Problem Set in Math 103 Plane and Solid Mensuration

Directions: Do the following problems as directed. Make an illustration for every problem. Show all
necessary parts of your solution. Write your solutions NEATLY on a short bond paper (write the question
first, then corresponding solution, maximum of three (3) problems per page). Box your final answer.
Submit this activity on or before 12 nn of Sept. 12, 2015 at the Mathematics and Statistics Department,
COS 100D.
Note: Can be accomplished in group of four (4) maximum members only.
1. A vegetable bin built in the form of a cube with an edge of 6 ft is divided by a vertical partition which
passes through two diagonally opposite edges. Find the lateral surface of each compartment.
2. Pass a plane through a cube so that the section formed will be a regular hexagon. If the edge of the
cube is 2 units, find the area of this section.
3. Points B, L, U, I, O and D are each midpoint of an edge as shown in the figure below. Find the area of
each of the sections OILU, BLU, CAD.

4. A solid concrete porch consists of 3 steps and a landing. The step has a tread of 11 inches and a rise of
7 inches and a length of 7 feet; the landing is 6 feet by 7 feet. How much material was used in its
construction?

5. Find the height of a prism with a base in the form of a sector with central angle of 250. Its volume is
found to be 350 cubic units and the height is four times the radius of the base.
6. The trough shown in the figure has a triangular ends which lie in parallel planes. The top of the trough
is a horizontal rectangle 20 in by 33 in and the depth of the trough is 16 in. (1 gal = 231 in3)
(a) How many gallons of water will it hold? How many gallons does it contain when the depth of the water
is 10 in?
(b) What is the depth of the water when the trough contains 3 gallons?
(c) Find the wetted surface when the depth of the water is 9 in.

7. What is the area of the base of a regular square pyramid whose lateral faces are equilateral triangles
and whose altitude is 9 inches?
8. The roof of a certain residential house is composed of five equal isosceles triangles whose vertices meet
in the center of the roof. What is the area of the roof if its height is 3m and the edges all inclined at an
angle of 600 with the vertical?
9. A closed cylindrical tank is 8 feet long and 3 feet in diameter. When lying in horizontal position, the
water is 2 feet deep. If the tank is in vertical position, what is the depth of the water in the tank?
10. A cylindrical tin can holding 2 gallons has its height equal to the diameter of its base. Another
cylindrical tin can with the same capacity has its height equal to twice the diameter of its base. Find the
ratio of the amount of tin required for making the two cans with covers.
