PHYSICAL EDUCATION

AHMADWARIS KHAIRKHAH
INTRO TO BASKETBALL/GRADE 9-12

Common Core Standards:


Standard 1: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 2: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 3: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they
apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Lesson Summary:
Students will focus on everyday fitness to keep their body in a healthy condition. Students will also test their
physical skills to see their abilities and how they can improve. They will also apply strategic basketball skills and
apply it to their games. Each student will evaluate each others skills and help one another improve their
weaknesses. Classmates will demonstrate what they learned and put it to use so they can be tested.

Estimated Duration:
The lesson will be up to 250 minutes long due to 50 minute class periods every day in high school. Some
classes may take more than one day on a lesson varying on their level and learning pace.

Commentary:
I expect my students to come in everyday in a uniform and to try their best, coming ready to learn and
leaving with their task completed. Students will take the beginning 10 minutes of the class to free play which will
get them hooked on the lesson plan.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:

First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will free play, which will also contribute to their daily warm-up.
Students will be excited to learn because they are getting the fitness they need while having fun.

15 minutes: I will review the basics on basketball and ask students what they know. Students will share to me and
the class what they already know, so I can decipher what to teach.

10 minutes: Students will perform dribbling drills with the basketball. The students will practice their dribbling skills
by running and walking with the basketballs.
10 minutes: Students will now perform passing drills with the basketball. The students will be paired in twos and
start to perform bounce passes, chest passes, and overhead passes to each other.
Last 5 minutes: I will be taking attendance always at the end of the class so that I know that nobody has left the
class earlier or cut class. This is another way of having students not missing a day of Phys Ed class.

Day 2:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will free play, which will also contribute to their daily warm-up.
Students will be excited to learn because they are getting the fitness they need while having fun.
15 minutes: I will demonstrate the offense which is all the shooting drills that the students will perform. For example
free throw shots, three point shots, and two point shots/layups.
10 minutes: There will be at least 4-6 students on each basketball court and every basketball court will be assigned
to perform a different objective. On one court students will be performing layups, second court will be shooting free
throws, third court will be shooting mid-range shots, and the fourth court will be shooting three point shots.
10 minutes: Each group will rotate on to a different court within these 20 minutes and I will be going around
observing the students progress. Also correcting students on their jump shots and dribbling as they run to perform
a layup.

Day 3:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will free play, which will also contribute to their daily warm-up.
Students will be excited to learn because they are getting the fitness they need while having fun.

15 minutes: I will demonstrate the defensive drills. For example blocking the shooter, guarding the shooter and
offensive players. Also boxing out the offense to grab the defensive rebounds.
10 minutes: There will be groups of four on every court and for each court there will be a different objective for the
students. On each court there will be two classmates playing offense and the other two classmates will be playing
defense. One court will perform blocking the ball, second court will perform just guarding the offensive player, and
the third court will perform only grabbing the defensive rebounds.
10 minutes: Students will now rotate going on to the offensive role so that the other two classmates could try
defending. After this the groups will rotate on to a different court so that everyone has a chance on, rebounding,
blocking, and guarding the ball on defense. I will be walking around correcting students on these tasks and
showing them how to improve.

Day 4:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will free play, which will also contribute to their daily warm-up.
Students will be excited to learn because they are getting the fitness they need while having fun.
15 minutes: I will demonstrate the basic rules on basketball and the vocabulary on it. Students will have to pay
attention to todays class for the future games we will be playing and for the exam that we will have at the end of
the semester. Classmates will be focused on the key terms which are fouling, out of bounds, double dribbling,
traveling, rebound, layup, free throw, three pointers, two pointers, etc.
10 minutes: We will review the study guide and I will have students ask question and answer questions. Students
will also be allowed to use their cell phones to look up key terms from the app I give them. After this I will assign
students to teams of 3-4 for a tournament. There will be two winning teams at the end of the tournament that will vs
each other for the championship.
10 minutes: Students will practice with their teams on separate courts getting ready for the tournament. I will be
observing them on all the tasks that we have performed in the semester to see how they use those tasks with their
teams.

class earlier or cut class. This is another way of having students not missing a day of Phys Ed class.

Day 5:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will free play, which will also contribute to their daily warm-up.
Students will be excited to learn because they are getting the fitness they need while having fun.

15 minutes: Students will watch the remaining two winning teams play a full-court game for the championship from
the bleachers.
20 minutes: I will pass out the exam to the students and they will have 20 minutes to finish it.

class earlier or cut class. This is another way of having students not missing a day of Phys Ed class.

Pre-Assessment:
Students will be doing there warm-ups before class is in session and will be observed by the teacher on
how well they are shooting and dribbling the ball. They will be asked questions every time we meet after their
warm-up on the basics of basketball. This way I will know who is on track and whos not on track.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will be observing students on how well they know the game of basketball every time that we meet. This is how
I will base there grades off which will be 20%.

Post-Assessment:
I will be giving an exam at the end of the semester which will be based on everything we have learned throughout
the semester. This exam will be short and students will be given 20 minutes to take the exam. Anyone that needs extra
time can inform me at the end.

Scoring Guidelines:
There will be 10 multiple choice questions and each question is worth 10 points. A total of 100 points
to score and 60 is a passing grade. This exam will be 50% of every students grade.

Differentiated Instructional Support


Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students:
The changes that can be made in the class when we have gifted students is repeating instructions and also
assigning students in the gifted persons group to repeat the rules of the game to he/she until they understand it.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:
Everything is about teamwork so no student will be left behind or no team will let their teammate be
behind. I will be making sure every student has a basketball so nobody is left out. Also writing the schedule on

the board will make it easier for the gifted students on what they will be doing every 10 or 15 minutes of the
class that day.

Homework Options and Home Connections


Students will be required to practice the drills that we perform after school or at home. They will also be given an
app that covers the basics on basketball rules that can be used on their cell phones, iPad, pc, etc.

Interdisciplinary Connections
We will be using teamwork in a Basketball game and the connection between a community in society.

For teachers

Whistle, cell phone, 30 basketballs, music, and projector.

For students

Uniforms, Cell phones, lock, sneakers.
