Gov. Chris Christie said Monday he was opposed to Syrian refugees entering the United
States even orphans under the age of 5 but he
did not join the list of more than 20 other governors who announced that they were taking actions
to prevent the refugees from settling in their
states.
In a radio interview with conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt, Christie said he opposed
having the refugees come to the U.S., saying
when asked by Hewitt that the ban would extend to orphans under the age of 5, since they had
no family to care for them.
I do not trust this administration to effectively
vet the people who are supposed to be coming in,
Christie said. We need to put the safety and secu-

Bill to give licenses to illegals advances; veto vowed

TRENTON - A proposal to allow immigrants who

arent legally in the country to drive legally on New
Jerseys roads took a first step forward Monday,
though Gov. Chris Christie quickly made clear he
wont let it become law.

The Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee voted on party lines to advance
legislation, A4425, which would establish drivers licenses for people who cant prove theyre in the country legally. The licenses would look slightly different
from regular licenses, cost up to $50 more and be
marked in such a way that they couldnt be used for

purposes like boarding an airplane.

Fridays terrorist attacks in France were mentioned often by opponents of the bill, to the dismay of
supporters of the proposal.
What happened in Paris is awful. Its dreadful. We

HOWELL - Township police trying to subdue an inebriated Belmar man at a summer music festival ended
up breaking the mans neck and choking him to death, a
lawsuit claims.
The 20-page wrongful-death complaint by relatives
of 38-year-old Timothy J. Harden claims security officers and possibly staff at the Sept. 5 Souper Groove music festival used excessive and unreasonable physical
force when they restrained Harden, who experienced a

Responding township police then used deadly force,
choking Harden to death, according to the complaint.
We dont condone the drug use or any of that, but
that certainly did not give anyone an excuse to do this
to him, said Thomas J. Mallon, the attorney representing Hardens family. The claim alleges that Harden,
who was volunteering at the festival, suffered fracSee LAWSUIT, Page 4A
