water are heated in the shell from 180 to 300. Hot exhaust gases having roughly the
same physical properties as air enter the tubes at 650 and leave at 350. The total
surface, based on the outer tube surface, is 10000. Determine (a) the long-mean
temperature if the heat exchanger were a simple counterflow type, (b) the
correction factor F for the actual arrangement, (c) the effectiveness of the heat
exchanger, (d) the over-all heat-transfer coefficient.
In a single- pass counterflow heat exchanger, 10000 of water enter at 60 and cool
20000 of an oil having a specific heat of o,50 from 200 to 150. If the over-all heattransfer coefficient is 50, determine the surface are required.
Determine the outlet temperature of the oil in Pro. 11-6 for the same initial
temperatures of the fluids if the flow arrangements is one shell pass and two tube
passes, but with the same total area and average over-all heat-transfer coefficient
as the unit in Prob. 11-6
Water is heated while flowing through a pipe by steam condensing on the outside of
the pipe. (a) Assuming a uniform over-all conductance along the pipe, derive an
expression for the water temperature as a function of distance from the entrance.
(b) For an over-all conductance of 100, based on the inside diameter of 2 in, a
steam temperature of 220, and a water-flow rate of 500, calculate the length
required to raise the water temperature from 60 to 150.
At a rate of 5.43 gpm, water at 80 enters a No. 18 BWG8% in. condenser tube made
of nickel chromium steel (k). The tube is 10 long and its outside is heated by steam
condensing at 120 F. Under these conditions the average heat-transfer coefficient
on the steam side may be taken as 2000. On the interior of the tube, however, there
is a scale having a thermal conductance equivalent to 1000. (a) Calculate the over-
hall heat-transfer coefficient U per square foot of exterior surface area, (b) Calculate
the exit temperature of the water.
Dry air is cooled from 150 to 100, while flowing at the rate of 10000 in a simple
adiabatic counterflow heat exchanger, by means of cold air which enters at 60 and
flows at a rate of 12500. It is planned to lengthen the heat exchanger so that
100000 of air can be cooled from 150 to 80 with a counterflow current of air at
12500 entering at 60. Assuming that the specific heat of the air is constant,
calculate the ratio of the length of the new heat exchanger to the length of the
original
