CARRIER AGGREGATION

The majority of Operators started LTE Networks on a single frequency band at a

given area like 1800 MHz and 700 MHz and due to the capacity requirements and
carrier aggregation data rates, Operators have added other LTE frequency like LTE
2600 MHz as an example and therefore more frequencies being used for LTE
networks. The reasons are fixed capacity of each band, Interference between
Operators and towers.
Going forward, the Carrier aggregation will be the main solution for simplifying
multiband traffic management resource sharing between the LTE networks with
current already deployed networks like 2G and 3G. Sharing of resources will also be
of concern by operators as the deployment of LTE continues since LTE Network will
have a combination of new carrier aggregation devices and non-carrier aggregation
devices.
Technically, it is possible to use a single band and if left to service providers they
will prefer deploying a low frequency as possible considering the good propagation
in the low frequency is much better compared to high frequency bands but this is
not always the case as they have to follow the Government regulation rules
regarding frequency assignment.
Therefore LTE1800 and LTE2600 are used in city based scenario with a lot of
buildings and obstructions as they travel shorter distance. LTE800 is therefore used
in rural areas where a single Base station can cover a wider area.
Currently, Operators are using LTE1800 and LTE2600 for IBS/DAS sites.

Why do we need different LTE band 1 (2100), 2 (1900), 3

(1800), 4 (1700/2100), 5(850), 7 (2600), 8(900), 17(700),
20(800) - N910F, N910C?
is it possible to keep single band only?
There are three main reasons:
1) Fixed capacity of each band. Each band has a maximum amount of data it can carry
shared between all users connected in a certain area. So to allow more people to connect you
need to have more bands active.
2) Interference between operators. If two or more operators used the same band then there
would be interference between the handsets and cell towers. So it is necessary that each
operator is assigned a different band to ensure interference doesn't occur.

3) Interference between towers. If two or more towers use the same band there would be
interference. So by having multiple bands assigned, an operator can spread out the towers
and the frequencies used to minimise .interference. Furthermore with careful frequency
planning you can increase the number of customers who can use your service at the same
location.
Technically yes, it is possible top use a single band. And if left to the service providers they
would always prefer as low a frequency as possible (e.g. 450 MHz) since the propagation is
much better.
That said there are two limitations:
1. These are licensed spectrums, so service providers don't always have a choice since they
need to purchase a license from a government to be able to use a specific spectrum.
2. Radio frequency bands are still finite in capacity, so even though there has been a great
increase in capacity, i.e. bandwidth) from the days of analog (1G) to LTE (4G) it still is a
shared resource. Yes you can design more optimal overlay architectures with
macro/micro/nano/pico cells, etc. but I think you get the point.

Diff of LTE 800 lte 1800 and 2600

LTE1800 and LTE2600 are particularly used in city-based scenario with a lot of buildings
and obstructions as they travel shorter distance.
LTE800 is used in rural settings where a single BS can cover a wide are.
