Course Objectives:
1. Understand fundamental electrical characteristics of waveguides and
transmission lines through electromagnetic field analysis.
2. Understand the basic properties of Polarization and Ferrite materials
composition in the case of waveguide components.
3. Understand the multiport junction concept for splitting the microwave
energy in a desired direction.
4. Understand the function, design, and integration of the major
microwave components like oscillator, modulator, power amplifier,
filter, and mixer in building a Microwave test bench setup for
measurements.
Course Outcomes:
On successful completion of the course module students will be able to
1. Gain knowledge of transmission lines and waveguide structures.
2. How they are used as elements in impedance matching and filter
circuits.
3. Apply analysis methods to determine circuit properties of passive or
active microwave devices.
4. Gain knowledge and understanding of microwave analysis methods
and distinguish between M-type and O-type tubes.
5. Analyze and measure various microwave parameters using a
Microwave bench set up.

After the completion of the course, the course outcomes assessment is
evaluated using the following methods
i.

Mid Exams,
End Exams, and
Course End Survey (by feedback)

I. Mid exams: The weightage of mid marks for 25 consists of subjective


(descriptive) 15, objective -10 (Conducted by university through on line
system at College level with 20 Multiple choice questions with a
weightage of 0.5 Mark each). The objective examination is for 20 minutes
duration. The subjective examination is for 120 minutes duration. Each
subjective type test question paper shall contain 4 questions and all
questions need to be answered. The Objective examination marks10, and
subjective examination marks 15 added for finalizing internal marks 25.
The better of the two tests will be taken for internal marks. As the syllabus
is framed for 8 units, the 1st mid examination (both Objective and
Subjective) is conducted in 1-4 units and second test in 5-8 units of each
subject in a semester.
SAMPLE QUESTIONS:
Subjective-I
1. Draw the block diagram of a delay line filter which produces a 3-pole
Chebyshev low pass filter characteristic with 0.5db ripple in the pass
band? In the pulse repetition frequency is 10KHZ, calculate the
maximum unambiguous range?
2. a. Draw the block diagram of IF Doppler filter bank? Draw its frequency
response

characteristics?

b. Calculate Doppler frequency shift (fd) when the relative velocity of


target with respect to radar is 50 knots at a transmitted frequency of
80MHZ.
3. a. What is a delay line canceller? Illustrate the concept of blind speeds
based on the frequency response of a single delay line canceller.
Discuss the factors limiting the performance of an MTI system.

The evaluation of attainment of COs in MID exams is conducted and
percentage of attainment of CO is benchmarked as a minimum of 40% in
mid exams as per the Quality Assessment Committee of the institution.

Table 1.1 and corresponding graph is shown in Fig 1.1.

II. End Exams: The end semester examination is conducted by university
at college covering the topics of all units for 70 marks.
Part: A contains a mandatory question (Brainstorming / Thought provoking
/ case study) for 22 marks.
Part: B has 6 questions (One from each Unit). The student has to answer
3out of 6 questions in Part B and carries a weightage of 16 marks each.
The evaluation of the attainment of CO is conducted on the basis of
University semester end examination as shown in Table 1.2 and
corresponding graph is shown in Fig 1.2.
