In this write up you will learn how to use Logic.

Logic is a recording software

which lets you make and record music into a music producing software

Logic

Click on Empty Project you will have the option on what type of instrument you
want, this is so that the first recording instrument can be ready to use
Software instrument & MIDI= this lets you chose from the wide range of
instruments which are already on the software.
Audio= The Audio, the Microphone lets you
record using a microphone or a Line input,
Drummer= When clicking on drummer, it
automatically adds a simple drum beat to the
new track.
Guitar and Bass= This creates a track where
you can plug-in a guitar or bass guitar.

To get the instrument to make a different sound,

you can change the track so it sounds like a
different instrument overall, click on the track so
Logic knows what track you are wanting to
change, the top row of buttons there is one
specific button that brings up all the possible
instruments on the Logic software, this button
brings up every instrument on the software, click
on the instrument you want and the Track will
automatically change instrument.
At the top of Logic there is the transport Bar, this is where you can record, play,
stop, Metronome, loop. The transport bar also has a bit where it can tell you the
BPM, the tempo, how long the track recording has been playing for, the
signature, the key you are also playing in etc

Piano roll

On each software instrument, there is a piano roll, the piano roll lets you see
whatever you have recorded in a simple way, it lets you see what note you have
played, how long you have played it for and the velocity of that note. On the
piano roll you can edit the piece you have just recorded by using the tool box, in
the tool box there are multiple tools you can use to edit your recording, for
example there is the

Pointer tool-You can select, move, copy or resize

the notes you want to change.
Pencil tool-This lets you draw in a new note and
edit the length of the note.
Eraser tool-This allows you to delete notes.
Finger Tool-This lets you edit the length of notes.
Scissor tool-You can split the notes.
Glue tool-You can join notes my selecting the
notes and clicking them.
Mute tool-This mutes notes.
Quantize tool-This changes the timing of the
note(s) so it can be in time.
Velocity tool- lets you edit the velocity of notes on
the piano roll.
Zoom tool- this lets you zoom into the highlighted
note.
Automation Select tool- lets you select
automation data and create nodes at region
borders.
Brush tool- this is used to add notes based on the
time and pitch settings in the piano roll.

On the piano roll there is a Quantize button, this makes sure that every note in
the piano roll is in time with the BPM, if you dont want to use the quantize tool,
you can just quantize the whole bar so the software automatically changes all the
notes so they are in time. There is also the velocity slider, the velocity of the
notes is how hard the notes are played, the velocity slider lets you change how
hard the note is played, the velocity slider is the same as the velocity tool.

The Mixer

The mixer shows the channel strips for each track, you can add and edit plug-ins,
and customize routing options. On the mixer, you can pan the track by using the
pan wheel, you can also use the Buses and they let you send different signals to
different outputs and different people. On each track, there is an Audio effect
slot, this lets you add effects to tracks such as EQ (Equalization), Distortion,
Delay, Modulation etc,

On the mixer there is an EQ

Display, this lets you change the
EQ of the specific track. Above the
EQ display, above the EQ Display
there is the Gain reduction, this
brings up the Compressor, the
compressor can let you add effects
on the track such as Distortion,
you can also edit the attack and
release on the track. You can
change the output gain. This
allows you to set the overall level
for the compressor output.

Logic Pro X / Logic express 9

Logic Pro X

Logic Express 9

I made a radio advert by using Logic Express 9. Logic express 9 is not as

advanced as Logic Pro X, for example, when making the background music for
the radio advert, Logic Express 9 gave us limitations to the amount of software
instruments we could use, also most of the software instruments on Express 9
were quite bad and hard to work with, they either didnt sound right with the other
instruments in the recording, or the sound the instrument gave off sounded quite
bad overall. On Logic Pro X there is a wider range of software instruments and
you can edit the sound of the instruments so they can play well together with
different instruments. One of the main troubles I had when using Logic express 9
was that I had no experience with using Logic express 9, this meant that I had no
idea how to edit my tracks, this meant that I had to rely on my partners to help
me and teach me on how to use express 9.
I made a remake of an 80s song, I chose to remake Tainted Love. I done this
on Logic Pro X, I have more experience with Logic Pro X so I knew how to record
and edit more and easier then express 9, one of the only problems with this song
was that I was trying to find the chord pattern so that I can play it into Logic by
using the MIDI keyboard. The Chord pattern was hard to find so I had to
improvise and try and find the chords by myself, once recorded, I had the trouble
of having to quantize everything and pick the correct instruments so that

everything would play well together and sound similar to the original version. If I
had to do the remake on Logic express 9 then I would have had some limitations
to the remaking as I dont know where to find everything on Express 9, this would
mean I could not edit the track recordings as well as I did, also like I mentioned,
most of the software instruments on Express 9 were quite bad and a lot of the
software instruments didnt sound good together, such as the Electric guitars,
there is a very small range of guitars which meant that I did not have a lot of
instruments to work with, however with Logic Pro X I was able to also pick from
the wide range of synthesizers which Pro X was able to let me use.
I would recommend using Logic Pro X rather than Logic Express 9 as Logic Pro
X is more up to date and you can it can offer you so much more than what
Express 9 can offer. The main problem I have with Express 9 than Pro X is that
with Express 9 it is much harder to find everything such as the effects, EQ etc,
however with Logic Pro X you can find everything easily and there is a help
button that tells you what everything is when you hover over the part of Logic, so
you dont have to guess what you are clicking on. If you are going to get Logic I
would say get Pro X instead of express 9.

What is MIDI
MIDI stands for Musical, instrument, digital, interface, MIDI allows electronic
instruments and other digital musical tools to communicate with each other, MIDI
has no sound to it, MIDI sends messages to the software, such as Note-on, or
Note-off and many different messages. These messages are sent by a MIDI
instrument, the instrument can be anything electronic, from a MIDI keyboard or a
synthesizer. The MIDI instrument can be used on software such as Garageband,
Logic, Fruity Loops and much more recording software.
The good thing about using a MIDI instrument instead of a live instrument is that
you can change the instrument of the MIDI instrument on the software you are
using, you can also edit the MIDI recordings easy, for example, you can easily
change the pitch, length, etc
When you press a note on the MIDI instrument, it sends a message to the
software, a message saying note on which is telling the software that you are
starting to play a note, then when you stop playing that note, a new message is
sent, saying note off which is telling the software that you have stopped playing.

Conclusion
Overall I think that Logic Pro X is helpful, easy to use and very productive. When
I first started using logic Pro X I thought that it was not very advanced and very
basic, after getting to understand how to use logic more, I realised how helpful
logic can be when you want to make a song, radio advert or movie
