Common Core Standards:

K.CC.B.5

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect c

cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, p
object with one and only one number name and each number name wit
only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects
The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or t
which they were counted.
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that
larger.
Count to answer how many? questions about as many as 20 things ar
a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scat
configuration; given a number from 120, count out that many objects.

Lesson Summary:
The purpose of this lesson is to help students use their number knowledge and combine it with counting
objects. Students will count and identify how many of a specific item is at each station. Each child will use
Osmo as technology to benefit their learning. At the end of this lesson students should be able to count and
distinguish numbers 1-30.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson will take about 2 hours 10 minutes. I will separate into two 40 minute lessons and one 50 minute,
over 3 days.

Commentary:
In this lesson, I plan on walking around the room from group to group checking on the progress of my
students. The most challenging part of teaching this lesson will be making sure all students stay focused and on

task. Students will be in groups for the most part of this lesson I will make is harder for me to make sure all
students are attributing to finding the answers. I plan on having a match up game that gets the kids moving
around and excited. The more fun they are having the more interested they will become.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
In the First 5 minutes: I will explain that we will be focusing this lesson on counting and have the students
count with me 1-30.
15 Minutes: Students will be grouped up in 3 groups of 10. Each student will grab either a dice paper or
number paper assigned to their group. Students will match their dice(number) with the corresponding
number(dice). Next the students will separate their group between dice and numbers and will rearrange each of
them in number order.
15 Minutes: Read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom 123 as a class.
Day 2:
10 Minutes: I will show them an example of how this activity will work. I will have pre-selected groups of 6
and have them meet in their designated areas.
15-20 Minutes: Each group will get a chance to either count block, pennies, and Legos and write the answer on
their paper or to count out the number written on the desk and drawn examples on their paper of what the
station number looks like using the items.
10 Minutes: Students will return to their seats. We will review activity answers as a whole.

Day 3:
10 Minutes: Show how to use the Osmo on the IPad and explain how to carefully use this tool.
15 Minutes: Half of the students will use the Osmo-Numbers game to practice their counting numbers.
5 Minutes: Students may choose between three other osmo games to play with
20 Minutes: Students will switch stations. The first half of the students (who were using the Osmo) will move
to answer their counting packet. Vise Verse. While the students are filling out their packets I will be going
around to help students who might still need some one-on-one time.

Pre-Assessment:
For this assessment, before we start the lesson I will have each student take a test to see how much they know
about this topic. Students will have five minutes to complete a short quiz to show how much they know before

we start the lesson.

Scoring Guidelines:
This quiz will be non-scored. I will review each students answers and write down my observation for
future use during the lesson. This will help me remember which students would need more guidance.

Post-Assessment:
I will give each student the same test as I did for the pre-assessment. This test will take place after we grade
their homework together.
Scoring Guidelines:
This Post-Assessments test will be scored for a grade. Students grades will be determined with the
amount of correct answers for the numbers test.

Differentiated Instructional SupportThroughout this lesson there are different types of activities. Students who like hands on activities will like
using the block to show how many a number will count for. Other students who are in to video games will love
using the Osmo. Other students may have a easier time with the packet material.
Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students:
During this activity if a students group may become done faster I will have a set of numbers they can try to
give them more of a challenge. (Using bigger numbers on the cards)
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:
When they kids who might be struggling are working on the packets I can use the block and pennies to help
show out the problems one-on-one.

These two websites will be useful for students to practice their knowledge of counting while out of school.
PBS has many different games that will keep the students interested in continuing to learn about this lesson.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I would send my students home with homework. This would consist of a family walk/drive of five minute
around the neighbor hood and have them use their knowledge of counting. They would count and record: how
many house on their street, how many have trashcans out front, and how many have screen doors.

Interdisciplinary Connections
In this math lesson I am integrating language arts. At the end of each day I will have to kids explain to me
what was easy or hard during this activity. Also using the Osmo device with the IPad is helping students with
learning with technology.
