Amaya Holliday POW #4

11/9/15

Process:
For the first problem I got seven as the highest impossible number. I did this b
y making two columns, possible and impossibles. I knew that one and two wouldnt w
ork because no combinations of three and five go evenly into them. Three obvious
ly works. Four would not work as a possible score because three and five cant mak
e any combination that evenly fit into it. Five would obviously work as well. Si
x works because three times two multiplies evenly into it. Seven wouldnt work bec
ause no combinations of three and five go in evenly. Seven is the last impossibl
e combination because eight and nine would work because three and five combined
evenly into them. This combination of three and five works on every number after
seven.
I examined some other scoring systems such as one and two and three and four. Th
rough these different scoring systems, I found that some scoring systems can hav
e highest impossible scores and some do not have any impossible scores. One or t
wo can divide evenly into anything, resulting in no impossible score. Three and
four do have a highest impossible score of five though.
Conclusion
A.
I found out the highest possible score when, five points are for field goals an
d three are for touchdowns, which makes seven. This is possible because no combi
nation of three and five make seven. Any numbers above seven is either a multipl
e of five, three or the combination of the two can be added together. I am reall
y confident about my answer and to prove that it works I picked two random numbe
rs, thirty-five and one hundred twenty-four, both 5 and three can go into these
point evenly. This works because if you multiply five times seven you get thirty
-five and if you multiply five times twenty you get one hundred and then you mul
tiply three times eight resulting in 24. One hundred plus twenty-four equals one
hundred twenty-four. This proves that any number above seven can be a possible
score.

B.
A rule I found to find the highest possible score was: that the lower yo
ur two scoring points were the lower your highest impossible score will be. Anot
her rule, I found was that you know that the numbers that were smaller than your
smallest score point will always be impossible. For example, the point three an
d five, one and two are impossible because three cant goes into them and obviousl
y neither can five.
Extension

The Happy Campers soccer team scores their goals a little differently, t
hey count goals that are scored on the left side of the goal as 3 points and goa
ls scored on the right side 1 point. The coachs wants to know if any of the score
are impossible. Please find the highest impossible score the Happy Campers can
score.
Evaluation
I think all POWs are worthwhile because they make me think in a differen
t way than regular homework. I dont think I learned a lot content wise, but it is
teaching me perseverance. I would make this POW smaller or take away one of th
e questions. I always enjoy working on POWs because I like that it is like a puz
zle opposed to a work sheet. I think this POW was the hardest POW we have ever d
one just because I had some trouble understanding the questions.
