REPORT ON TASAWWUR ISLAM IN THE INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN

ERA: CHALLENGES AND WAY FORWARD TALK.

BY: Nur Amirani binti Ahmad (ME097942), Section 04.

On 2nd November 2015, students of ICSB112 were invited to attend a talk in DK1, COIT.
The title of the talk is Tasawwur Islam In The International Era: Challenges and Way Forward
which delivered by Dr. Hany El Banna, The Co-Founder of Islamic Relief International. Born in
Egypt, Dr Hany El-Banna completed his MBBCh Medicine at Al Azhar University, Cairo, where
he also obtained a Diploma in Islamic Studies in 1976. He was awarded the Hamilton Bailey
Prize in Medicine at City hospital in 1981, Birmingham UK. He then went on to further his
medical training and completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in fetal pathology from
the University of Birmingham Medical School in 1991.
The talk was begin with the core subject humanity elaborated by Dr. Hany El Banna.
As stated by him , humanity can be defined as quality of being human; the peculiar nature of
man, by which he is distinguished from other beings. One does not possessed humanity simply
because he is being a human as it comes from the inner self. As we all know, each individual
have their own thoughts and personalities that differ from one another. It means ones will care
for and helps others whenever and wherever possible; forgetting the selfish interests at times
when others need help.
Another critical point in the talk was about unity. Unity is inclusive. It frees us from the
divisiveness of prejudice as we see our commonality without devaluing our differences. A sense
of unity can transcend our fear of each other. In unity, the joy of one is the joy of all, and the hurt
of one is the hurt of all; the honor of one is the honor of all. In simplest way, unity is when we
can apply the formula of One for all, all for one. In this talk, Dr. Hany El Banna use the
example of thread. He implied that if there is only a thread, it will only can be seen as a thread.
But if we combined one or more threads from different types, colors and lengths, it will
eventually form a very beautiful piece of cloth.

Dr. Hany El Banna also stressed the important of education in cultivating the humanity in
each individual. Started from home, nurturing a kid in a good environment is very important and
critical to generate a better future generation. Instead of putting all the responsibility on the
parents shoulders, schools, community and even government need to play their roles in this
matter. And only with that, the next generation will have better sight in humanity.
The talk was ended with Q&A session. A few UNITENs students and staffs took part in
this session. Most of the equation were related to current issues such as on how technology can
change the humanity by spreading good vibes and how to deal with islamophobia. Quoting from
Dr. Hany El Banna, as a human especially a muslim, we must never look at other people and
judging them based on their skin color, religion and their practice. And never call them bad
people as they are still not exposed to muslim institution itself.
The talk was then ended by changing souvenir from UNITEN and Islamic Relief
Malaysia. Students were allowed to leave the hall.

Petrol fuel substitution

SUMMARY 1: ENERGY USE, COST AND CO2 EMISSIONS OF ELECTRIC CARS

Electric vehicles is an alternative to counter the consumption of diesel and petrol. The
researchs purpose is to determine whether larger scale use of electric vehicles is or can become
feasible by examine the efficiency, costs and greenhouse gas emissions of current and future
electric vehicles. Earlier studies addressed issues on electric vehicles efficiency by using current
technology and the uncertainty in various chain aspects separately. They also partially addressed
how increased electricity demand could be catered for.

SUMMARY 2: THE NEW CAR MARKET FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND THE
POTENTIAL FOR FUEL SUBSTITUTION
Electric vehicles are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from road transport.
However, important issues remain such as high cost, low resale value, limited choice of models
and range of pure battery-electric vehicles, uncertainty about charging possibility and speed. The
aim of the research is to analyze possible market development until year 2030 on two types of
electric vehicles: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles.
