Dear Enactus,
The purpose of your organization is to improve the quality of life and standard of living for
individuals through student leadership and entrepreneurship. We believe that our proposal of a
brand-new, expanded recycling program at the University of Texas at Dallas will help promote
the vision of Enactus, and help make the program more visible throughout the campus. A large
number of college students throw away the different school supplies that they have accumulated
and used throughout the semester simply because they have no other option, and dont want to
waste space. We are confident that that if you choose to adopt our proposal of a school supply
recycling program here at The University of Texas at Dallas, we will be well on our way to
making our campus a much greener estate. Based on our random surveys from students, we will
come up with a list of supplies that our organization will be recycling. This list will be posted to
the Enactus UTD homepage, our Facebook page, and around campus. The advantage of having
this organization run by student volunteers is that the cost will be significantly low. Our team has
done research on several different green campuses such as Harvard University, to shed light on
how we should implement our program to produce as much benefit as possible. The organization
will be known as IPTR, or I Pledge to Recycle, and will be open to all students and faculty on
campus.

Background
In our current recycling program on campus, every student has the opportunity to be involved,
but we are limited on what they can recycle. Currently, the receptacles are for assorting cans,
plastic bottles, and paper. Also note, our Student Services Building has been certified by the
United States Green Building Council as a LEED Platinum Building, our water and landscape
conservation program this is implemented to help the trees and the city of Richardson. If you
choose to support I Pledge to Recycle, we promise you that student environmental awareness and
involvement will be assured. This program will also help by strengthening our current resume of
the environmental sustainability of our beautiful campus.

Problem

Enactus Proposal

There are two issues that can be addressed by establishing our proposed program. First, is
addressing the large amounts of waste that accumulates daily on campus. The items that we are
proposing to add to the recycling options can be valuable resources. Instead of waste, this will
extend the life of an item that has already produced something useful for a student and will
benefit them again after recycling. The second issue that we can address is student awareness and
involvement of recycling activities on campus. This will help raise membership to your
organization, and add to the already impressive list of environmental sustainability projects that
Enactus has been involved in.
Plan
Once approved by Enactus, we will establish recycling centers in the Spring semester of 2015
throughout the University of Texas at Dallas campus. Beginning in 3 locations, the bins will be
placed in the Student Union, the library, and the School of Management building with the
possibility of adding more centers around campus in the Fall of 2015 semester. These centers
will allow students to donate their partially used school supplies which will be recycles by our
group composed of student volunteers. The supplies we will be concentrating on collecting
initially are spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, and printer cartridges. This program
will be called, I Pledge To Recycle, and we will pass out flyers to spread awareness once the bins
are established.
Next Steps
We will partner with Staples to recycle the spiral notebooks and printer cartridges because of
their cash incentive program for these items. For every spiral notebook we return, they will
donate $2 towards a brand new notebook that we can pass out to students during Welcome Week.
The notebooks would also be distributed with a flyer to raise awareness for our program. For
each printer cartridge turned in, we will receive $3 cash back that can be saved to fund more
recycling bins throughout campus, making it easier for students to access the program.
The pens, pencils, and highlighters collected will be bagged and shipped to the Writing
Instrument Brigade, which is a non-profit organization that recycles these items for free, with a
shipping label provided by the company. The company turns the pens, pencils, and highlighters
received into products such as plastic storage bins. The company has a point system where we
receive $.01 per point, which can be donated back into our program.

We are confident that this professional project team will deliver the continued benefits of
recycling, and the pride of providing a green campus for students attending the University of
Texas at Dallas. If you sign the enclosed duplicate copy of this letter, and return it to us with a
check in the amount of $3000.00, we can begin establishing our bins, assembling our team of
Enactus members, student volunteers, and activating our Facebook and YouTube pages. The rates
for the metal bins in this offer are effective until November 1.
Results
Recycling is one of the best ways for students to have a positive impact on the world in which
we live; we think that the ease of this recycling initiative will appeal to all students. We currently
have options to recycle our trash, as well as unnecessary paper printed in the printing labs; these
bins will seamlessly connect with recycling projects already in place. This will also contribute to
the campus wide effort to continue to be one of the greenest schools in the nation as named by
The Princeton Reviews Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition.
Sustainment
In order for our program to continue to grow in the years to come, we must remain active in
searching for new ways that students can recycle various common items. For example, Nike will
accept used tennis shoes, which a student would typically toss in the trash, to recycle into a gym
floor. Students will even be able to interact with and suggest recycling projects to us through our
volunteer established Facebook and Instagram.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. We hope you will join us in our effort to help make
our campus even more sustainable and green with the I Pledge To Recycle program!
