It allows you to swap an ECM from a “donor” vehicle without having to program itto the test vehicle's ignition key. (cont'd) 11-C-11 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Procedures (cont'd) Cut a temporary ignition key for the test vehicle with a non-immobilizer key blank Remove the ECM from the test vahicle. ‘Write the test vehicle's VIN on the ECM you just removed to avoid confusing it with the donor vehicle's ECM. |. Remove the known-good ECM from the donor vehicle, and install tin the test vehicle ‘Tape the donor vehicle's ignition key head-to-head to the test vehicle's temporary key, The ECM will recognize the code from the donor vehicle's key and allow you to start the engine with the temporary key. ‘TEMPORARY 6. After completing your tests, reinstall both ECM, and destroy the temporary key. 11-C-12 ‘Symptom Chart Listed below are symptoms and probable causes for problems that DO NOT cause the Malfunction indicator Lamp (MIL) to ‘come on. Fuel injector Timing and Duration ‘The ECM contains memories for the basic discharge durations at various engine speeds and manifold airflow rates. The basic discharge duration, after being read out from the memory, is further modified by signals sent from various sensors to obtain the final discharge duration. le Air Controt {dle Air Control Valve (IAC Valve) When the engine is cold, the A/C compressor is on, the transmission is in gear, the brake pedal ie depressed, or the alter- nator is charging, the ECM controls current to the IAC Valve to maintain the correct idle speed, Ignition Timing Control ‘© The ECM/PCM contains memories for basic ignition timing’at various engine speeds and manifold air flow rates. Ignition timing is also adjusted for engine coolant temperature. '® knock controt system was adopted which sets the idea! ignition timing for the octane rating of the gasoline used.*? ‘Other Control Functions 1. Starting Control When the engine is started, the ECM provides a rich mixture by incre: 2. Fuel Pump Control ‘¢ When the ignition switch is initially turned on, the ECM supplies ground to the PGM-FI main relay that supplies current to the fuel pump for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system. ‘¢ When the engine is running, the ECM supplies ground to the PGM-Fl main relay that supplies current to the fuel pump. '* When the engine is not running and the ignition is on, the ECM cuts ground to the PGM-FI main relay which cuts ‘current to the fuel pump. 1a fuel injector dur (cont'd) 11-C-23 PGM-FI System System Description (cont'd) 3, Fuel Cut-off Control © During deceleration with the throttle valve closed, current to the fuel injectors is cut off to improve fuel economy at speeds over the 990 epm (min. ‘© Ful cut-off action also takes place at the following engine speeds*, regardless of the position of the thrattle vaive, 10 protect the engine from over-rewing. + 81423, D144, D16W3 engine: 6,800 rpm (rnin) + D16W4 engine: 6,900 rpm (min) With A/T model, when the vehicle stops, the ECM cuts the fuel at engine speed over 5,000 rpm (rin). 4, NC Compressor Clutch Relay . When the ECM receives a demand for cooling from the air conditioning system, it delays the compressor from being ‘energized, and enriches the mixture to assure smooth transition to the A/C mode. Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Purge Control Solenoid Valve When the engine coolant temperature is above 68°C (154°F}, the ECM controls the EVAP purge contro! solenoid valve Which controls vacuum to the EVAP purge control canister ECM Fail-safe/Back-up Functions 1. Fail-safe Function When an abnormality occurs in a signal from a sensor, the ECM ignores that signal and assumes a pre-programmed value for that sensor that allows the engine to continue to run, 2. Back-up Funetion When an abnormality occurs in the ECM itsel system in order to permit minimat driving, the fuel injectors are controlled by a back-up circuit independent of the ‘Self-diagnosis Function (Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL}) : ‘When an abnormality occurs in a signal from a sensor, the ECM supplies ground for the MIL and stores the DTC in erasable memory. When the ignition is initially turned on, the ECM supplies ground for the ML for two seconds to ‘check the ML. bulb condition. 4. Two Driving Cycle Detection Method To prevent false indications, the “two driving cycle detection method” is used for the TWC deterioration detection ‘and other self-diagnostic functions. When an abnormality occurs, the ECM stores it in its memory. When the same abnormality recurs after switch is turned OFF and ON (I) again, the ECM informs the driver by turning on the MM. 11-C-24 Engine Control Module (ECM) [The matfunction Indicator Lamp | {Miu never comes on teven for two seconds) after ignition Is turned ON (i cota nrasn eee tone ON ee corse icone an =e No. ‘Check the inertia switch } SM Sisconnect the inertia witch 3P connector 2.
