2. Overview of the TCG-1450 and

TCG-1451

2.1. Overview of Function

The TCG-1450 and TCG-1451 equipment cases make drive testing with
TEMS Investigation practical. The cases keep external devices securely in
place, while greatly simplifying the task of connecting them to the PC.
The TCG-1450 and the TCG-1451 are identically equipped, except for the
mobile phone holders. The TCG-1450 accommodates up to four Sony
Ericsson T610, T616, or T618 TEMS mobile phones. The TCG-1451
accommodates up to two Sony Ericsson mobiles of the same types and up to
two Nokia 6230 test mobiles.
Both cases are equipped with a GPS unit, a 7-port USB hub, and an 8-port
USB-to-RS-232 converter for connecting all external devices to the PC
running TEMS Investigation GSM. In the TCG-1450, all connectors on the
8-port USB-to-RS-232 converter will be occupied since the Sony Ericsson
mobiles use RS-232. The GPS is therefore connected to the USB hub
through another (single-port) USB-to-RS-232 converter that is integrated with
the power supply unit. No such arrangement is necessary in the TCG-1451,
where the GPS can be plugged into a free port on the 8-port converter.
The cases are powered with 12 V DC from the vehicle cigarette lighter outlet.
Inside the case, the power is distributed to the two cigarette lighter outlets on
the main panel (next to the XLR-type power inlet) and to the power supply
unit. This unit in turn supplies power to the USB hub and the mobiles. One of
the two cigarette lighter outlets on the connector panel is used to power
supply the GPS unit, and the other one can be used to power supply the PC
running TEMS Investigation (via a vehicle adapter).
In what follows, the TCG-1450 and TCG-1451 are usually referred to jointly
as “the Case” (with a capital C) if no difference exists between the two models
regarding the point under discussion. Wherever differences do exist, each of
the cases is named individually.

2.2. Using the Case with TEMS Investigation

Please note the following:
The Case must be connected to 12 V DC and to the PC before TEMS
Investigation is started. Otherwise TEMS Investigation will not detect the
external devices (mobile phones and GPS).

2.3. Compatibility

2.3.1. Compatibility with Mobile Phones

The TCG-1450 is intended to contain Sony Ericsson T610, T616, or T618
TEMS mobiles.
The TCG-1451 is intended to contain Sony Ericsson T610, T616, or T618
TEMS mobiles and Nokia 6230 test mobiles.

2.3.2. Compatibility with TEMS Investigation

The Case is intended for use with TEMS Investigation GSM 5.0.

3. Installation, Details on
Components, Handling

3.1. Vehicle Installation of the Case

The Case is primarily intended for installation in a vehicle for drive testing. It
can however also be used in other environments as long as 12 V DC power
can be supplied.

3.1.1. Seat Mounting Kit

For best possible
support during
Passenger seat
driving, use the
seat mounting kit
Case
to fasten the Case
to the passenger
seat. The Case is Safety belt

then kept safely in

place by means of
a belt wrapped
round the seat
and attached to
the Case with
snap-hooks.

3.1.2. Adaptation for Right-hand Driven Vehicles

The mounting of the interior of the Case is adapted for left-hand driven
vehicles. The TCG-1450 can easily be adapted to right-hand driven vehicles:
• Open the four screws located at the bottom of the case (accessed from
the outside).

6
Chapter 3. Installation, Details on Components, Handling

• Lift the interior of the case, rotate it 180 degrees, and replace it into the
case. Tighten the screws in the bottom.

Note: This operation can only be performed on the TCG-1450. In the

TCG-1451, the case lid will not close if the Nokia mobile phone
holders are placed along the side where the case locking devices
are.

3.2. Power Supply

Power is supplied to the Case through a cable that should be connected to
the vehicle power system. The cable comes with a universal plug so that it
can be plugged into a vehicle outlet. The universal plug fits cigarette lighter
outlets as well as 12 mm power outlets.

The accepted input voltage range is 10.5–16 V DC.

Note: It is very important not to supply the Case with a voltage

exceeding 16 V. The Case cannot be powered directly by a
vehicle with a 24 V power system.

The center pin connector should be connected to the positive (+) pole and the
outer shield to the negative (–) pole of the power source.

+

Universal plug, connected to vehicle power system

For safety reasons the universal plug is equipped with a car-type 8 A fuse
and an LED for fuse check. Spare fuses are delivered along with the Case in
a plastic bag containing consumables.
The power cable connects to an XLR-type socket inside the Case. The
polarities are as indicated in the figure below.

WARNING: If you choose to construct your own power cable to be

able to connect directly to a screw terminal or other kind of
power outlet, be sure to connect an 8 A fuse in series with
the positive (+) lead. Otherwise the two cigarette lighter
outlets next to the XLR-type connector will be unfused,
which may cause a fire hazard.

The total power consumption of the Case when nothing is connected to the
two cigarette lighter outlets corresponds to a current not exceeding 2 A.
Making use of either or both of the cigarette lighter outlets will naturally
increase the power consumption.

3.3. Power Supply Unit

A power supply unit is installed in the Case. It incorporates five voltage
regulators and a single-port USB-to-RS-232 converter.
Along the right edge of the power supply unit are four connectors:
• Fan is the power outlet to an optional cooling fan. No fan is necessary in
the TCG-1450 or TCG-1451.
• 12V DC In is the power inlet to the power supply unit, and it is connected
to the XLR-type power input.
• 12V DC Out1 and 12V DC Out2 are power outlets for accessories.
Neither of them is used in the TCG-1450 or TCG-1451.
The outlet marked USB-Hub is a 5 V supply outlet for the 7-port USB hub.
The four outlets marked Mobile/UE are used for charging the mobile phones.
Connection cables for charging either (TCG-1450:) four Sony Ericsson
mobiles or (TCG-1451:) two Sony Ericsson and two Nokia mobiles are
delivered with the case.

