like Jesus has. Jesus has given me

my calling, my spouse, my purpose,
my life. Jesus breaking into my life
has given me a people that I
cherish that being, you.

The Advent of Jesus

The advent of the new season of
Game of Thrones. The advent of
the new, turbo-charged BMW.
The advent of Jesus. All the
same word, meaning the same
thing: the appearance of a
notable person, thing or event.
But what a difference the subject
of a sentence can make (okay,
some of us really LIKE grammar!)
Game of Thrones, BMW, or Jesus.
To which one are we most
looking forward?
Now, for those of us who have
been kicking around Sunday
School for a couple of decades,
we KNOW what the right answer
is supposed to be. Its supposed
to be Jesus. But in our hearts, is it
the true answer? This is not to
throw anybody into a guilt trip; I
myself would not be at all
disappointed if, on Christmas
Day, I were presented with a
Publishers Clearinghouse check:
the advent of Nansis retirement!
But I also know that check would
not significantly alter my life- not

How about you? How has Jesus

breaking into your life changed
you? Thats the promise were given
at least: that with the coming
(advent) of Jesus, we will no longer
have to fear death. We will no
longer have to fear loss. We will no
longer have to fear trials. Because
Jesus is right there with us, bringing
us through all of these: death, loss,
trials, and the fear of all those
things. Thats what that famous
Advent hymn is all about:
Come, O long-expected
Jesus, born to set Your people free;
From our fears and sins
release us; grant us Your true liberty.
And if we allow Jesus to break in to
our hearts in this Advent season, this
hymn can come true within our own
hearts. Which sounds better than
the Game of Thrones, a BMW, or
even a Publishers Clearinghouse
check.
In Christs love,
Pastor Hawkins

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

DON BOYCHUK & ROBERT ZONDAG. Don and Robert first
came to Emmanuel shortly after the
Supreme Court said that gays could
marry. Would you marry us? Don
asked Pastor Hawkins. Are you
gay, she replied. Yes, said Don.

Then yes, I would be happy to marry you! And so

began Don and Roberts happy life with Emmanuel.
Robert and Don are vibrate with energy. Robert started a
financial management firm in Delafield 10 years ago; for
the past 20 years, Don has been the COO/CFO of
Planned Parenthood. Recently, he quit to start his own
business, which keeps him in the air about one week a
month. Don loves putting up the fruits of their orchards
and garden. He also enjoys collecting 18 th century silver
tea sets. In November, hes going to a cooking school for
an intensive study of French pastry. He has promised to
come back to us bearing freshly baked croissants and
brioche. Robert is an artist; brilliant colors burst from his
acrylics and watercolors. And recently, he has taken up
printmaking. Robert likes to grow the food that Don
cooks; he loves to garden. When you come to their
home, you will be ENTHUSIASTICALLY greeted by an
immense Anatolian Shepherd named Cooper, 2 very
spoiled cats Mia and Nia Ling, and a painfully shy Collie
named Pretty Lady. And when you come, please bring a
couple of bushels to bring home apples

STEVE, PENNIE, KAITLYNN & LAUREN EVERETT (shown with
Oscar the parrot). 1 parrot, 1
dog, 1 cat, 2 fish and 5 chickens
are the proper companions for
the
Everetts.
This
animal
adoration comes naturally to
Kaitlynn and Lauren, because
their mom LOVES animals.
Pennie
was
a
veterinary
technician until she had her girls, and cant imagine her
life without all her humans and animals. Steve pretty
much just likes whatever his girls like. So what do his girls
like? Lauren is in 4K, and likes Hello Kitty, purple and very
colorful art- and shes an extraordinarily wonderful
storyteller! Every night she tells her parents stories before
she goes to bed. Kaitlynn is an artist, and can draw
excellent pictures of their 5 chickens. She is looking
forward to when they will start laying eggs, because the
eggs will come in many different colors. Kaitlynn has also
memorized her childrens Bible- an admirable feat!
Kaitlynn is in first grade at Wales Elementary. Penny likes
to be outside- gardening, cutting down trees, chasing the
chickens, chasing the dog, chasing the kids. If ever she
would stop chasing around, she thinks that she would like
to read. Steve doesnt get to chase the chickens as
much, because he travels a LOT, both nationally and
internationally, in his job as the General Manager of
Hacpo which makes commercial kitchen equipment.

