Nelson Pool
Closure Update
Work is steadily progressing on the Nelson and

District Aquatic Centres
pool project, the bulkhead
and approximately 35% of
the pool gutter has been
removed.
Renovations are expected
to take 11 months to complete. The entire aquatic
centre will be closed during
renovations, which includes
the leisure, lap and teaching
pools, steam room, whirlpool and sauna. The pool
change rooms will be closed
intermittently during the
shutdown while the arena,
fitness area, meeting rooms
and offices will remain open.
The NDCC was a modern
facility when it was built in
1972, but pool and mechanical systems are now well past
their expected service life.
The RDCK needs to complete critical upgrades to
the pool area as well as to
mechanical, electrical and
chemical loading systems
to extend the life of aquatic
centre into the coming
decades.
Work plans for renovations
include new deck, gutter,
tank tiles and water proofing
membranes; new underwater lighting; a relocated lifeguard station for better staff
access and supervision; new
sauna and storage; new wall
finishes; new mechanical
systems and heat recovery;
replace electrical panels and
equipment; building envelope repairs; renew change
areas including lockers, fixtures; mechanical/chemical
rooms with loading lift.

Local seniors advocate and Community Response

Network (CRN) Coordinator Sandi McCreight, is offering free seniors information packages and presentations
across the West Kootenay/Boundary.
This project will be done in collaboration with other
CRNs and seniors groups like yours. Packages include
information on a multitude of topics including: end of
life planning, nutrition, falls prevention and much more,
plus the new PRIME (Personal Records In Medical Emergency) kits for each senior. The presentation offered is
Its Not Right! - Neighbours, Friends & Families for Older
Adults. A short video opens the discussion. Lets talk about
ageism, signs of elder abuse and keeping each other safe.
Targeted communities, though not exclusive, include
Castlegar, Kaslo, Trail, Genelle, Fruitvale, New Denver,
Procter, Rossland, Warfield, Salmo and Grand Forks. If
your group of 10+ seniors would like packages/presentation, please call. Limited funding available for space rental

Economy in the US and LOCO (in BC).
During our Gift Circle everyone will be invited to say
what they love to do and might like to offer to the community and also request what they need. Be it a healing
or teaching session, compassionate listening, business
coaching, child care or work exchange, extra produce,
sharing tools, housing, hugs, rides etc.
Two excellent speakers will share their views on Living
local economy - Paul Kelly and Colleen Doyle. Paul Kelly
is the Acting General Manager at The Kootenay Country Store Cooperative. He and his family have a small
farmstead in the Slocan Valley and also runs Revolution
Biodiesel, our local fryer oil recycler. Previously Paul
provided fossil-fuel free delivery of agricultural goods,
worked for Fieldstone Granary in Armstrong, BC and
managed Cedar Creek Cafe in Winlaw with his family.
Colleen Doyle achieved her Masters of Arts in Environment and Management last year with her thesis work
focusing on her role as the Executive Director of Kootenay Carshare Cooperative. She is an avid community volunteer and political advocate.
We start at 6 pm with refreshments and inviting people
to chat with each other about their gifts and needs. Followed by Gift Circle at 6:15, potluck at 6:45 and presentations with Q&A at 7:30 pm.
Please bring a dish to share, local if possible and a list
of ingredients. Everyone is welcome! A donation of $5 is
requested from adults to cover costs.

SNOW DUMP PERMITS

Contractors wanting to use the Complex Snow Dump for depositing
snow will need a Snow Dump Permit. Applications are available
at City Hall, Civic Works and at www.castlegar.ca. Once your
application and fee of $750 is received at City Hall, a Snow Dump key
will then be issued.
Please note: When plowing snow for commercial businesses, the
snow must be contained on site or hauled away. Snow deposited
on City property or streets will be hauled away by City of
Castlegar crews and the resulting costs and fines shall be
forwarded to the contractor and property owner.
EQUIPMENT REGISTRY
The City of Castlegar is updating the Equipment Registry of available
rental equipment for use in operations. If you have equipment
available for winter operations complete an Equipment Registry form
and submit it to the City of Castlegar at your earliest convenience.
Equipment Registry forms are available at Civic Works, City Hall and

The navigational lock at the Hugh Keenleyside Dam will be closed from Sunday, November 29 to

For over ten years, generous Kaslo folk have been supporting a special needs school in Barra De Navidad, Mexico where 50 mentally and/or physically challenged youth
attend daily classes.
While it is a Government school, the only financial/
physical help given by the government is in the payment of
the teachers salaries, everything else needed to operate the
school including a bus and driver, hot meals for students,
supplies and utilities must be found from other sources.
The eye of Hurricane Patricia passed within 23 kilometers of the school and area and as the school was damaged,
the concern is now for the students whose parents are asked
to pay a small weekly fee to keep the school operational.
Most parents are either subsistence farmers who have
completely lost their crops or their work as labourers,
fishermen with useless or damaged boats, or maids in the
modest accommodations which also have been damaged
and are not employed now, obviously the students will not
be sent to school thus endangering not only their education but their social interaction.
The emphasis this year is on fundraising to provide/
supplement school fees until the parents are solvent. Once

2016 Salmo Snow Ghosts Season
The Salmo Snow Ghosts are gearing up for the 2016 racing season. Each year kids from all over the west Kootenays join together to race in the Nancy Green League.
Salmos night skiing offers the unique ability for us to
practice four times a week, two days and two nights. The
Salmo Ski Hill offers great terrain for all skier abilities.
Our certified coaches have a combined 25 years experience
and have turned out some amazing career ski racers. They
can help any level skier gain confidence, speed and agility
while making lifelong friendships. Kids ages five - twelve
are welcome to join the team and start building their skill.
This is a family orientated program run by dedicated
volunteers that is fun for everyone including the parents.
We have great annual fundraisers include a beer gala and
dance, a BBQ and a fun night complete with a torch light
ski parade. Early bird registration ends Monday, November 30. Skiers will start dry land training in December and

Social Dance Society Revived
Were back! At a recent AGM of the Kootenay Dance

Beat Society (KDBS) a new board of directors was formed
after a two year hiatus.
The new slate comprises: Danny Rondeau, president; Sandra England, vice president; Deb Corbett,
treasurer; Jude Milne, secretary along with four directors at large: Evan McKenzie, Maria Baula-Schuh, Fran
Wallis and Martha Stokoe. Ingrid Love is the societys
youth liaison person.
This enthusiastic and multitalented team is looking to
provide more regular social dance opportunities, in the
Nelson area. To kick off their tenure, a Social Dance and
Membership Drive event is set for Saturday, November 21
at the newly refurbished Taghum Hall. Entry to this DJ
event will be $10, which will include the Annual Membership fee to the nonprofit society.
The primary goal of the society is to provide frequent
opportunities for people of all ages to learn new dances,
practice their dance skills, meet new people and socialize.
Society events provide a wonderful place to make new
friends, get exercise and have fun, all at the same time,
says Past President Fran Wallis.
Everyone is welcome to attend on November 21. The
evening will get underway at 6:30 pm with a potluck of
snacks and appies, followed by a beginner/intermediate
Swing mini lesson and social dancing until 11 pm. The
music will include a good mix of Latin, Smooth, Swing
and a little bit of Country.
Future society plans include an official launch party

with live music, to celebrate the societys new year. Members benefits include discounts on the live band events
and sponsored instructional workshops as well fostering
social dancing in the area.
