INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Definition : Complex Process of using language and non-verbal signals to send and receive messages.
People do not come together to communicate in random ways.
We communicate in contexts that are defined by the goals sought in particular kinds of
sociocultural situations.
Transaction model specifies that senders and receivers are simultaneously influenced by their
physical surroundings, the goals defined by sociocultural situations in which they communicate,
and the social relationships that influence the kinds of messages they send and receive.

Communication is an Interpersonal Context

Interpersonal communication is a process of using languages and nonverbal cues to send and
receive messages (between individuals) that are untended to arouse particular kinds of meanings.

Interpersonal Communication takes place in the dyad.

Dyad- two people communicating with each other
As individuals come to know one another better, their relationship tends to move from impersonal
to personal; that is, they become increasingly close and intimate.
Interpersonal Communication takes place in the dyad.

De Fleur simply expands the Shannon & weaver model of communication by inserting the Mass Media
device and suggested the communication process is circular as well as it gives possible two way feedback.
In this whole communication process, noise may occur at any stage. Defleur pictures the source,
transmitter, receiver and destination as separate phases of mass communication.
Defleurs another important suggestion in this model is Feedback Device. This feedback device
helps to analyse the target audience (as separate from the receivers). Here, all these receivers are not
considering as a target audience because the target audience will make some kind of feedback which will
helps to find the target audience by using feedback device.
One of the important aspect of the communication model is two way communication process which is
recommended by Defleur. And also this model is the first one which introduce both two way feedback
and targeted audience in the communication process.

Interpersonal Communication is shaped by social roles

Social role is the set of behaviours expected by a certain individual in a society.
Difference between social role and social status:
Social role is our duty to play what we are, while social status is the word that defined our role.
For example: A woman becomes a mother when she has a child. Therefore, she occupies the status of a
mother, and shell be called as an apparent mother. Her social role is to play as a mother by giving
maternal care and affection, especially a warm interaction to her child (among other things).
-

Interpersonal communication is shaped by social roles, because each individual possesses his or
her main objective. For example: You would expect a doctor to play a role (in reality) of a doctor,
who cures his patient/s. You cannot expect a doctor to play the role in the society as a nurse,
owing to the difference.

Interpersonal Communicaiton is uniquely irreversible.

-

You cannot take back the messages you have conveyed, either positive or negative, and whether
accidentally expressed or not. You can never withdraw the words you have verbalized, as if this
principle of irreversibility states its very impossible to do so.

Interpersonal communication is unrepeatable.

-

Interpersonal communication is unrepeatable, simply because everything is constantly changing.

As a result, you can never recapture the same moment. You can try again, but improbable to
repeat the same actions or words you have made.