Adult Fellowship News....

Adult Fellowship annual Christmas party!!
Tuesday, December 8th well meet at
noon in fellowship hall for a potluck
dinner!
For 113 years, the Christmas Fund for the Veterans of the
Cross and the Emergency Fund has been a leading light
in the UCC mission. The Christmas Fund is one of the four
Special Mission Offerings of the United Church of Christ
and provides the UCC with a means to directly assist
those who have so faithfully and selflessly served and now
find themselves facing unexpected financial needs.
One of the unique aspects of the Christmas Fund is that
the funds provide direct financial assistance to individual
UCC clergy and lay church employees the funds do not
support programs or institutions, but people.
Through the generosity of so many UCC congregations
and individuals across the country, a total of $1,538,531
was received in last years Offering.
HOW THE FUNDS ARE USED:
MONTHLY PENSION SUPPLEMENTATION for 325 lowerincome retired UCC clergy and lay employees.
QUARTERLY HEALTH PREMIUM SUPPLEMENTATION for 209
lower-income retired UCC clergy and lay employees.
CHRISTMAS THANK YOU GIFT CHECKS given to 510
retired UCC clergy and lay church employees.
EMERGENCY GRANTS for 50 active/retired UCC clergy
and lay employees.
With your continued generosity, more individuals will
receive the support of the church in their time of need.
The special offering for the Christmas Fund will be taken
on Sunday, December 20th. You will find the offering
envelopes in the fellowship pads.

The Board of Stewards thanks you for your continued

support.

Meet our new Nursery Attendant!

Our former attendant, Hannah Hinrichs,
resigned the position as of October 4.
Thanks Hannah for your service!
Cassidy Spencer is our new Nursery
Attendant beginning November 1st.
Welcome aboard, Cassidy! (Stop into
the Nursery and say hi to Cassidy!)
My name is Cassidy Spencer and I love art! I have two
dogs named Annie and Perri who I love very much, I do
school online from home and I love to draw portraits and
paint landscapes!

Thursday, December 17
6:00 PM
in the church sanctuary
Come and enjoy the Emmanuel Choir performing the
sounds of Christmas! There is no charge to attend....open
to the public...bring your friends. Our special guests will be
residents of the local Prader-Willi community....come and
help welcome them!

In the event of a bad snow and/or ice

storm this winter, if we feel it would be best
to
cancel
any
services
or
meetings/activities, that information will be
posted on the Emmanuel UCC Facebook
page as well as broadcasted on Milwaukee TV channels
4 & 6 (and their websites under CLOSINGS). The intent is to
keep everyone safe, so if in doubt, please check before
venturing out.
Each year we decorate the
Sanctuary for Christmas Eve
with poinsettias. The scope of
our display depends on you!
We ask you to purchase a
poinsettia and bring it in to
church on December 20th so that we can place them in
the Sanctuary for the December 24 th service. If you would
like to dedicate your plant to the memory of a loved one,
you may fill out a tag for your plant with that information.

MISSION & OUTREACH

Singing Bowl

Our donations to the Singing Bowl will

continue to go to Repairers of the Breach
through January 2016.
Emmanuelites really shine in December with our two
Christmas tree projects!

ANGEL TREE PROJECT:

Located in the gathering area, the angel tree will be

hung with decorated cards and envelopes. Our church
will lend a hand to two families in our community that
need our help during these trying economic times. Listed
on the card will be a suggestion for a requested toy or
needed clothes. Pluck a card off the tree and come
back with the gift-wrapped item and the card firmly
affixed to the outside. The envelopes have suggestions for
SCRIP cards for groceries, gas or department stores.
Laurie Buckett will help you with SCRIP which you can
order on Dec. 6 and receive on the 13th.
Shirlene Hazelberg contacts the Christmas Clearing
House in Waukesha and receives the names of these
unfortunate families. However, we keep their identities
private out of respect. Contact Shirlene if you have any
questions.

