Learning Elements:
RAS System Review
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Identify and list the key components of the 3G Radio Access Network
and be able to state the basic functions of each.
- Identify the interfaces within the RAS (i.e. Iu, Iur, Iub) and give a simple
explanation of the information sent on each.
ATM Essentials
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Describe the main characteristics of an ATM network in terms of function
and capacity as opposed to more traditional methods.
- Explain the different ATM adaptation layer protocols used in Nokia RAS.
- At an overview level, explain how the ATM connection (VPC, VCC) is
structured and how routing is achieved in an ATM network.
- Explain the terms: CBR, UBR, CDVT, PCR, UBR +, MDCR
- Explain the relationship between ATM logical interface and the physical
transmission.
IP Essentials
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Understand the use of IP SubNet Masking in Nokia RAS.
- Explain the different uses of IP in Nokia RAS: user data and control
plane.
HSPA Review
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to
describe:
- HSPA Concept and Functionality
- Nokia Siemens Networks HSPA Implementation.
- Use the appropriate tools to troubleshoot HSPA in the Flexi WCDMA
BTS.
Transmission Principles
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Describe the main characteristics of PDH and SDH transmission.
- List the different transmission media: copper, fibre and radio
transmission systems.
- Understand impact of different fault conditions, for example AIS received
from leased line.
Flexi WCDMA BTS Overview
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- List the Nokia Siemens Networks WCDMA/HSPA BTS products.
- List the main features of each Nokia Siemens Networks WCDMA/HSPA
BTS product.
- List the modules of the Flexi WCDMA BTS.
- Describe the main function of each module in the Flexi WCDMA BTS.
- Describe the installation configuration options for the Flexi WCDMA
BTS.
Flexi WCDMA BTS Commissioning and Configuration Management
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:

- Recognize the different types of Flexi Transport sub-modules by name
and functions
- Describe installation options for Flexi WCDMA BTS
- Practical:
- List the hardware and software requirements for the Flexi WCDMA BTS
Element Manager for Local/Remote usage.
- Configure the personal computer used for local commissioning.
- Configure hardware settings, transmission interfaces and
synchronization settings.
- Configure ATM settings including Virtual Paths, Virtual Channels and
ATM Traffic Descriptors.
- Configure IP and DCN settings for Remote Access and Management.
- Describe the overview of Remote Management operation/administration
of the Flexi WCDMA BTS
- Inspect and check BTS Iub terminations.
- Inspect and check IP and DCN settings for Remote Access and
Management.
- Inspect, check and test the Flexi WCDMA BTS commissioned
configuration and status using the Nokia WCDMA BTS Element
Manager.
Flexi WCDMA BTS Operation and Maintenance
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Theory and Practical:
- Describe the operational functionality of the Flexi WCDMA BTS
- Describe and demonstrate use of the administrative options available for
Flexi WCDMA BTS
- Describe and demonstrate use of maintenance options available for
Flexi WCDMA BTS
- Remove and replace Flexi WCDMA BTS modules
Flexi WCDMA BTS RAS Integration
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- List the elements to be checked when verifying the Flexi WCDMA BTS
is transmitting On-Air
- Demonstrate checking, listing and reporting all Flexi WCDMA BTS alarm
or contrary On-Air indications
- Carry out a WCDMA test call
Licence Management
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Theory and Practical:
- List supported licensed features.
- Activate licensed features.
- Recognise different license types.
Flexi WCDMA BTS Troubleshooting
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Use correct tools to run troubleshooting.
- Recognize and recover the most common alarms in the BTS.
- Recognize current features and failures of the SW Configuration and
compatibility.
- Utilize the SW related documentation in order to manage
troubleshooting.

Target Group

- Use troubleshooting programs in order to fetch units' .log files.


Performance Monitoring
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Retrieve Performance Measurements using correct application.
- Understand different performance statistics available in the WBTS
manager.
- Interpret Performance log files as an aid to troubleshooting.
- Understand the available HSPA configuration options and the impact on
WBTS resources.
Antenna System Features and Testing
- At the end of this Learning Element the participant will be able to:
- Theory:
- List the Antenna System products.
- Describe the Antenna cable installation.
- Describe the functionality of a Bias T and Mast Head Amplifier (MHA).
- Describe the advantages of the FLEXI WCDMA BTS feederless system.
- Describe the process used to identify Antenna System Faults.
- Understand System Traces.
After the training, the participants will be able to:
- Describe the Flexi WCDMA BTS Solution and main features.
- Describe the new software and hardware features
- Describe the Main Network Element Functions and Interfaces of the
Radio Access System
- Describe Different Transmission Media
- Monitor the alarms
- Troubleshoot the alarms
- Replace faulty units
- Run tests
- Use troubleshooting tools
- Use Performance Monitoring Tools
- Make Software and Configuration updates
- Antenna System Features and Testing
Good understanding of: UMTS, ATM in UMTS Networks, IP in Radio Access
Networks. Skilled in: commissioning Flexi WCDMA BTS.
- Courses: 3G SYSTRA, RANESS, 3G Flexi WCDMA BTS Installation,
Commissioning and Integration, Operation Administration and
Maintenance.
Underpinning knowledge & skills:
- Good background understanding of UMTS RAN, ATM, IP. Skilled at Flexi
WCDMA BTS installation and commissioning.
Particpants and their line managers are reminded of the need to have good
experience in the field working with the Flexi WCDMA BTS before attending this
