COURSEWORK ON JUNCTION DESIGN

SECTION A: BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A1.

The Site
D
Road A-C
Design speed = 50 k.p.h.
Dual carriageway
Each carriageway has width = 7.3 m
Central reserve width = 2.5 m
C

Road D-B
Design speed = 50 k.p.h.
Dual carriageway
Each carriageway has width = 7.3 m
Central reserve width = 2.5 m

Design requirements:
a)
b)

The minimum width of central reserve is 1.75 meters.

The average spacing between vehicles in the queue is 5 meters per pcu.

A3.

Analysis Period

The morning peak occurs during the hour from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The analysis period will be
from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., divided into eight 15-minute time slices.
For the period from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., the traffic flow is equal to 70% of the design flow.
For the period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the traffic flow is equal to 80% of the design flow.
During the morning peak period from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., the demand profile is represented by a
normal curve with the highest point occurring at 8:30 a.m. This peak demand is equal to
125% of the design flow.
SECTION B: TRAFFIC SIGNAL DESIGN
B1.

Geometric and Signal Design

Using a scale of 1:500, hand sketch a suitable layout for the signalized junction (computer
drawing is not acceptable). When designing your layout, take into account all relevant
geometric features of signalized junction design. The corner radius is 10 meters. Reference
should be made to Transport Planning and Design Manual Vol. 4 for details of junction
layout. Design the lane markings and phasing diagram for the junction control. Reference
should be made to Transport Planning and Design Manual Vol. 3 for details of road
markings.
B2.

Capacity Analysis

Use OSCADY to optimize the signal settings and analyze capacities, delays and queues for
each approach and for each time segment.

SECTION C: ROUNDABOUT DESIGN

C1.

Geometric Design

Using a scale of 1:500, hand sketch a suitable layout for the junction (computer drawing is
not acceptable). When designing your layout, take into account all relevant geometric
features of roundabout design. Reference should be made to Transport Planning and Design
Manual Vol. 2 for details of junction layout. In particular, check that your layout provides for
adequate deflection of cross movements to ensure safety.
C2.

Capacity Analysis

Use ARCADY to analyze capacities, delays and queues for each approach and for each time
segment.

SECTION D: EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE DESIGN

D1.

Evaluation of Junction Performance

Evaluate the performance of the two alternative designs for the junction using traffic signals
and roundabout. Use the following criteria to evaluate junction performance:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)

reserve capacity or design flow capacity ratio

traffic delay
queue length
land intake (including any additional road space taken from the central reserve)
accident rates

For the evaluation of accident rates, simple accident analysis should be adopted and the
following assumptions could be made:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

The road condition is inter-urban.

There are no pedestrians crossing the junction.
The vehicle composition consists of 100% private cars.
24 hour (AADT) traffic count factors should be adopted and the average peak hour
flow is equal to 8% of the 24-hour flow.

Compare the performance of the two junction designs.

D2.

Recommendation

Recommend a preferred junction design and state clearly your reasons for making this
recommendation.

SECTION E: SUBMISSION OF REPORT

Please submit (1) your report, (2) a scanned copy of your hand drawings in prescribed scale,
and (3) a set of computer outputs, in three separate PDF files via Moodle system not later
than 21 November 2015.
Please be reminded that plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
