Course Objectives:

Understand how to use place value to round multi-digit whole numbers.

Understand how to fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers using the four

operations.
Explain how to use place value to round multi-digit whole numbers.
Identify the correct operation to use when fluently adding and subtracting multidigit whole numbers.
Standards:
MGSE4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi digit arithmetic.
MGSE4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard
algorithm. Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
Course Evaluation:
Grade Point Configuration
90-100 Points A
80-90 Points

70-80 Points

60-70 Points

50-60 Points

Assignments:
Students will create 2 word problems that involve using place value to round
multi-digit numbers. They must be creative and accurate with an answer key attached.
Students will be practicing solving word problems during enrichment time. (10 points)
Students will be given practice fluency problems to solve every Friday that
include problems that test students knowledge of adding and subtracting multi-digit

whole numbers using the four operations (This will be done via computer). (5 weeks x 5
points per week= 25 points total)
Students will be given weekly discussion where they have a math word problem
to solve and they must explain how they solved the problem in words. The word
problems will be focused around place value, and add/subtracting multi-digit numbers.
Students will not be able to see each others discussion posts until they have made an
initial post first. They must also respond to one other persons post in discussion board.
(5 weeks x 5 points per discussion= 25 points)

Assessments:
Students will have weekly post tests that collaborate with the lesson regarding
place value and multidigit algorithms. (5 weeks x 4 points per week= 20 points)
Students will have a midterm and final exam reviewing the material covered in
the unit on math skills/standards discussed in this course description. (40 points- 10 for
midterm, 30 for final exam)

Resources for Teaching & Assessments:

Powtoon This will be used for students to present their group projects.
IXL Math This will be used for students to access their individual accounts and practice
problems based upon the skills that they are learning.
Guided Instruction Practice Questions As apart of the instructors guided instruction
time, students will be able to access the guided instruction questions from the above
site.
Post Test Questions A selection of questions will come from the above link where it will
then be transferred into a Google Doc and given to students as a Post Test.

BrainPop This resource will be used as an introduction to some and refresher to others
on the particular skills they will be learning

Learning Objectives Scenario
Assessing:
In my P-12 Learning Module, the 4th Grade Math Standards will be focused on place value,
rounding, and adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers so there will be several different ways in
which the participants will be assessed. The students must actively participate in 3 different
discussion boards in which they must create a thread post and respond to at least one other
classmate regarding the assigned topic. Class discussion boards will be done via Google
Classroom. Next, the second assessment method will include students having two assignments
where they must solve multiple word problems using one of the four operations as well as use
place value to help round multi-digit numbers. These assignments will be completed using the
online resource IXL. As a performance assessment, students will be participating in a group
project centered around the skills students have learned which include rounding multi-digit
numbers and using the four operations to solve problems. Students will act as teachers when
they present their projects. They will present word problems to the class using Powtoon.
Moreover, the final assessment method includes a post test of the content that has been taught.
Students will be given the post test with several multiple choice questions via Google Forms.
Formative Assessing:
Formative assessments are used to check students understanding of the content/material as
the learning is being taken place. Unlike summative assessments, formative assessments are
used frequently and give the instructor an idea of what to review before completion of the
lesson/unit. Students will be assessed each day either by discussion boards or interactive
fluency practice. Each day I will evaluate the formative assessments and allow them to guide
my lessons for the following days by assessing what students know and what they need to
understand. If needed, I will reteach the lessons for the day.
Performance Assessment
http://teacher.scholastic.com/professional/assessment/perfassess.htm
Performance assessments allows teachers to evaluate students progress from continuous
classroom interactions with materials as well as their peers. Examples of some components of
performance assessments include developmental checklists, portfolios, summary reports, etc.

The benefits of performance assessments include evaluating the whole child, allowing
students to express their knowledge in different ways, involve children in their own learning, etc.
Authentic Assessment
http://www.eduplace.com/rdg/res/litass/auth.html
Authentic assessments are aimed to assess various types of literacy abilities. When working on
an authentic assessment, the task can be engaging for the student. Students learn and practice
how to apply the important knowledge and skills theyve acquired for authentic purposes.
Authentic assessment is another name for performance assessment.
Portfolio Assessment
http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/columnists/mcdonald/mcdonald025.shtml
Student portfolio assessments are used as an alternative to the traditional paper, pencil
assessments. With this particular type of assessment, students are allowed to be involved in the
entire assessment process and offers them the opportunity for reflection over their work.
Portfolios offer valuable data on what students know and what they have learned over a period
of time.
Assessing Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning involves not only the students working together, but also the involvement
of the teacher with students. The following are the five key elements to collaborative learning:
positive interdependence, individual accountability, face to face interaction, small group social
skills, and group processing. Making use of collaborative learning can allow for great assessing
and learning among students.
