Literature Review
The term servant leadership has not been a familiar term in the literature as
it has not been very old concept. However, in the recent world, several
organizations have been deploying servant leadership for being successful in
the competitive market. The concept of servant leadership was introduced by
Greenleaf (1970). He suggested that the leader needs to be at the place of
servant for employees to assist them in the organizational tasks. A servant
leader is the one who prioritizes the needs of employees and serves beyond
employees to fulfill needs of customers, and other stakeholders of the
organization (Bambale, 2014).
In the last decade, the concept of servant leadership has been largely
discussed by most of western scholars and researchers (e.g. Sendjaya and
Sarros, 2002; Liden et al., 2008; and van Dierendonck, 2011). Contrary to
this, several other studies have also noted the influence of servant
leadership on attitudes and performance of subordinated (e.g. Ehrhart, 2004;
and Neubert et al., 2008). In the recent past, several researchers have
analyzed the mediating role of servant leadership on multiple outcomes of
organizations such as promotions (Neubert et al., 2008), service climate
(Walumbwa et al., 2010), and organizational justice (Mayer et al., 2008).
Walumbwa et al. (2010) has noted that there is need to conduct studies
regarding impact of servant leadership on attitudes of subordinates. At the
same time, previous studies regarding psychological influences of servant
leadership on behaviors and performance of subordinates have not been
adequate to analyse this topic area.
The social exchange theory suggests that when there is high quality
exchange between subordinate and leader, there is trustworthy relationship
