Social Responsibility Program

At Makati Medical Center, we stand for brilliant practice and good medicine, and
proudly carry on our tradition of being a hospital with a heart.
From the day that the hospital was founded, we have also stood for compassion,
just as our founders have been known to treat both rich and destitute patients
with an equal level of exceptional care.
Barely a year after we opened our doors, we launched our Charity Program. For
over three decades, our doctors and specialists have treated generation after
generation of needy Filipinos under this program.
Significantly, most of the charity cases we have handled were complicated ones
that needed medical expertise and advanced technology, such as neurosurgery, eye
and kidney surgeries, and therapy for cancer.
It was also under our Charity Program that we surgically separated the Clemenia
twins. The twins were fused at their ischial bonestheir hipsin a rare congenital
anomaly known as Tetrapus Ischiopagus.
Realizing that we were a tertiary hospital with expertise that other health
institutions did not have, we contributed to the collective health of the country in
a way that other hospitals could not: we made our advanced treatments available to
the countrys poor.
Through the years, our Charity Program treated thousands of patients who were
referred by the biggest private philanthropic groups and public agencies such as
Alay-Puso, Tahanang Walang Hagdan, World Vision Philippines, Bukas-Palad, Kapwa
Ko Mahal Ko, Damayan and even the social welfare and development department.
Until today, our policy at Makati Med is never to turn patients away. Patients are
first examined and given the medical attention they need before they are
screened by Social Services to find out if they can pay, or if they need aid.

In todays financially trying times, however, Makati Med can no longer afford to
provide its services for free to a wide number of patients.
While it still accepts a few charity patients, most indigents are brought to the
hospitals Health Service Program.
Under this program, Makati Med doctors charge absolutely no medical or
consultation fees to patients. Diagnostic procedures requested by doctors at our
Outpatient Service Clinic are charged at 30% less than their usual fees.
Health Service patients are also given free use of the Outpatient Minor Surgery
Operating Room. They can also avail of several discounted surgery packages of the
Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Urology and Neuro-Surgery
Department.
Because patients can also charge a portion of their medical bills first to their
Philhealth (the local government health insurance program), before a 30% discount
is deducted, the actual amount they end up paying comes to less than half of the
usual charges for services and procedures.
Patients are screened by social workers and case aids to see if they pass Makati
Meds economic assessment.