8
Chapter 3. Installation, Details on Components, Handling

A single-port USB-to-RS-232 converter is integrated with the power supply

unit. This converter is used only in the TCG-1450, where the GPS antenna is
plugged into the RS-232 port. The USB type B connector on the converter is
connected to the 7-port USB hub.
At the top of the power supply unit are found a 5 A fuse and an LED which
lights up when power is applied to the Case. Note that the fuse only protects
equipment powered by the power supply unit; it does not protect the two
cigarette lighter outlets next to the XLR-type power inlet. These are only
protected by the 8 A fuse in the power cable universal plug.

3.4. Mobile Phone Holders

All cases are equipped with four mobile-specific holders:
• The TCG-1450 has four holders for Sony Ericsson T610, T616, or T618
mobiles.
• The TCG-1451 has two holders for Sony Ericsson T610, T616, or T618
mobiles, and two holders for Nokia 6230 mobiles.
To install a mobile, just insert it in a holder of the correct type, pushing it down
until it locks in place.

3.5. USB Hub

A 7-port USB hub allows the UE USB ports and the 8-port USB-to-RS-232
converter integrated with the power supply unit to be simultaneously
connected to one USB port on the PC.
The USB hub is power supplied from the power supply unit.

3.6. 8-port USB-to-RS-232 Serial Converter

The task of the 8-port USB-to-RS-232 serial converter is to convert data and
transfer it between the USB hub on the one hand and the Sony Ericsson
mobiles and the GPS on the other. (These devices are equipped with an RS-
232 port only.)
In order for the PC to detect the COM ports of the converters, some driver
files (delivered with TEMS Investigation) must be installed on the PC. See
appendix A.
Once a serial converter is correctly installed, the PC operating system will
detect additional COM ports. These ports will be assigned the next available

LZT 108 7075 R1B 9

TCG-1450/TCG-1451 GSM Equipment Case – User’s Manual

COM numbers; what numbers will be used depends on what ports have
already been defined, so it cannot be predicted generally. It is possible to
inspect and change COM numbers from the Windows Device Manager.
The COM ports will always be detected by the PC as long as the Case is
connected to the PC, whether or not any equipment is installed in it. In other
words, disconnecting the device connected to a converter port does not affect
detection of the port.

Note: The Case must be connected to the PC before TEMS

Investigation is started. Otherwise TEMS Investigation will not
detect the external devices.

3.7. Mobile Phones

3.7.1. Sony Ericsson TEMS Mobiles

A Sony Ericsson mobile has a serial port to which is connected a split cable
with two serial connectors. Of these, the one labeled TEMS is used for
communication with TEMS Investigation. The connector labeled DATA is
used for data services. Each is plugged into a port on the 8-port USB-to-RS-
232 converter.
Each Sony Ericsson mobile is power supplied by a charging cable which
plugs into the serial cable (when that is connected) and whose other end is
plugged into an outlet in the power supply unit.

3.7.2. Nokia Mobiles

A Nokia mobile is equipped with a USB port and is connected by a USB cable
to a port on the 7-port USB hub. Both TEMS measurements and data service
measurements are transferred via USB; no split cable is used.
The charging cable of the Nokia mobile has one end connected to the phone
holder. The other end of the cable plugs into an outlet in the power supply
unit.

10
Chapter 3. Installation, Details on Components, Handling

3.7.3. Interacting with TEMS Investigation

To establish contact with the mobiles in TEMS Investigation, you must identify
them in that application. How to do this is explained in the TEMS Investigation
documentation.

3.8. GPS
The GPS unit delivered with the Case is a Garmin GPS 35 TracPak
(GPS35PC version), a complete GPS receiver unit with embedded antenna.
It tracks up to twelve satellites at a time, giving one-second navigation
updates. The GPS is mounted in a water-resistant housing in order to
withstand rugged operating conditions. Delivered with a mounted magnetic
plate, it is suited for outside mounting for example on a vehicle roof or hood.
Technical data on the GPS unit is provided in section 5.3. For further
information about the product, visit the Garmin web site at www.garmin.com.
If you need to change the earth datum setting in the GPS, please contact
TEMS technical support.
To install a Garmin 35 PC in the Case, two connections are required:
• The GPS is powered by 12 V DC through a power cable connected to one
of the cigarette lighter outlets in the Case. Insert the cigarette lighter plug
into a free cigarette lighter outlet.
• Data transfer to the PC takes place through a serial cable. Connect the
9-pin serial connector of that cable to
• (TCG-1450:) the RS-232 port on the power supply unit
• (TCG-1451:) port no. 5 on the 8-port USB-to-RS-232 converter.

3.8.1. Interacting with TEMS Investigation

To establish contact with the GPS in TEMS Investigation, you must identify
the GPS unit in the application. How to do this is explained in the TEMS
Investigation user manual (which see).

3.9. External Antennas

Four magnetic mount external antennas (magnetic bases with a monopole
radiator) are delivered with the Case. The purpose of using external

antennas, mounted for example on the vehicle roof or hood, is to amplify the
signal strength and to uniform the reception conditions at the mobile phones.
To connect an external antenna to a mobile phone holder, just take the short
coaxial cable coming from the holder and plug its FME connector into the
mating connector on the cable mounted to the monopole antenna.

3.10. Locking the Case

A padlock (4-digit combination lock) is provided for locking the Case.

Note: Do not keep the Case closed during operation, or the
