The document provides an overview of different types of differentials used in vehicles, including open differentials, locking differentials, and limited slip differentials. It explains that open differentials can allow one wheel to spin when traction is lost, while locking differentials fully lock both wheels together but can be noisy and difficult to engage. Limited slip differentials provide a compromise by limiting slippage between wheels using internal friction while allowing some difference in wheel speeds. The document then focuses on mechanical locking limited slip differentials, comparing their performance to competitors in the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.

Today I am going to share my study report on the differential & Mechanical locking limited slip differential. Slide:-2 Contains These are the contains of Part A & B In part A I am going to explain briefly types of differential with its working principle & limitations. Part B will be starting with a performance comparison video of vehicles having various types of differentials. Initially Ill explain Construction & working of subassemblies & after that there will be explanation of entire assembly working. Then well be spending some time for advantages, disadvantages, & discussion. Slide:-3 Differential gear box - Classification This is just classification of differential gear box & in next slides well discuss the working principles & limitations in brief. 1. First is open differential 2. Locking differential:- having sub types as selectable locking & automatic locking differential 3. Limited slip differential:- can be sub divided as torque sensitive, which are sensitive to change in system torque & Speed sensitive, which are sensitive to change in speed. Torque sensitive LSD can be subdivided as torsen LSD & Clutch type LSD.
Slide:-4 Open differential
It simply works on the principle of planetary gear train. When vehicle come across a turn inner wheel rotates at lesser rpm than that of outer wheel. Side gear a acts as sun gear, diff gear acts as planet gear, side gear c acts as annulus gear & diff case acts as a planet carrier. The basic disadvantage of the open differential is that when one wheel comes on low traction surface it starts to spin. & as enough torque is not available at high traction wheel vehicle could not move ahead. Slide:-5 locking differential Similar to the open differential it also works on the principle of planetary gear train. It is having additional feature that it can lock both side gear with each other. It helps to transfer entire driveline torque to the both wheel irrespective of road traction. Pneumatic, hydraulic, manual actuation can be possible. Limitations of locking differential are Noisy while locking Some lockers require vehicle to stop for engagement Automatic locking differentials will affect the ability of a vehicle to steer Unskilled drivers often put massive stress on driveline
Slide:-6 Limited slip differential
Similar to the open differential it also works on the
principle of planetary gear train. When any one wheel losses road traction it is suppose to slip. But in LSD slipping of wheel is limited by internally developed frictional torque. Limited slip differentials are considered a compromise between a standard differential and a locking differential Operate more smoothly Direct some extra torque to the wheel with high traction Limitations of LSD are LSD are not capable of 100% lockup. Locking capability is dependent upon bias ratio.
The study report is focused on GM make Chevrolet
Colorado, where GM claims that the mechanical locking limited slip differential performs superior than that of other competitors.
