Maintenance

What is the primary aim of planned maintenance?

To prevent unplanned down time caused by breakdowns and damage whilst
the ship is in operation.
What are the three basic types of shipboard maintenance?
Corrective (remedial), Preventative (planned), Survey (regulatory)
List three examples of preventative maintenance
- Keeping the ships gear in good working order
- Ship cleaning
- Grease routines
- Gear overhauls (overall check) and inspections
List three examples of survey maintenance
- Inspection of ships cranes
- Inspection of closing appliances including watertight doors, hatches,
vents etc.
- The operation of emergency lighting, emergency fire pump and
portable pump
- The condition of life saving appliances and fire fighting appliances

Corrosion
Name three types of corrosion
Rust steel and air, Electro chemical corrosion, Bimetallic corrosion, Stray
currents
List three methods of controlling corrosion on-board
- Paint creating a barrier between steel and air
- Sacrificial anodes connecting a more anodic metal to the same circuit
so it corrodes instead of the other metals
- Impressed currents Supplying a continuous current to the metal
cancel the electrolytic effect
What is a sacrificial anode and how does it work?
These are metals which are more base than the other metals situated in an
electrolyte. The ion flow (current) is taken from the anode rather the other
metals in the area.
Name two materials commonly used as sacrificial anodes
Aluminium, magnesium, zinc

Paint

What conditions should be considered before commencing a painting task?

Sufficient time, good weather condition (warm, dry and not too windy),
sufficient paint, tools and equipment including PPE
What basic safety precautions should be taken before commencing surface
preparation of a paint project?
A risk assessment is conducted by either a JSA or Tool box meeting, data
sheets are referenced to ensure correct preparation and safety data sheets
for cleaning products used in the preparation are referenced.
What hazards would you expect to encounter when removing old paint from
a rusty surface using mechanical descaling tools?
- Flying debris from paint chips and rust
- Dust filled atmosphere
- Noise from needle guns and angle grinders
- Sparks from needle guns and angle grinders
- Trip hazards from air hoses and tools
What safety precautions would you take to reduce those hazards?
Use PPE
- Goggles for eyes
- Dust mask for dust filled atmosphere
- Ear plugs for noise
- Hot work permit for sparks
- Overalls, gloves and safety boots
- Arrange air hoses so that they run flat on deck if possible
Where would you find information about the preparation and application of a
paint to a surface?
From the paints data sheet and some core information from the label on the
paint tin.
Where would you find information about the safe use, transport, storage and
chemical composition of a paint?
From the safety data sheet
When painting a surface, list four considerations that would enhance the
performance of the paint.
- Correct preparation of the surface to be painted
- Correct preparation of the paint to be used
- Proper storage of the paint
- Conditions at the time of painting
- Standard of workmanship
- Proper supervision

What are the ideal conditions for the application of paints to a surface?
Warm, dry, dust free and unpolluted condition
What
-

hazard may develop when painting inside a ship?

Fumes or vapours may affect the painters lungs and cause intoxication
Fumes and vapours may be flammable and become explosive
Stinging of the eyes
