Globalization Through Imperialism and Dependency Theory

All advancement in this 21st century is probably giving the greatest challenge that must be
faced by todays people. It is showed by how people tend to globalize many aspects in their life
such as concept of life, values, cultures, etc. This phenomenon is well-known as globalization
and it becomes as one of the most issues discussed by people all around the world.
Throughout centuries, many changes applied in the existing elements in the society
whether in positive ways or in negative ways. Many people are talking about the effect of all
advancement which is contributing in damaging the purpose of advancement itself as a tool to
increase the level of peoples comfortable life. Moreover, they argue about how globalization
takes a role in changing the real values of many original cultures through its process in unifying
and homogenizing cultures. On the other hand, some people also have different kind of thoughts
on how globalization helps todays people in connecting to another people all around the world.
Therefore, this issue always appears in debatable desk to be discussed by many people.
Talking about globalization impacts are never get any ending. Some approaches in
defining globalization such as imperialism theory and dependent theory show how globalization
puts a great effect toward cultures. Through imperialism theory, globalization shows its impacts
in sinking some least known cultures by empowering another culture. It is proven by the
decrease in the number of original cultures that exist in the world. Somehow, the society has no
abilities to defend their own cultures due to this natural process. People in the society only can
accept the changes although the values of new cultures sometimes against the values in their
societys beliefs. On dependency theory, it explains how the globalization drives the changes in
communitys life through a degree of dependency toward development. It cannot be denied that
todays generation has a huge reliance on advancements. For example, a high-speed of
development of technology transfers a big impact to people. It is shown by how people are
addicted to new technology such as hand phone, smartphone, computer, internet, etc. These two
theories express how a globalization affects current generation lives.
Globalization as a natural phenomenon which flows in line with the development of the
world needs a good management by people. Although the changes cannot be denied and rejected,
but at least people still can maintain some parts that need to be maintained. Hence,

the

movement of globalization and development also should be in line with the level of peoples
intelligence in managing all effects from globalization.
