Course Description: This course is designed for the student in the Fitness Specialist Certificate
Program with practical experience in the field of exercise and fitness. Emphasis is placed on
participant screening, evaluation and exercise design, self marketing, fitness specialist/client
relationships and professional responsibility in a fitness setting.
Prerequisite: (With a grade of C or better, or equivalent)
PHYE 280, PHYE 281, PHYE 283
Student Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Asses a clients health history and identify risk factors.
2. Evaluate a clients physical fitness level, interpret results and design a safe and effective
exercise plan for an individual or group.
3. Apply knowledge of basic anatomy, exercise physiology, and kinesiology to provide a client
with an exercise prescription.
4. Employ physical fitness teaching strategies to individual clients and groups.
5. Select business and marketing strategies to achieve individual goals in the fitness industry.
6. Apply the principles of exercise science to complete national and local certifications.

General information
1. Class is in session 6-7:50pm. Please plan your meal before or after class.
2. Bring textbook and paper to every class and also be prepared for physical activity with
proper attire and snacks/water. Layers are good to bring, it gets chilly sometimes.
3. If you are having problems with any aspect of this class, or issues accessing the materials
online, including students who may need academic accommodations, notify the professor
immediately.
Grading:
Pop Quizzes: Will involve demonstration of in class discussions.
Potential Assignments: Resume, Cover Letter, Health Assessment, Interviews, Independent field
trips. Self-marketing plan, Client Assessment, Exercise plan for client.
Attendance: monitored through assignments and tests:
The student must be present in class to receive all assignment details, or email the professor
ahead of time to receive information.
*5 points deducted for being handed in after 6pm or for being emailed Thursday before midnight
regardless of reason.
*10 points deducted each day late (Friday at midnight being the first day) regardless of reason.

Attendance Polices and Requirements


San Diego Community College District policy 3100 governs attendance accounting for City &
Mesa Colleges.
1. It is the students responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer attending.
2. It is the instructors discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline due to
excessive absences.
3. Students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdrawal deadline, as
stated in the class schedule, will receive an evaluative letter grade in this class.
Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to respect and obey standard of student conduct while in class and on the
campus. The student Code of Conduct, disciplinary procedure, and student due process (Policy
3100 and Procedures 3100.1 and 3100.2) can be found in the college catalog, student handbook,
and at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (Room H-500). Charges of misconduct and
disciplinary sanctions may be imposed upon students who violate these standards of conduct or
provisions of college regulations. In class you are expected to:
1. Promote a courteous learning atmosphere by exhibiting mutual respect and
consideration of the feelings, ideas and contributions of others.
2. Recognize everyones opportunity to contribute information in a relevant and
meaningful manner by not monopolizing discussions, interrupting, interjecting
irrelevant, illogical or inappropriate questions or comments.
3. Demonstrate respect for equipment, supplies and facilities.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter by completing all assignments and
being prepared for class discussions and participation. You may be dropped if
you fail to demonstrate sufficient academic progress, which will be measured by
grades of C or better on laboratory reposts and in-class practicums. Notification
of this failure may be made through grading procedures, conferences, or official
notification from the instructor.
