SPCH 275:

Public Speaking
Informative Speech Guidelines
Basic Assignment
You are tasked to deliver an informative presentation lasting 5-7 minutes that uses documented research and
integrates effective use of visual aids.
Submission Requirements
Typed outline (hardcopy)
Typed endnotes list (hardcopy)
PowerPoint (submitted to Dropbox)
Topics
Topics for this assignment are your choice, but keep in mind the basic suggestion that you want to pick
something that is of interest to you. I would also suggest that you pick something about which you can find a
sufficient amount of research. Your textbooks chapter on informative speaking provides a number of
examples that should help you start brainstorming ideas for this.
Presentation
Individual presentation lasting 5-7 minutes
Must integrate PowerPoint (or similar program) into the delivery
Must orally document the research sources
Your presentation may not be a presentation used in another class.
PowerPoint
It should follow the order of your presentation.
You want to rehearse giving your presentation and advancing the slides.
Use slides to introduce and conclude your presentation.
Generally, you should be able to do this with fewer than 10-12 slides.
Make sure that you edit these carefully.
Research
Instead of Google, go straight to the DeVry University Library system (library.devry.edu) for your
preliminary searching.
You should document at least 5 quality sources in an endnotes list.
Use proper APA style for the entries.
Delivery
Start your rehearsal early to integrate both your PowerPoint and oral documentation of your evidence.
Document the source of evidence before providing the information it contains.
You may use your outline, notes, etc. when you speak, but make sure that it doesnt become a
distraction.
Remember, dont make the amateur mistake of talking to the screen; keep the focus on you.

Sources meet standards of effective research.
o Sources are current relative to topic (Usually 5 years or less old).
o Sources are credible (No Wikipedia, unnamed web sources, or biased groups)
o Sources are comprehensive (Go for journal articles).
Endnotes list corresponds with the evidence numbering system used on the outline.
