We employ our expertise in managing integrated,

supply chain is defined by many criteria: it respects
people and human rights; produces safe and wholesome
food; treats animals humanely; promotes the best,
most responsible agricultural practices; and reduces
environmental impactprotecting land and conserving
scarce resources. It also creates economic value: driving
efficiencies, reducing waste and increasing yields.

FOOD SeCuRity
Food security exists when everyone has access to safe,
nutritious, affordable foodwith consistency. Its the
worlds greatest solvable issue, as the problem is not
the existence of enough food, but uneven access to
it. Achieving food security is a long-term journey that
requires education, greater efficiency, perpetual effort
and the establishment of trust between countries for
successful free trade. We work with organisations in the
commercial, non-profit and government sectors to enable
open markets, train and equip farmers, stimulate local
economies and move food to the places where its needed.

Our crushing facility in Barcelona processes more

than 65,000 metric tonnes of soy each month for
a range of customers across Spain and Portugal.

We established our specialisation in crushing and refining in 1960soon

expanding into other industries. Our soy crushing plant in Tarragona, Spain,
was the first built by Cargill beyond the borders of the US, prompting the
construction of several more facilities in the years to come. Piensos Hens,
the companys first animal feed company in Spain, began operating in Reus,
Zaragoza and LHospitalet, and by the 1970s, a second soy crushing facility
was established in Barcelonasignaling our increasing success in the Spanish
crushing industry.
By the mid-80s, the crushing process had been applied to sunflower meal as well.
The crushing, refining and bottling of sunflower oil became a centerpiece
of the Cargill Spain portfolio, as did malt production based out of Madrid.
To the west, Portugal saw increasing import and export activity at its ports along
the Atlantic. Feed plant, grain and protein emerged as major trading entities for
the Portuguese business, prompting the establishment of facilities in the capital
city of Lisbon, positioned along the Tagus River.

B:11.9429

Mirroring the establishment of Cargill as a company

over 150 years ago, the story of success in Spain
and Portugal also begins with a seed.

B:8.5177
T:8.2677

At the turn of the 21st century, a significant shift occurred in

our businessand with it, exponential growth. In 2000, Cargill began
casting increased emphasis on food and food ingredients.
The acquisition of Agribrands and Degussa Food Ingredientstwo
leaders in the food and nutritional systems arenaand Cerestar,
Europes premier producer of starches and sweeteners, strengthened
our portfolio and steered the course of our work, prompting initiatives
like a collaboration with a local olive oil cooperative to distribute
specialty Spanish olive oil in a global capacity.
Another key acquisition occurred in 2011 with the purchase of Provimi,
a global animal feed producer with an 85-year heritage. The milestone
renewed our longstanding relations in the animal nutrition sector, and
today, we serve the industry out of our locations in Ovar and Alverca
do Ribatejo in Portugal, as well as facilities in Colmenar Viejo and
Mequinenza in Spain.
In nearby Martorell, Cargill Spain & Portugals headquarters is home
to our starches and sweeteners production, positioned with close
proximity to many of our operations serving grain and oilseeds, refined
oils, texturizing solutions and malt.

To further develop the industry,

we begin training local farmers
in sunflower harvesting, helping
them bring quality oilseed to

Marketing Manager / Sanchez Cano

Launching a new brand

in a competitive market
has its risks, but Sanchez
Cano saw it as a chance
worth taking.

After three decades of sourcing core products from Cargill, Spanish

confectionary company Sanchez Cano turned to us againthis time,
with an entirely new initiative: a sugar-free chewing gum recipe for
Fini. It was a major undertaking that called for close collaboration
at an accelerated pace. Because the product would be distributed
globallyto countries with disparate temperatures and humidities
it would require a high degree of stability (without affecting flavour
and texture).
For 17 months, a multidisciplinary team of Cargill and Sanchez Cano
experts explored countless formula iterations before landing on
a recipe from Cargills polyols portfolio. Containing a unique
combination of sorbitol, maltitol and isomaltsugar alcohols with
low-caloric sweetenersthe product premiered to great success,
rivaling other well-recognised brands and achieving a 20% increase
in sugar-free chewing gum market share during its first two years.
Achieved on-time and on-budget, Fini stands as a testament to big
ideas realised through expertise and innovation. Its been a major
success for us, said Jos Morata, Sanchez Canos Marketing
Manager. Today, our product is available across Europe, North
America and South Americaand we hope to continue gaining
ground in the years to come.