AND UNDER THE ANGEL TREE:

We have a soft spot in our hearts for our homeless

veterans. So, 25 plastic-coated shopping bags will be
waiting UNDER the Angel Tree for you to fill. Don't worry,
a list will be attached to each bag for generic items such
as thick warm socks, toiletries (no alcohol containing
products), hard candy, laundry soap pods, hair brushes,
combs, and disposable razors. Female veterans may also
be homeless, so please consider taking a designated
bag for them.
These gifts should be brought to church no later than
December 13th.
And last, something warm and fuzzy!

THE SANCTUARY TREE

This tree will be decorated with mittens, scarves, etc.

which will be donated to those in need. You may begin
bringing these items to decorate the tree during Hanging
of the Greens on November 29th.

Late-breaking news...

The Executive Director of Family Promise of Western

Waukesha County, Mariah Dewberry, has resigned
effective December 1, 2015. Mariah has been with
Family Promise for over two years and has directed it to a
recognizable service for homeless families in our area.
Mariha's message, in part, to us is this:
I have had a once in a lifetime opportunity to define and
refine my leadership skills. I would like to commend the
entire Family Promise community for their selfless
engagement and commitment to making Family Promise
a strong and thriving organization, and supporting me
along the way.
You all have shown me the true spirit of giving and of
LOVE that I will forever cherish. As I make my transition, I
will hold Family Promise up in high regard since the
organization as a whole has had many positive impacts
on my life. I will continue to pray for the success of the
program; both for the families we serve and the
community.

Thank you Emmanuelites.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
SUNDAY SCHOOL
This past lesson was on Jesus as a Young Boy in the
Temple. We learned about how he stayed in Jerusalem
after Passover and his parents didn't notice he was gone
for a whole day! When they found him 3 days later he
was in the temple listening to the teachers and asking
questions. We learned about this time of Jesus this
through games, carpentry and making and trying
unleavened bread. Ask your children how they liked the
bread and how it compared to the more traditional
bread. We will be moving into our Advent lesson and
learning some carols to sing with the choir on December
20.
REMEMBER: Please bring in your child's registration form
for Sunday School if you haven't done so already. Also,
please fill out the permission form so that we can use your
child's picture or video with them in it in the newsletter, on
our Facebook page, or other public place. You can
drop off these forms with a teacher or place in the
Christian Ed mailbox. There are extra forms in the blue
room and in the file folder in the Christian Ed mailbox.
And don't forget to bring in some extra money if you can
for our offering.
Thank you!
The Christian Ed Team.
Early in November, the Sunday School kids compared the
story of Jesus being lost in the temple and his parents
searching for him to how we are searching for Jesus in our
own lives and how in your search we find different
choices. Which path are we going to take? The kids
partnered up and used Legos to build a maze of life. The
kids made bad choice paths that led to guns and
violence and at the end of the maze was church, Sunday
school, and God. The kids surprised their teacher, Peggy
Hazelberg with the mazes. She couldn't believe how well
they compared the lesson to their lives. Heres some
pictures of the exercise Peggy sent us...

YOUTH GROUP
Reminder- Youth Group for kids in 4th-12th grades meets
each Wednesday (unless otherwise noted) in fellowship
hall from 6-7:30 PM.

