GeneralAudience
Theprimaryaudienceconsistsofeducatorsatdifferentlevels.Theseteachersteachfrom
elementarytohighschoolandwishtolearnaboutthenewlearningmanagementsoftware,
Canvas.Theprimaryaudienceistobetaughtandgainknowledgeformawidevarietyofdigital
toolswithinCanvassuchascreatingassignments,editingpages,andworkingwithacalendarof
events.Thebroadrangeoftopicsinthecourseallowsfortheteacherstobeinterestedinthe
topicsthroughthestaffdevelopment.Also,teachersinthecountyarereceivingstaff
developmentonCanvasinastructuredfashionandtheyareallowedtodecidethewayinwhich
theywillimplementitintheirclassroom.

ProblemIdentification
NewtonCountySchoolshaspushedoutanewstudentlearningmanagementsoftwareforthe
20152016schoolyear.Thesoftwarehasahighlearningcurveandmanyteacherswerenot
preparedforitsimplementation.Canvas,thenewsoftwareathandrequiresanunderstandingof
howwebclassroomsaresetupandrun.Anyteacherwhowishestocompleteandlearnmore
aboutCanvaswillalsobeprovidedseveralsessionsofstaffdevelopmentandtheywillreceive
digitalsupportthroughemailcorrespondence.
WiththisyearbeingthefirstoftheimplementationofCanvasinNewtonCountymanyteachers
willbeabletonetworkwithotherstaffandteacherstoreviewovertopicsandconcernstheywill
haveregardingcanvas.Thisbeingsaidmanyofthematerialsandresourcesforthiscourseare
madeatthedistrictlevel.
Asourschoolsystemrollsoutthisnewonlinecoursemanagementsoftwaretofacultyandstaff,
teacherswillneedhelpbecomingaccustomedtothelayoutanduseofCanvas.Eachteacheris
responsibleforcreatingtheirowncourseasapracticerunintotheworldofCanvasandare
requiredtoseekhelpwhenitisneeded.
Canvasutilizestoolsandskillsthatsometeachersmaynotbefamiliarwithandbeingableto
providetheskillstoeachteacherwillbenefittheschoolsystemgreatly.Theskillsthatthe
teacherswilllearnbenefitthemgreatlyandtheywillbeabletotakesaidskillsandusethemto
benefitthestudentstheyareinstructing.

Caucasianfemale,34%AfricanAmericanfemale,5%Caucasianmaleand29%African
Americanmale.Theagesofthestaffmembersrangefrom2279.The

AlthoughmanylearnershaveusedaformofStudentManagementsystembefore,few,ifany
haveactuallyimplementedorevengiventhoughttotheimportanceofusingandimplementinga
programlikeCanvasintheclassroom.
AttitudesTowardContentandAcademicMotivation
Theimportancetolearnandmasteronlinetoolshastakenamassiveshiftintherecentyears.
Teachersatallschoolsunderstandtheimportanceofincorporatingtechnologyintotheir
classroomsandwouldliketoknowaneasierwaytohavestudentsaccessandturnin
assignments.
Theissuehowever,isthatmanyteachershavebecomeoverwhelmedwiththelearningcurvethat
theymustdefeattolearnhowtouseoneofthemanydifferentclassroommanagementsystems
thatareavailableonline.Teachershavereportedhighlevelsofconfusionwhenusingoneof
thesesystemsforthefirsttime.
Learnersstatedthattheycaughtonquicklywhentheyweregiventhepropertrainingandtimeto
learnhowtouseinstructionaltools.Whensurveyed,50%saidtheydidnotfeelconfidentin

learninghowtocreateandimplementtheironlineclass.Whiletheother50%feltconfidentbut
stillcitedthattheyhadissuesnavigatingthesiteandlearningsomeofthetoolsthatareoffered.

Thelearnersexpressedpreferencetoonlineprofessionaldevelopmentversusphysicalmeetings.
Theypreferredtoworkanddiscussissuesthroughonlineboardsversushavingtosubmitor
questioninformationtoapresenterforreview.Thisinformationwasgatheredthroughasurvey
andteacherinterview.
AttitudeTowardsTeachersandSchool
Seeingasthegroupstaughtareteacherstheyexpressedahighlevelofappreciationforthework
andcommitmentofteachers.Theywerepositiveandheldaninvitingenvironmentforthe
instructorsofthisstaffdevelopment.
Commonerrorsmadebynovicelearners:

TheschoolislocatedsouthofAtlantainatownknownasCovingtonwherethemedianincome
isbelowthenationalaverage.Theclassroomteachersrangefrom130yearsofexperiencethat
teachinaTitleIschool.ThesubjectstaughtrangefromBusiness,Healthcare,Cosmetology,to
Agriculture.Manyoftheteachersarealsoassociatedwithanextracurricularclubandspend
manyhourswithstudentswaypasttheregularworkinghours.Theteachersalsoreportedother
responsibilitiesbesidesthoserequiredofthematwork.Covingtonproducesanenvironmentof
communityandmanyoftheteachershaveexpressedthatthisisamajorreasonforthemtostay
teachinginthecounty.

FormytaskanalysisIconductedtheresearchusingbothatopicanalysisandaprocedural
analysistoensureIcapturedasmuchrelevantinformationaspossible.AsIexpectmostofthe
learningtobeprocedural,Istartedbycreatingadetailedoutlineofthestepsrequiredtoperform
eachprocedureinnavigatingtheonlinecoursemanagementsoftware.ToensureIdidnotmiss