In 1981, MC Riosa Portuguese agribusiness distributor

headquartered in Albergariaturned to Cargills animal nutrition
division for support in consolidating their agribusiness and expanding
their work within the animal feed sector, which accounts for more
than 50% of annual revenue.
Understanding market requirements, product trends and customer
preferences, we launched Rural Refresh, two new product lines for
distributors rooted in technological research, specific consumer
requests and unsatisfied needs. The offerings were immediately
leveraged by MC Rios.
By providing accurate, technology-based nutrition systems, we
helped MC Rios improve animal diets, satisfying the intake and health
security demands from their backyard farmers, as well as optimising
the conversion rates and product return from both professional
producers and dairy cows.
Cargills resourceful approach to feed health and safety and their
constant search for excellence are critical, differentiating factors,
said Carlos Rios, who owns MC Rios. It makes us believe in superior
performance and the opportunity for future success.

Feeding formula is
one of the most highly

the marketand Cargill
stands as manufacturers
partner of choice.

The food we eat in our first months of life is perhaps the most
important nourishment we receive in our lifetime. Early nutrition
shapes our developmentboth physically and cognitivelyand can
set the tone for long-term health, reaching well into adulthood. Infants
require food with high energy content, which is found naturally in
breast milk and via vegetable oils in feeding formulas.
Brand awareness in the infant feed market is quite significant
mothers seek a product with functional ingredients, such as fat
formulas that facilitate digestion, and strong adherence to industry
health standards. The segment is strictly regulated, requiring close,
precise control of the supply chain to eliminate contaminants and
perpetual awareness of changing regulations.
Recognising an opportunity to create a distinct offering in the market,
two of our business units joined forces, leveraging the broad scope of
oil blends crushed and refined on-site in our Spain facilities. With a
dedicated technical team staying current on regulatory updates and
developing tailor-made solutions, our approach has proven to be the
most reliable, long-term and cost-efficient in the industry.

as the new product base in their formula. The formulation offered
ultra-high protein levels, minimal fibre and, unlike soy, zero
anti-nutritional factors.
The revamped product was delivered in just six months, allowing
the manufacturer to swiftly reduce its reliance on soy and reduce
production costs. The project has led to new plans in other parts
of Europeour customer intends to replicate the success of this
partnership again and again.

An innovative refrigerator
improves food storage,
eliminating waste to feed
thousands more.

For many Cargill employees, volunteering with the Barcelona Food

Bank is a full-time commitment. Leveraging their food industry
connections, our teams help to recover food from retailers and
suppliers, then deliver it to the Barcelona Food Bank where its
distributed to hundreds of thousands of people living in low-income
communities across the city.
In 2013, a persisting problem was addressed by our team: for every
meal served, dozens went to waste due to an inability to keep mass
quantities of perishable food refrigerated until preparation. Using
donated funds and volunteered manpower, we built a walk-in
refrigerator that ensures the cold chain, keeping perishables
properly chilled and safe until preparation time.
The food banks really appreciate our support, said Joana Tavares, a
trading accountant at Cargills Sant Cugat del Valls operations.
Getting our employees directly involved helps us make a real
connection.
The addition has significantly improved the Barcelona Food Banks
operational capacity. Nearly 27 metric tonnes of additional perishable
food can now be stored in the new walk-in refrigeratoramounting to
wholesome, safe meals for over 150,000 people in need.

Supporting the Down

tarragona Association
Spains Cargill Cares Council connects with an organisation
thats enabling children with Down syndrome to thrive.

Our participation with Down Tarragona takes many formsfrom

financial contributions to on-the-ground activities like the Annual
Cargill Big Walk, a fundraiser first held in 2007 that champions a
new non-governmental organisation each year.
In the autumn of 2013, a record total of 233 Cargill employees
participated in support of Down Tarragona, raising more than
5,500 euros for Agafat al 21, a reintegration programme designed
to help 35 young adults with Down syndrome assimilate into
social and professional settings. Funds raised throughout the
year by our team also contribute to improvements at Down
Tarragonas headquarters in Reusspecifically the revamp of its
developmental sensorial hall, a unique space designed to
engage sight, smell, sound, taste and touch as a means of brain
stimulation and socialisation.
Our team is working beyond the walls of Down Tarragonas
facility, toohundreds of volunteers have rolled up their sleeves
to protect and enhance the environment, tending to gardens,
planting trees and cleaning up the area parks that surround
Spains disabled children facilities.

Each year, hundreds of Cargill volunteers from across Spain and

Portugal unite as members of the Cargill Cares Council, an
employee-led programme that implements strategic community
involvement where its needed most. In Spain, a major focus for
these efforts is the Down Tarragona Association, a non-profit
formed in 2007 that improves the quality of life for children with
Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.