CONFIRMATION
DEC. 13, 12-2:30pm- ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION: The Bible
Looking Ahead: Jan. 16-17, Confirmation retreat in
Milwaukee. Catch a glimpse of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
Kings dream of a just society by learning about some of
the injustices of our day and engaging in learning and
service opportunities in our local community. ($40 per
youth).
This is a picture of our AMAZING AND WONERFUL
CONFIRMANDS taken during their Chicago mission trip
(Nov. 6-8). Our youths met different people and learned
many things, meeting new friends along the way. All of
them jumped into action at each place we visited and
volunteered at with an open mind and open heart; doing

what needed to be done and taking steps out of their

comfort zone. They made us proud this weekend. The
pictures below are from packing bags of food for
distribution at the food cupboard and serving dinner to
the homeless. WE LOVE OUR CONFIRMANDS!!!

ADULTS
Jesus is called the Son of God but so was Caesar.
Before Jesus ever started His ministry, the Roman
Emperors were called The Savior of the World, The Son
of God, and The Prince of Peace, but their idea of
how peace would be achieved was by conquering the
world. When Jesus comes on the scene, these imperial
titles are taken over by Him. Why? What does it mean
when the titles of the Roman Imperial Theology are taken
from Caesar and given to Jesus? Come to this
fascinating study! No Bible background necessary. Adult
Bible Study meets every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30am in
the Community Room.

Blessings at the Years End -Howard Thurman

I remember with gratitude the fruits of the labors of others, which
I have shared as a part of the normal experience of daily living.

Snow Removal- the church

contracts to have the
driveway and parking lot
plowed
and
salted;
however, the sidewalks and
emergency exits are kept
clear by volunteers each
year. Ron Blaschuk is forming a team to do this task on a
rotating basis. Please contact him to volunteer: 262-9655509 or fran-ron@netwurx.net. The church has a snow
blower and well train you if you do not know how to run
it!
Greeters! Can you be at church by 9 AM on any given
Sunday? Can you smile and greet people as they arrive
for worship? Then youre the perfect candidate to be a
Sunday Greeter! Please sign up.
Church Cleaners! We need at least 4 people each month
to clean the church- please sign up...the 2016 list is up so
we need LOTS of people!
Dousman Meals Drivers- the winter months bring a
challenge to us since some of our regular Meals drivers
go away for extended periods of time. If youve
contemplated volunteering for this ministry, now would
be a very welcome time! Please speak to Donna
Newland for more information. Emmanuel drivers deliver
meals every four weeks to the Dousman, Delafield,
Ottawa and Summit areas.

I remember the beautiful things that I have seen, heard, and feltsome, as a result of definite seeking on my part, and many that
came unheralded into my path, warming my heart and rejoicing
my spirit.
I remember the moments of distress that proved to be
groundless and those that taught me profoundly about the
evilness of evil and the goodness of good.

I remember the new people I have met, from whom I have

caught glimpses of the meaning of my own life and the true
character of human dignity.

I remember the dreams that haunted me during the year,

keeping me ever mindful of goals and hopes which I did not
realize but from which I drew inspiration to sustain my life and
keep steady my purposes.

I remember the awareness of the spirit of God that sought me

out in my aloneness and gave to me a sense of assurance that
undercut my despair and confirmed my life with new courage
and abiding hope.

The best way to grow our church

is to invite neighbors and friends
to come to church with you!
Afraid of bringing up the C word
in conversation? Here are some
talking points for Decembers
church life that may be of help...
We have a new Youth Group thats just getting
started in the church. Its open to kids from 4th through
12th grades and is being run by a young couple who
are members of Emmanuel. They meet on
Wednesday nights in fellowship hall from 6-7:30 and I
bet your kids might even know some of the Emmanuel
kids who attend.
Emmanuel has a great choir and twice a year they
put on a concert for people with Prader-Willi
Syndrome. December 17th at 6 pm is the Christmas
Concert. Its open to everyone and its FREE- want to
go with me?
Our Sunday School kids are going to be singing during
the 9 am service on December 20th....why dont you
come with me and watch AND there will be
refreshments served in fellowship hall afterwards!
Our Pastor always has a wonderful Christmas Eve
service. Adults and kids love it and its early enough
that you can still get to your family party
afterwards...its at 5pm!!
