MODULE IV: FORMATION

ACTIVITY 1: Bahay, Baboy, Bagyo

I.

Learning Objectives
1. Cognitive: To explain and enrich individuals knowledge regarding on how
people join groups, affiliate with others, and how attraction transforms
acquaintances into friends.
2. Affective: To establish harmony between individuals who will eventually
create a group, be given a sense of belongingness and experience
satisfaction, and let these individuals feel that they are socially accepted
and supported.
3. Psychomotor: Students will be able to demonstrate physical skills such as
running, chasing and tagging and will be able to establish cooperation and
coordination.

Development
A. Instruction

This game is played by a large group of people. First, the facilitator will ask the
participants to group themselves into threes. Each group of three people will have a
particular formation:

Bahay- Persons A and B form the Bahay by facing each other, raising their
arms diagonally, with hands meeting each other.
Baboy- Person C is crouched down and is the "Baboy".

When groups of three are already formed, the facilitator will chant: "Bahay,
baboy, bagyo, bahay, baboy, bagyo... _____" If the facilitator ends with:

Bahay- all people who form the "bahay" (the A's and the B's) will move around
and find a "Baboy" to house over. All "Baboy" must stay put. The A's and the B's
need not necessarily be partners after the shift.
Baboy- all the "Bahays" will stay put while the "Baboys" must move around and
find another house.
Bagyo- this means total chaos. Regrouping occurs. People who were previously
"Baboys" can become "Bahay" and vice versa.
And heres the twist of the game. The facilitator will now change the chant.
Except from the chant Bagyo, the facilitator will now indicate a specific
number of Bahay and Baboy that must be formed. For example, the
facilitator will chant "Bahay, baboy, bagyo, bahay, baboy, bagyo... LIMANG
Bahay", this means that the participants must form a group of five Bahay

and one Baboy in it. Whereas, if the facilitator chants "Bahay, baboy,
bagyo, bahay, baboy, bagyo... LIMANG Baboy", this means that five
Baboy must be inside the normal Bahay. The facilitator decides what
chant she will instruct while each participants goal here is to ensure that
he/she will form a group or be in a group or else the participant will be
eliminated from the game. The participant/s that doesn't belong to any
group will be eliminated from the game. Until participants are down by a
group of three and they will be declared as the winners of the game.
IV.

Processing Question
1. As the game started, which group did you choose to join?
2. What were your means and strategies in choosing your group members?
3. As the game continued, what are your strategies to stay in the game?
4. Did you feel that you are able to pick your group members based on your
strategies? Or that strategy does not fit or work in anyway?
5. Did you find it difficult to form groups, because perhaps you feel that you
do not belong in the first place?

V.

Abstraction
This activity explicates how people join together in other groups. In the
beginning of the game, all or most of the participants will tend to group
themselves from Within, or with the ones who they share the same personal
qualities and interests or what we call their friends or their group of friends.
But as the game continues and some participants are eliminated, participants
would tend to group with any other participant they can see regardless of their
closeness, regardless of anything. In this kind of situation, participants tend to
form groups from Without, or the situation itself. Participants need support
and companionship in order to survive the game. From this game, we can see
the different tendencies of a person on how they join or form groups either
from Within or from Without.

VI.

Application
Forming groups are rooted from various kinds of considerations, depending
on the person who is searching for a group as well as the group who will
accept or reject certain person subject to their conditions of being a
member. In this case, the person who is searching is much more involved,
since he or she is the one being evaluated or criticized before becoming an
exclusive and recognized partner or colleague. Although dyads would be an
exemption to this as both of these individuals initially searched for each
other, sooner or later they will be able to find larger groups which they can
join into, or it could be on the other way round; someone could join their pair
and eventually develop a larger group.

MODULE IV: FORMATION

Also, the setting or the environment dictates which of the formation principles
are to be considered. Certain circumstances in life determine the appropriate
principle, since people are living with different roles and sometimes being
given conditions that actually prohibit the persons desired means of choosing
groups. Lets say for example you are in a work setting, it is more likely for
you to choose a group member who is near (someone who is in the same unit
or department), rather than looking for someone who is with the same
preferences or personality as yours (someone who you can talk about your
irrelevant stories outside work), because you are required to be professional
and not expected to act as if you are students seeking for alliances.
When people form groups, regardless of their ways to do so, it is important to
take into account the values encompassed in establishing strong and good
relationships. Groups sometimes consist of members who are actually and
literally different from each other (e.g. in terms of nationality, beliefs, political
views, etc.), but it just take respect and acceptance from one another to be
able to have a lasting attachment that is firm and resilient.
