Color Block Duved Cover

Finished size : Twin, 69 87
No one can debate the practical attributes of a good duvet cover; its so easy to take care of. And lets face it
kids are messy creatures, so this is a perfect project for a childs or teenagers room. The following duvet cover is
for a standard twin-size bed and can be used in a boys or girls room. In this age of high-quality quilt fabric, the
possibilities are endless.
Materials and Supplies
yard each of 4 different fabrics for rectangles C, D, E, and G
1 yard each of 3 different fabrics for rectangles A and H and square B
1 yards of fabric for square F
2 yards each of 2 different fabrics for the backing
Purchased twin-size comforter
36 heavy-duty zipper
2 yards of ribbon
4 buttons 1 in diameter (optional)
For my sons room I chose solid
colors for the color blocking and then
appliqud his favorite T-shirts onto
the center of each block. I used
fusible web and a variety of cool
stitches on the sewing machine.
TIP : Before you get started,
preshrink the fabric. Make a small
diagonal cut at the corners of each
fabric near the selvages to prevent
your fabric from fraying and tangling
in the spin cycle. Then wash, dry, and
press it.

constructing it
All seam allowances are , fabrics are sewn right sides together, and all seams are pressed open unless
otherwise noted.
Making the Duvet Top
1). Sew C to the long bottom edge of A. Press.
2). To make the top section, sew square B to the right-hand side of the A/C unit as shown. Press.
3). To make the middle section, sew E to D as shown. Press.
4). Sew G to the top of block H, press, and then sew the G/H unit to square F to complete the bottom section.
5). Sew the top, middle, and bottom sections together in order as shown, pressing after each addition.
Making the Duvet Back
1). Sew the 5 backing pieces together along the short sides in any order. Press. Trim the backing strip to 5 88.
2). Sew the larger backing panel to the
left side of the strip. Sew the smaller
backing panel to the right side of the strip.
Press.
3). On the wrong side of the duvet back, measure and mark with a pencil 17 in from each bottom corner in the
seam allowance.
putting it together
1. Pin the front and back of the duvet cover, right sides together, at the bottom. With the back panel right side
up, sew from the right-hand corner to the 17 mark, backstitching at the end of the seam. Clip the threads
and sew the rest of the bottom of the duvet closed from the other 17 mark to the corner, making sure to
backstitch at the beginning of the seam.
2. Follow the manufacturers instructions for installing a lapped zipper, with the overlap on the top side of the
duvet cover. Make sure to open the zipper halfway so you can turn the duvet cover right side out later.
3. Pin the remaining 3 sides of the duvet front and back, right sides together, and stitch all around, pivoting at
the 2 top corners. Make sure to overlap the bottom seam or backstitch at the beginning and end of this long
seam.
4. From the ribbon, cut 4 lengths each 18 long. Fold them in half and pin 1 ribbon, through the fold, at each
corner of the duvet cover. Hand stitch in place at the fold, making sure your stitches wont show on the right
side of the duvet cover.
5. Flip the duvet cover right side out and press the outside seams flat.
6. If the comforter doesnt have buttons or loops on each corner, hand stitch a button on each corner. Use the
ribbons to tie the duvet cover to the comforter.
Cozy up with your little one and read a good book while wrapped up in the new linens.
