Onenight,HarryhasavisionthroughtheeyesofVoldemort'ssnakeNagini,possessedbyVoldemort,
attackingRon'sfatherArthurWeasley.HarryinformsProfessorMcGonagallandDumbledore,andMr.
Weasleyisrescued.DumbledorearrangesforHarrytotakeOcclumencylessonswithProfessorSnapeto
protecthismindagainstfurtherinvasionsbyVoldemort.DuringoneOcclumencylesson,Snapeiscalled
awayandHarry,leftalone,looksintoSnape'spensieve,viewingamemoryofhistimeasastudentat
Hogwarts.Harryseeshisfather,JamesPotter,andSiriusbullyingSnape.SnapecatchesHarryand,
enraged,refusestocontinuethelessons.
Oneevening,UmbridgeisgivenatipoffaboutDumbledore'sArmybyMariettaEdgecomb,whoin

ProfessorDumbledoreunderminesherpowerbyallowingTrelawneytocontinuelivingattheschool,
andhiresFirenze,acentaur,totakeherplace,inspiteofUmbridge'sprejudiceagainstparthumans.
Suspectingthathewillbenext,HagridconfessestoHarry,RonandHermionethathehasbroughthis
gianthalfbrother,Grawp,toHogwarts,andhiddenhimintheForbiddenForest,withtheintentionof
eventuallyintroducinghimtohumansociety.HagridasksthethreeofthemtolookafterGrawpifhe
himselfmustleavetheschool.Sureenough,UmbridgeleadsapartyofAurorstoattackHagridinhis
houseonenight.Hagridoverpowersthemandfleestheschool.McGonagall,tryingtodisruptthe
violence,isbadlyinjuredandisputinSt.Mungo'sHospital.
OnthelastdayofOWLtests,HarryhasavisionofSiriusbeingtorturedbyVoldemortinthe
DepartmentofMysteries.HetriestoillegallyuseUmbridge'sofficefiretocommunicatewiththeOrder
ofthePhoenix'sheadquarterstomakesurethevisionwasgenuine,andistoldbyKreacherthehouseelf
thatSiriusisindeedattheMinistry,beforeUmbridgecatchesHarryandhisfriendsintheact.Snapeis
summonedtoprovideVeritaseruminordertoquestionHarry,butheclaimstohavenofurtherstocksof
thepotionleft.RememberingthatSnapeisalsoamemberoftheOrderofthePhoenix,Harrygiveshim
acrypticwarningaboutSirius'sfate,butSnapeclaimstohavenotunderstoodit.
UmbridgedecidestousetheillegalCruciatusCurseonHarrytointerrogatehimonSirius'swhereabouts.
Shealsorevealssheherselforderedthedementorattackonhim,intendingtohavehimeithersilencedor
discredited.Hermioneintervenesandinordertocreateadistraction,convincesUmbridgethattheyare
hidingaweaponofDumbledore'sintheForbiddenForest.HarryandHermioneleadherintoanareaof
theforestinhabitedbycentaurs,whereUmbridgeprovokesthemintotakinghercaptive.Thecentaurs
arefuriousuponlearningthatHermioneusedthemtodoherbiddingandturnonthepair,butGrawp
arrivesandclasheswiththecentaurs,allowingHarryandHermionetoescape.
Luna,Ron,Ginny,andNevillejointhemintheforestandallsixflytotheMinistryonthestrals,
expectingtofindandrescueSirius.OnceintheDepartmentofMysteries,Harryrealizesthathisvision
wasfalselyplantedbyVoldemorthowever,hefindsaglassspherethatbearshisandtheDarkLord's
names.DeathEatersledbyLuciusMalfoyattackinordertocapturethesphere,whichisarecordingof
aprophecyconcerningHarryandLordVoldemort,whichisrevealedtobetheobjectVoldemorthas
beentryingtoobtainforthewholeyear,theDarkLordbelievingthattherewassomethinghemissed
whenhefirstheardtheprophecy.Luciusexplainsthatonlythesubjectsoftheprophecies,inthiscase
HarryorVoldemort,cansafelyremovethemfromtheshelves.Harryandhisfriends,soonjoinedby
membersoftheOrder,enterabattlewiththeDeathEaters.Amidstthechaos,BellatrixLestrangekills
SiriusandHarryfacesVoldemort,whounsuccessfullytriestopossessHarryinanattempttoget
Dumbledoretokilltheboy.DumbledoredoesnotdosoandVoldemortescapesjustasCorneliusFudge
appears,finallyfacedwithfirsthandevidencethatVoldemorthastrulyreturned.
Inhisoffice,DumbledoreexplainsthatSnapehadunderstoodHarry'scrypticwarning,andhad
subsequentlygottenincontactwithSirius,learningthathewasstillatGrimmauldPlace.AfterHarry
failedtoreturnfromtheForbiddenForest,SnapededucedthathehadgonetotheDepartmentof
MysteriesandalertedtheOrderofthePhoenix,allowingthemtotravelthereandsaveHarryandhis
friends.ItisrevealedthatduringtheChristmasholidays,KreacherhadinterpretedacommandofSirius's
asanordertoleavethehouse,andwenttoNarcissaMalfoy,thewifeofLucius,andtoldthemabout
HarryandSirius'scloserelationshipVoldemortsubsequentlyrealisedthathecouldlureHarrytothe
DepartmentofMysteriesbytrickinghimintothinkingthatSiriuswasindangerthere.
Dumbledorethenexplainstheprophecy:BeforeHarrywasborn,ProfessorTrelawneypredictedthata
boywiththepowertodefeatVoldemortwouldbeborn,wouldbemarkedasanequalbyVoldemortand
havepowerunknowntohim,andthatoneofthepairmustkilltheother,for"neithercanlivewhilethe
othersurvives".Voldemortlearntofthefirstpartoftheprophecy,andsubsequentlytriedtomurder

Harrycomestotermswiththeresponsibilityoftheprophecy,butmournsforthelossofhisgodfather.
Lunacomfortshim,tellinghimaboutherandherfather'sbeliefinheaven.Harrythenfindsanoldhand
heldmirrorinhisdormitorythatwasagiftfromSirius.HerealizesthatSiriuswouldnotwanthimtobe
depressedonthematter,andresolvestocontinuefightingVoldemortstill.

Thenovelwasalsowellreceivedbycritics.RowlingwaspraisedforherimaginationbyUSAToday
writerDeirdreDonahue.[10]Mostofthenegativereviewerswereconcernedwiththeviolencecontained
inthenovelandwithmoralityissuesoccurringthroughoutthebook.[11]
TheNewYorkTimeswriterJohnLeonardpraisedthenovel,saying"TheOrderofthePhoenixstarts
slow,gathersspeedandthenskateboards,withsomersaults,toitsfuriousconclusion....AsHarrygets
older,Rowlinggetsbetter."[12]However,healsocriticises"theonenoteDracoMalfoy"andthe
