Yesterday Mr Rose and I travelled to Garden International School in Kuala Lumpur for the
Cambridge International Examinations Outstanding Learner Awards. There was a crowd of
nearly 500 people who had the pleasure of listening to a very inspiring speech by Dr Ben Schmidt,
Regional Director Southeast Asia, from Cambridge international Examinations. As mentioned
in last weeks newsletter, Uplands students from last academic year received four awards, with
two Top of the World Awards in Co-ordinated Sciences and Mandarin.
Congratulations to Fong Yi De, Lukas Mueller and Cheah Zhi En (Zoey).
It was also great to see a former Uplands student, Bella Cristol, receive a High Achievement
Award in English Language as part of her AS-Level, which she completed last year at Kinabalu
International School.
Congratulations to all the students who were involved in the DSS Relay Marathon last Friday,
especially the organisers of this wonderful event. It is always a pleasure to see how our students
support and show great respect towards each other. It was another example of an excellent
student-led and student-centred event, with mass participation taking place. Thank you to Mrs
Cartlidge for her efforts in supporting the DSS group.
A gentle reminder that today, the CCAs conclude for Term 1. As Mr Metcalfe outlines later in
the newsletter, there are still some catch-up CCAs running over the next two weeks. There are
also trials for the U13 FOBISIA Games taking place over the coming weeks as well. Please note
that all other students should not remain on campus and they should be picked up immediately
after timetabled classed have finished.
Have a great weekend

On Thursday, 26th November, Japanese language students (Year 8 and Year 9) participated in
the annual visit to the Penang Japanese School as part of the Cultural Exchange Programme. PJS
welcomed us, and Year 9 student, Stefan, made a short speech of thanks for the hospitality of our
hosts.
Our students also participated in four activities that the PJS students organised:
Onigiri (rice ball) making, Japanese calligraphy, Bon dance and Japanese drum. Our students
enjoyed all the activities very much.
We all had a very good time and would like to extend our thanks to the Penang Japanese School.

This week our Roar Sports teams have continued to be busy with Basketball, Netball, Football
and Touch Rugby fixtures taking place across a range of age groups. Tomorrow our U12 Boys
Footballers are in action in the inaugural Penang Sports Club Junior Invitational. Next weekend
our Swim Squads travel to KL for the ISAC Swim Meet.
PSAC U15 Basketball
Last Saturday signalled the end of the PSAC U15 Basketball seasons with their end of season
tournaments. Uplands hosted the Girls Tournament and, as they have all year, swept away the
competition with some fantastic Basketball. Huge congratulations to the Girls for going through
their whole season undefeated, winning PSAC League, PSAC Tournament and their FOBISIA
Games!!
The Boys travelled over to Dalat and continued their good recent form producing some high
quality Basketball in what was an evenly matched competition. Unfortunately they couldnt
quite match the depth of the host school as Dalat ran out champions on this occasion.
FOBSIA U13 Games
Good luck to all those taking part in the U13 FOBISIA trials over the next 2 weeks, with sessions
taking place after school.
Presidents Cup Swim Meet
Good luck to all our club swimmers who are in action this weekend over in Melaka for the
Presidents Cup Swim Meet. I am sure both Penang Swim Club and Chinese Swim Club will both
go well and I look forward to seeing you all competing for Uplands at the ISAC Swim Meet the
following weekend.

CAS at Uplands
Last Friday 20th November, the DSS (Do Something Society) held a Relay Marathon which aimed
to raise money for the charity that we are supporting called Crystal Family Home. I am proud to
say that it was a tremendous turnout and we are so grateful for everyone's support and their
enthusiasm to participate. All the runners definitely surpassed all of our expectations by running
far more laps than we anticipated in the first place. My overall feeling towards the event is that
it was the most successful event which the DSS has hosted so far, and we cannot wait to do many
more events in the future. A big shout out to everyone who supported in any way, whether it
was running or sponsoring the participants, we cannot thank you enough!
Vanessa Gehrig, Year 12
DSS Co-Leader

DSS Marathon
Dear Uplands Community,
Last Friday during the DSS Marathon, I noticed something extraordinary. I saw a young
man/student named Carl from Year 7 literally run lap after lap until he nearly dropped. He was
exhausted and covered in sweat, but he kept going. He kept going because he had a goal. He
had ideals, and he knew what he was running for and who he was running for. He had purpose,
ideals and an objective. He was running because he had respect for others, because he was caring,
because he was principled.
Carls mom, who was at the event to cheer her son on, told me that when some of his friends
declined to participate in the marathon, he decided to take it on himself to raise money for the
children in need. He contacted his community and asked them to support him in his endeavour.
As any person who shows perseverance, he reached his goals and went beyond.
Thank you, Carl for showing our community what Uplands students are capable of!
