fluorescent)
Dry and wet particles, including wet particle suspension vehicles, and particle
concentrations shall be in accordance with ASTM E 709-95

Generally, Wet Visible Black Magnetic Particles shall be use for examination, brand
of contrast pain/magnetic particles should be:
-

Contrast paint: NABAKEM SM -15 or equivalent

Magnetic particles: NABAKEM MP-35 or equivalent

6.

METHOD OF EXAMINATION AND MAGNETIZATION TECHNIQUE

Examination shall be done by the continuous method; that is, the magnetizing
current remains on while the examination medium is being applied and while excess
of the examination medium is being removed.

Alternative or direct current electromagnetic yokes, shall be used as a magnetizing

force.

Continuous method reference to part 9.2 of this procedure.

7.

SURFACE CONDITION

Satisfactory results are usually obtained when the surfaces are in the as - welded
conditions.

However, where surface irregularities could mask indications due to discontinuities,

surface preparation by grinding or machining maybe necessary and employed.

Prior to the examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at
least 25mm shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and
spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the examination.

Cleaning maybe accomplished using detergents, organic solvents, descaling

solutions, paint removers, vapor degreasing, sand or grit blasting, or ultrasonic
cleaning methods.

If coatings are left on the part in the area being examined, it must be demonstrated
that indications can be detected through the existing maximum coating thickness
applied. The demonstration shall be in accordance with Appendix I of this
procedure.

When coatings are applied temporarily to uncoated surfaces only in amounts

sufficient to enhance particle contrast, it must be demonstrated that indications can
be detected through the enhancement coating. The demonstration shall be in
accordance with Appendix I of this procedure

CALIBRATION
The applied magnetic field shall have sufficient strength to produce satisfactory
indications.

The magnetizing power of all yokes shall be checked by their lifting power in
accordance the following requirements:

Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke shall have a lifting power at least 4.5
kg at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.

Each direct current or permanent magnetic yoke shall have a lifting power at least
18.1 kg at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.
Each weight shall be weighed with a scale from a reputable manufacturer and
stenciled with the applicable nominal weight prior to first use. A weight need only be
verified again if damaged in a manner that could have caused potential loss of
material.
Prior to use, the lifting power of electromagnetic yokes shall have been checked
within the past year.
The lifting power of permanent magnetic yokes shall be checked daily prior to use.
The lifting power of all yokes shall be checked whenever the yoke has been damaged
or repaired.
A field strength indicator shall be used to check the adequacy or direction and
strength of the magnetizing field and shall be used by positioning the indicator on the
surface to be examined. The field strength is indicated when a clearly defined line of
magnetic particles form across the face of the indicator and when the magnetic
particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force. When a clearly
defined line of particle is not formed in the desired direction, the magnetizing
technique shall be changed or adjusted.

9.2

Examination coverage

All examinations shall be conducted with sufficient field overlap to ensure 100%
coverage at the required sensitivity (as described in section 8).

Whenever possible further directions of magnetization may be employed to further

establish indications of low intensity.

Typical sequence of operations to inspect a weld

Clean area to be tested
Apply contrast paint
Apply magnetisism to the component
Apply ferro-magnetic ink to the component during magnatising.
Iterpret the test area.
Post clean and de-magnatise if required.

At least two separate examinations shall be performed on each area.

During second examination, the lines of magnetic flux shall be approximately
perpendicular to those used during the first examination.

With non-fluorescent particles, the examination is performed using visible light. A

minimum light intensity of 100 fc (1000 Lux) is required to ensure adequate sensitivity
during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light source, technique used,
and light level verification is required to be demonstrated one time, documented, and
maintained on file.

EVALUATION

All indications shall be evaluated in term of the acceptance standard of the

referencing Code Section.

Discontinuities on or near the surface are indicated by retention of the examination

medium. However, localized surface irregularities due to machinery marks or other
surface conditions may produce false indications.

Board areas of particle accumulation, which might mask indications from

discontinuities, are prohibited, an such areas shall be cleaned and re-examined.

12.

13.

DEMAGNETIZATION

If residual magnetism in the part could interfere with subsequent processing or

usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion of the examination.

Alternating Current (AC) yokes shall be used for localized demagnetization by

placing the poles on the surface moving them around the area, and slowly
withdrawing the AC yokes while it is still energized.

Care should be exercised to ensure that the part is entirely removed from the
influenced of the AC yokes before the demagnetizing force is discontinued.
POST INSPECTION CLEANING
Post cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle materials could interfere with
subsequent processing or with service requirements. Post cleaning techniques shall
be as follows:

13.1 The drying of wet particle and subsequent removal by brushing of use of
compressed air.
13.2 Removal of wet particle by flushing with solvent.
13.3 Any other techniques which may be used if they do not interfere with subsequent
requirements
14. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

*. Evaluation of indications.

- Any indication which is believed to be nonrelevant shall be reexamined to

verify whether or not actual defects are present. Surface conditioning may
precede the reexamination. Nonrelevant indications which would mask
indications of defects are unacceptable.
- Relevant indications are those which result from unacceptable mechanical
discontinuities. Linear indications are those indications in which the length is
more than three time the width. Rounded indications are indications which are
circular or elliptical with the length less than three times the with.
- An indication of a discontinuity may be larger than the discontinuity that causes
it, however, the size of the indication and not the size of the discontinuity is the
basis of acceptance or rejection.
*. Acceptance Standard. The following relevant indications are unacceptable.
- Any cracks or linear indications.
- Rounded indications with dimensions greater than 3/16 in. (5.0 mm).
- Four or more rounded indications in a line separated by 1/16 in. (2.0 mm) or
less edge to edge.
Ten or more rounded indications in any 6 sq in. (3870 mm2) of surface with the
major dimension of this area not to exceed 6 in. (150 mm) with the area taken in
the most unfavorable location relative to the indications being evaluated.
15. HSE REQUIRMENTS
TTA Company shall comply, abide and enforce on its employees any rules,
regulations and standards on health, safety and environmental protection as
provided project publish manuals policies and procedures or as otherwise
required by the Vietnamese Laws pertaining to Occupational Safety and Health.

16. EXAMINATION RECORDS

- Mechanical discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by the retention of

the examination medium. All indications are not necessarily defects, however
certain metallurgical discontinuities and magnetic permeability variations may
produce similar indications
which are not relevant to the detection of
unacceptable discontinuities.
