This report presents the site investigation works for the project named
Kerja-Kerja Kerosakan Struktur Di Bangunan Universiti Malaysia Sabah as
requested by the client, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The scope of work for
this site investigation is in carrying out the subsurface investigation field
works. There are two parties involved field work and lab work in this
investigation. The party who conduct the field work is Kumpulan IKRAM
(Sabah) Sdn Bhd. Whilst, the party who conduct the lab work is Chemsain
Konsultant Sdn Bhd.

Adequate site investigation is of importance to the civil engineer for the
successful completion of any building project. The purpose of conducting a
site investigation (SI) is to produce a durable and has low maintenance
costs, depends upon an adequate understanding of the nature of the
ground. This understanding comes from an appreciation of the distribution of the
materials in the ground, and their properties and behaviour under various influences
and constraints during the construction and lifetime of the structure. An adequate
and properly structured site investigation is therefore an essential part of
any civil engineering or building project. There are a few of primary
objective of a site investigation is to determine as accurately as may
required:

The
The
The
The

different soil or rock strata

Other specific information, when needed, such as, the chemical

nature and sequence of strata

ground water conditions at the site
physical properties of soil and rock underlying the site
mechanical properties, such as strength and compressibility of

composition

of

the

groundwater,

and

the

foundations of adjacent structure

Besides, site investigation should be organized to obtain all possible
information toward a thorough understanding of the subsurface condition
and

probable

foundation

behaviour.

According

to

detailed

site

investigation report given, there are two type of investigation are carry
out, that are field investigation and laboratory testing investigation. In the
field investigation, borehole drilling, standard penetration test (SPT), soil
sampling and groundwater level measurement were carry out to
conducting site investigation. In the laboratory testing investigation,
classification test, triaxial strength tests, one dimensional consolidation
test, rock strength test and chemical test were carry out in order to
construct good design building.

According from our group discussion, we all agree with the following
statement that is low site investigation cost leads to high project cost. The
appropriate information or data is the keystone of any successful design.
Site investigation is one of the first steps of any construction projects. The
purpose of a soil subsurface investigation is to provide data concerning
the engineering properties of the soil for the proper design and safe
construction

of

the

project.

The

site

investigation

phase

of

any

geotechnical design plays a vital role to provide the geotechnical engineer

by the most appropriate data to ensure that the design data represent the
investigated soil. Inadequate soil investigation may contribute to either a
significantly over designed foundations, that is not cost-effective, or an
under designed foundations, which may lead to potential failures.
Insufficient geotechnical investigation is one of the first sources of
projects delays, disputes, claims, and projects cost overruns. This paper
aims to focus on the impact of varying the scope of the site investigation
process on the financial risk of construction projects. Another goal is to
compare the cost of extra site investigation with the repairing or
reconstruction cost result from improper site investigation. The results of
limited site investigation scope are clearly shown in a recycling factory at
the 6th of October city government, Egypt, which suffer from cost overrun
and long delays. The apparent savings due to making inadequate site
investigation leads cost overrun by about 64.2%of the project cost.
