CRIMEFILE
WITHIN the last month
six motorbikes have been
stolen from the Neston area.
Specific streets have been,
Ringway, Eldon Terrace,
Brook Street and Jonson
Road.
Other crimes reported to
police in Neston include:
l Station Road Three
bicycles, which were locked
together, were stolen from
a detached garage after
thieves cut the wiring to the
security light cut.
l Church Lane, Burton
A large amount of damage
was caused to a derelict
property after intruders
broke in, smashing several
windows and starting a
small fire in an upstairs
cupboard.
l The Royal Arcade,
Chester Road A man
was arrested after a brick
was thrown through the
window of hair salon.
l Briardale Road Anti
cat plastic fence topper
strips were taken.
Hadlow Road Two box
hedge plants in plastic
planters were taken from
the front of the house.
l Brook Street car park
Two men were arrested
on suspicion of smashing
their way into Citroen
Dispatch and Ford Transit
vans. The incident was
captured on the councils
CCTV.

Pudsey and pyjamas

Pupils at Neston Primary School supported the BBCs
Children in Need campaign in November, coming
to school wearing spots, pyjamas and Pudsey
paraphernalia, raising over 200 on the day.

A FREE to use public bicycle
pump has been installed in
Neston town centre.
It will provide cyclists with
a convenient pump for
deflated tyres. A permanent
fixture, it is bolted to the
ground and is suitable for
both types of tyre valve as
well as a handy gauge to
check pressure.

Council said: This is an
original and quirky facility
for the Town Centre and
reinforces the town councils
commitment as a cycle
friendly town whilst also
promoting healthy living.

Cadets see vintage Spitfire

In 1940, during the Second World War, Britain was on the brink of invasion. An unlikely
ally, came to the rescue and helped our cause. The tiny Kingdom of Lesotho (formerly
Basutoland) presented Britain with 24 Spitfire fighter aircraft, enough to equip two RAF
Squadrons. No 72 (Basutoland) Squadron is one of the few Second World War squadrons
that are still in existence today.Lesothos actions were recognised in 2010, when a full scale
replica of a Spitfire,

of thanks from Britain.

constructed in the Spitfire
Heritage Trusts workshops
in Cornwall, and, recently

A report considered
at the councils
November meeting
identified these
improvements as
having been included
in a feasibility study conducted in 2014
covering sites managed by Brio Leisure for
Cheshire West & Chester Council. Presenting
the report, Cllr Mike Shipman said the clear
impression was that sources of funding
thought to have been identified last year
may not now be available and there may be
a need to look elsewhere.
Proposing a motion calling on CWaC to
fully fund the needed improvements, Cllr
Tracey Fleetwood said that the slow decline
of the local recreation centre vital for the
health and wellbeing of the local community
including schools was painful to see.
Urgent action was needed, and with a new
high school build starting in a few months
time improvements needed to be agreed
now.
The town council says that full
improvements to the local centre should be
given priority funding over spending in other
parts of the Cheshire West borough.

Neston Recreation Centre User Group, to
include representatives of the Town Council,
so that it may more easily consult with users
about current facilities and about further use
and development for the centre.
Cheshire West & Chester Council is being
asked to enter into discussion with Neston
High School, Brio Leisure and Neston
Nomads FC with a view to using part of the
Mostyn House S106 resource to part-fund
an additional all-weather pitch at the High
School site.

Council backs MPs call

for better train service
A call for a half-hourly service on the BidstonWrexham rail line through Neston by local MP
Justin Madders has received the enthusiastic
backing of Neston Town Council.
As well as seeking support from Arriva Trains Wales,
the Welsh Assembly and the Transport Department, Mr
Madders has drafted a public petition and has asked
the town council to promote it.
The council has instructed its transport working group
to ensure that the number of signatures is maximised.
The petition builds on the work the Town Council has
been doing to improve the woefully inadequate public
transport facility in Neston.
But there is also the urgent question of the huge
difference between ticket prices on the Chester
Liverpool line and those on the Borderlands line
through Neston. There seems no good reason why using Neston station should be so
much more expensive than using stations in Ellesmere Port and Chester when travelling
to the same destination.

Neston a step closer to being Fairtrade town

Progress is being made on achieving Fairtrade Town status for Neston. A Steering Group has
been set up as the second of five goals to gain the status.
The first goal achieved was for the Town Council to commit to buying only Fairtrade items
for refreshments for Neston Town Council meetings and events where these are available.
Fairtrade is about bringing the farmer and the shopper closer together and putting people at
the heart of trade.
Becoming a Fairtrade Town sends a powerful message about how a community wants trade
to work and directly benefits some of the worlds poorest farmers and workers through
increasing awareness and sales of Fairtrade.
Members of the Steering Group represent the

Local driving instructor Kevin Birchall did
his bit for Children in Need by taking part
in the Big Learner Relay.
This nationwide event raised over 91,000 with teams of driving instructors and
their pupils travelling around Great Britain collecting for the charity. On top off
the leading car was a Big Learner Relay roof box, which was passed onto the next
instructor at the end of their 10 mile leg. Kevin was the leading car in the leg along the
A55 in North Wales.
He also carried out all his lessons for two weeks dressed as Pudsey around the
Neston area and raised cash by encouraging people to sponsor a spot on his car.

Justin Madders, the Labour MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, and Shadow Health Minister, gives
his thoughts on constituency changes and housing problems in this area.

Baffling plan to change

EP&N constituency

he issue of Parliamentary boundaries has come up again with the news that the
Government intend to push ahead with another boundary review over the next few
years. The intention is to reduce the number of MPs by 50 and to equalise the number
of electors in each constituency so that each is roughly the same size. Most constituencies
are roughly the same size at the moment but a degree of latitude and common sense
was applied so that natural boundaries were respected and communities kept together.
The current proposals are so prescriptive there is a risk that we end up with the ridiculous
Mersey Banks constituency again which split Ellesmere Port in half and contained a part of
the constituency in Widnes that you had to cross the river Mersey to get to. Neston was put
in with bits of the Wirral and the other half of Ellesmere Port was put in with Chester. If there
are changes then they wont come into force until the next General Election.
l I have been concerned by the Governments Housing and Planning Bill which will make it
easier for developers to get planning permissions without any local consultation, allowing
legitimate concerns about the impact on local infrastructure to be ignored. It will also
enable starter homes to be sold at a 20% discount for first time buyers under the age of
40 which recognises the enormous difficulty many young people have in getting on the
housing ladder. However, the flaw in the Governments plan is that this discount will be
available in homes up to a value of 250,000 which is well in excess of the average house
price in the constituency and so still unaffordable for many. These discounts will effectively
be paid for by removing the obligation on developers to build affordable housing, which
has mainly been for rent, recognising that not everyone is able to afford to buy a home of
their own. The other most significant aspect of the Bill is the introduction of the right to buy
for housing association tenants. Again this sounds like a good idea in theory but in practice
is going to be paid for by a levy on councils and has no guarantee that homes sold will be
replaced. My fear is that what we will see is a reduction in supply of homes that people can
afford to live in.
l As we approach Christmas it is a time to reflect on the past year and spare a thought for
those less fortunate than ourselves. I have met so many brilliant people in this constituency
over the last 12 months who give their time, their expertise and their support in a whole
series of ways that make life that little bit easier for many. So I say thank you to all those
carers,public servants, armed forces personnel & veterans, faith groups, charities and all
those volunteers who contribute to our society. Enjoy Christmas.
