Green Buildings - Overview

Green building is a structure created using processes that are environmentally responsible and
resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle including design, construction, operation,
maintenance, renovation and deconstruction.
Residential Buildings are 2nd largest consumer of electricity.
It has been made compulsory for every government buildings in India to have Green Building
Certification.

India already has over 1 Billion Sq ft of registered green buildings in India.

With 2380 registered green building projects in India, India is among top 5 countries in World
spreading green building movement.
Smart City and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and urban transformation (AMRUT) initiative also
encourages Green Building Development.

Efficient Air Conditioning - Overview

Air conditioning amounts for 40% of the total building energy consumption.
To be eligible for green building certification, energy efficient air conditioning is mandatory.
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has come out with star ratings for energy efficient air
conditioning.
Green techniques such as Geo-thermal air conditioning can drastically reduce the energy
requirement.

Conclusion
There is an overall positive environment for the growth of Cleantech Sector in India.
The Solar energy sector will see tremendous growth in both utility scale solar and roof-top solar.

Many start ups may not emerge in the utility scale solar due to very high capital investment, but there
are many emerging start ups in Roof Top solar, Solar Consulting, Market Place and Distributed Energy
Generation such as solar irrigation, home lighting system and micro-grid.
Wind and Small hydro would see growth in the coming years with large scale capacity addition but
many start ups may not emerge because of high capital investment

Smart Grid and Energy Storage are at very nascent stage. But in coming years a lot of activity will be
seen in these sector with new start ups coming in this space.
Waste Management will also ride a growth curve because of Smart City, AMRUT and Swatch Bharat
Mission. This sector will also see new start ups coming in the entire value chain including waste
logistics, recycling and waste-to-energy.
Energy Efficiency sector is seeing a tremendous growth with Energy Analytics emerging as the front
runner with many new startups and established companies entering the sector.
Green Buildings and Efficient Air Conditioning sector will also see growth with the coming of new
government regulations and stricter Green Building Norms.
