at the HFAC box office. Please note only

Hello! Seeko's my name. Fun and adventure are my

middle names. I love to play! Give paw, catch, leave it
and sit are commands that I know. Did I mention I love
to play? Toys are so much fun, but squeaky toys are my
FAVORITE. My eye contact is excellent for teaching me new tricks. Due
to poor health, my previous owner was not able to care for me and I was
surrendered to Oneida County Humane Society. I'm eagerly waiting for
my new family to come and find me. Since I get really excited about toys
and can play rough, my new home should only have kids over the age of
10. Please no cat siblings for me. A dog sibling would be A-Okay as long
as they weigh over 30lbs. I'm too pushy and overbearing with small
dogs. So no dog parks for me. Until recently northern Wisconsin has

The Germantown boys volleyball team celebrates after topping Nicolet in the sectional final Nov. 5.

VOLLEYBALL

RETURNING TO STATE
Germantown boys top Nicolet in sectional final
The Germantown boys volleyball team overcame an early
deficit in the first game and rallied to close out the third against
Nicolet on the way to a threegame win in the sectional final
Nov. 5 at Homestead High
School.
With the 25-19, 25-22, 31-29
win
over
the
Knights,
Germantown advanced to its
fourth state tournament in five
years. The streak was interrupted
by a loss to Arrowhead in the
2014
sectional
semifinal.
Germantown beat Arrowhead
Nov. 3 to advance to the sectional final.
"Ever since last year the goal
was to get to Wisconsin Lutheran
(College, where the state tournament is held)," said setter Logan
Reindl.

Germantown has been ranked

in the state coaches poll during
the season, including topping
the ranking Sept. 16 and being
tied with Kaukauna for the top
spot in the poll a week later.
Germantown
will
play
Brookfield East in a state quarterfinal at Wisconsin Lutheran
College Nov. 13.
Outside hitter Max Keefe
added that the goal of the season
was to "get back and redeem ourselves" from the sectional semifinal loss the previous season.
Germantown fell behind in
the first game 6-1 but then rallied with a 10-3 run to close out
the game. The teams were even
through the second game but a
five-point run turned the tide for
the Warhawks.
In
the
third
game,

Germantown bolted out to a 4-0

lead but the Knights stayed close
the rest of the way, as the teams
stayed within a point of each
other in the latter stages of the
match. Late in the match,
Germantown relied on several
key kills by Keefe to keep Nicolet
from closing out the third game.
"He's grown so much as a
player," Germantown Coach Brian
Rushmer said of Keefe, noting
that Keefe does not play the club
volleyball season.
Bryce
Thomas
led
Germantown with 15 kills while
Jack Thompsen had three blocks
and Chris Stapelman had 12 digs.
Afterward, Rushmer noted
that Germantown trailed in every
game before rallying for the win.

Menomonee Falls golfers Academic All-State honorees

The Golf Coaches Association of
Wisconsin (GCAW) recently announced
that Cierra Brown, Brooke Leitner,
and
Kaitlin Kirchberger of
Menomonee Falls High School are
Academic All-State honorees for the
girls golf season that just concluded.
Students are nominated by GCAW
member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1) A cumulative grade

point average of at least 3.25, 2) participation in at least 75% of their teams

varsity matches, and 3) are at least a
sophomore in high school. Cierra is a
student-athlete who serves as a great
example to others, proving that academic and athletic successes are not
mutually exclusive.
The coaches association announced
that 307 girls from 89 high schools

have been honored this year for maintaining high academic standards in the
classroom while competing in varsity
golf. In fact, the average cumulative
GPA of this years honorees is an exceptional 3.800. The GCAW was formed by
high school golf coaches in 1986 to help
build Wisconsin's reputation for developing quality junior players by promoting golf in our schools and communi-

ties. Besides honoring both boys and

girls who succeed as student athletes,
the association also selects an annual
All-State team for boys and girls based
on their playing ability. On March 1,
2012 a newly established award honoring the high school team with the highest cumulative GPA was also begun.
The girls team award will be announced
in February, 2016.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by my

dentist to have laser surgery to fix my gum
disease. Can you comment on whether this is
safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If
our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin pigment
removal, frenectemies or evaluation and
treatment of gum problems we invite them to
call us for an examination at 414-464-9021.

Pilgrim Road
project near
completion
The reconstruction of Pilgrim Road
between Main Street and Megal Drive is
on schedule to be completed with in
the next few weeks.
The project has involved the reconstruction of the bridge over Hwy.
41/45, the creation of one access point
onto Pilgrim Road for the HarleyDavidson and Wacker Neuson operations, and the installation of infrastructure improvements along the corridor.
Brian DeNeve, spokesperson for the
state Department of Transportation,
said work that remains to be done on
the project includes completion of
median turn lanes and islands, along
with barrier wall work on the freeway
and on the ramps. He said that all
lanes on the bridge and on Main Street
are expected to be open by early
December. "As of now, the project is
on time and within budget," he added.
