Presentation
The guide for English1, is organized in four parts, each part has the content of one unit, with themes and
topics for the first semester, according to English Program, from 1 to IV, second review.
The guide English I is based in four units, and in each of them, you will find vocabulary, grammar embedded
in exercises, writing, reading and listening activities. They are organized according to the topics and themes
of each challenge in every unit.
Listening exercises are reinforced with the web-sites to improve not only the listening but also de speaking
and writing.
In every unit you will work with the four skills, and you can evaluate your development with the key answers
at the end of each unit.
If you have problems solving the guide, go to Mediateca and ask for a tutor further information. Its
important to organize your time and work, and at the end, if you have enough practice in the four skills, you
will success with a good mark in the exam.

This guide is prepared to help you making easier the practice in the four skills in English for your exam.
The guide is divided in four units, and in each unit there are activities and exercises, references to web sites to
improve the practice and answers keys at the end of each unit.
Important steps to work in the guide:
Firstly, read carefully the instructions or examples, before you start to work, this can help you to understand
the objective of the exercise.
Then start with the first unit, solve the exercises and check with the key answer at the end of the unit.
After that do the same with the others units, every unit has the key answer at the end.
Go to the references of the web-sites to confirm the work, and check the exercises carefully, but if there are
problems in any unit in speaking or listening, go to Mediateca and ask a tutor to help you.
In Unit I, there are exercises such as: greetings and farewells, verb to be, alphabet, personal pronouns,
possessive adjectives, imperative form, countries and nationalities, numbers, occupations and so on.
Unit 2, we can see simple present tense in third person, prepositions of place, possessive pronouns, question
words with verb to be, etc.
Unit 3, we will work in simple present (questions, affirmative and negative form), ask the time, prepositions
of time and frequency adverbs, numbers and so on.
Unit 4 you can introduce yourself and another person (friend, neighbor, relative), adjectives, clothes, parts of
the body and confirm the knowledge in relation to the verb to be, simple present tense with question word,
and so on.
Finally organize the lists of vocabulary to learn by heart, separate the doubts to attend with your tutor at
Mediateca.

places. For example: your family and the conditions of life; it will be in an oral
and written form. To get it, you need to know the follow linguistic forms
mentioned in this unit.

2.1. USES
The verb TO BE is very important in English. It can be used for example: HE IS A DOCTOR. HE IS AT
THE HOSPITAL. In Spanish is "ser" o "estar". It depends on the context of the phrase. We can say what
the correct meaning is.

For example: Verb TO BE in English expresses the age, which in Spanish we say TENER.

Frequency Adverbs
The frequency adverbs say how often or how frequently something happens.
They are: always, usually, often, never, rarely, sometimes.
sometimes is the only adverb that is written in the beginning of a sentence.
They are written before the main verb, but after the auxiliar verb (do, does, etc) and the
verb to be.
There are phrases that say the frequency and are written at the end of the sentence I eat fish
once a week. We go to the movies twice a month. My mother cooks vegetables three times
a week.

I never get up early on Sundays.
He rarely goes to the zoo.
She sometimes has a sandwich at lunch.

Mom is usually home by four.
