General Questions
Which Interface do I need?
It depends on the application. Both of these interfaces transform historical data to create models of what happened during the batch process:
the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface (PIFTBOInt) uses the FactoryTalk Batch electronic batch record (event journal) to create batches and sub batches (phases) in the
FactoryTalk Historian SE Batch Database
the PI Batch Generator (PIBaGen) Interface uses the events from the FactoryTalk Historian SE archive to create batches and sub batches (phases) in the FactoryTalk
Historian SE Batch Database. Click here for a PIBaGen YouTube video
Do these Interfaces get created as an icon in the FactoryTalk Directory (FTD) like the FTHSE "Production Historian" or the FTLDx Interfaces?
No. Both Interfaces are configured using the Interface Configuration Utility (ICU) and do not appear as an icon in the FTD Explorer Window.
Are these Interfaces visible in the System Management Tools (SMT) using the Interfaces Plug-in?
Not by default. However, after ICU configuration they will be visible in SMT > Interfaces > Interface List.
Do these Interfaces support buffering?
No. Unlike the RA FTLD Interface (and most other OSIsoft Interfaces), these interfaces are not UniInt based and do not support buffering. Note: While the Interface
Configuration Utility will allow you to select a buffering option, buffering will not function. For more information, refer to the appropriate User's Guide.
Can these Interfaces be configured for fail over (redundancy)?
No. Unlike the RA FTLD Interface (and most other OSIsoft Interfaces), these interfaces are not UniInt based and cannot be configured for fail over (redundancy). Redundancy
is not required because these interfaces feature a recovery mode that allows them to recover from down time. For more information, refer to the appropriate User's Guide.
Can these Interfaces be used with Collectives?
Yes. However, the PIBaGen interface has some limitations. For more information, refer to the appropriate User's Guide.

The Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface

What is the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface (PIFTBOInt)?
The FactoryTalk Historian Batch OEM Interface (PIFTBOInt) collects batch related data from the electronic batch record (event journal) generated by FactoryTalk Batch and
sends them to FT Historian SE server. The FT Batch OEM Interface populates the following FT Historian SE databases:
batch database
module database
point database
How is the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface installed?
The media (or equivalent download) must be obtained from Rockwell Automation. This interface uses a Rockwell Software installation.
What documentation does the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface include?
The media's Redist folder contains:
1. Release Notes
2. Installation & Configuration Guide
3. User's Guide
Are they any known issues with the initial release of the FT Batch OEM Interface documentation?
Yes. Step 23 on page 19 of the Installation and Configuration Guide implies that the FT Batch OEM Interface can be collocated with the FTLD Interface. However, as indicated
on page 7, the FT Batch OEM Interface must be installed on a dedicate host.
Does the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface require a dedicated host?
Yes, currently a dedicated host is required. For more information, refer to the Supported Architectures section of the Installation and Configuration Guide.
Can the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface be installed on workstation OS such as Windows 7?
Yes. For more information, refer to the System Requirements section of the Release Notes.
Can the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface be installed on a drive other than C?
You can choose the destination drive only if no other FactoryTalk Historian components have been previously installed on the computer.
How is it licensed?
Refer to the Licensing section in the Installation and Configuration Guide (attached).
What is the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface point source?
FTBOINT. For more information, refer to the Starting and Verifying the Batch Interface section of the Installation and Configuration Guide.
What is the version of the initial release of the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface and what version of the FactoryTalk Services Platform (FTSP) does it include?
The initial release (April 2013) is v1.0.2.1 and includes FTSP v2.51 (CPR 9 SR 5.1).
Can the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface be installed on a host with a different version of the FactoryTalk Services Platform?
Yes, provided it is v2.40 (CPR 9 SR 4) or higher. However, the recommended FTSP version is what shipped with the Interface.
By default, does the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface display in the System Management Tools' Interfaces plug-in?
No. You must first register the interface using the Interface Configuration Utility (ICU).

The OSIsoft PI Batch Generator Interface Questions

What is the PI Batch Generator Interface (PIBaGen)?
PI Batch Generator (PIBaGen) collects data from the FactoryTalk Historian Server (from the data archive and the module database), generates batch data and writes the batch
data to the FactoryTalk Historian Server in the Batch Database. PIBaGen is used when there is no native Interface to generate and store batch data in the FactoryTalk Historian
System, such as FactoryTalk Batch. PIBaGen automatically generates PIUnitBatches, PIBatches and PISubBatches for each PIUnit that is configured and registered. For more
information, refer to the attached PIBaGen User's Guide.
How is the PI Batch Generator Interface installed?
The interface is installed by default with the FT Historian Server. It can be installed on a non-server host using PIBaGen.msi located in \Redist\Enterprise.
What documentation does the PI Batch Generator Interface include?
Subsequent to installation, the \Program Files(x86)\Rockwell Software\FactoryTalk Historian\PIPC\Interfaces\PIBaGen folder contains:
1. Release Notes
2. User's Guide (PIBaGen.doc)
Are they any known issues with the PI Batch Generator Interface documentation?
Yes. Version 2.0.5.1 of PIBaGen.doc erroneously states "This manual is for PIBaGen 2.0.4.0..." on page 1.
Does the PI Batch Generator Interface require a dedicated host?
A dedicated host is not required and OSI recommends installation on a Server node. For more information, refer to the Interface Installation section of the User's Guide.
Can the PI Batch Generator Interface be installed on workstation OS such as Windows 7?
The recommended OS for PIBaGen is Server 2008 R2 SP1 (x64). However, the PIBaGen v2.0.5.1 installation will fail and report the following error: Initialization Error for PI
Batch Generator (PIBaGen) Interface 2.0.5.1 Setup. To work around this error, locate the folder where the installation files were unzipped and replace the existing Setup.ini with
the Setup.ini attached to this Answer.
Can the PI Batch Generator Interface be installed on a drive other than C?
Yes. However, some of the prerequisites will always go to C.
By default, does the PI Batch Generator Interface display in the System Management Tools' Interfaces plug-in?
No. You must first register the interface using the Interface Configuration Utility (ICU).
How is it licensed?
This interface is subject to the RA Automation Licensing Agreement, but no FactoryTalk Activation file is required.

BatchView Questions
What is FactoryTalk Historian BatchView?
FactoryTalk Historian BatchView is used to view FT Historian SE batch data. It is an Add-in for FactoryTalk ProcessBook and MS Excel (as opposed to a stand alone
application). It can be used with both the PIBaGen Interface and the FactoryTalk Batch OEM Interface. Click here for an 'Introduction to BatchView' YouTube video.
What documentation does BatchView include?
Using PI BatchView.pdf is attached. Subsequent to installation, the \PIPC\Batch folder contain Release Notes (ReadMe.htm).
Are they any known issues with the documentation?
No.
Can FactoryTalk VantagePoint access batch data like BatchView?
While FactoryTalk VantagePoint (FTVP) does not currently have "BatchView-like" functionality, a connection to the batch data can be established using a FTVP OLEDB
Connector and the PI OLEDB provider. For more information, refer to Using FactoryTalk Historian and the PIOLEDB Provider.PDF attached to 65354 - FactoryTalk Historian SE
and the OSIsoft PI OLEDB Provider (PIOLEDB).
