Gods Promise: It Will Happen
in Bethlehem
Last week we lit the second advent candle. We
were reminded of the Gods faithfulness to his promises, and their fulfillment in Immanuel. This week we light the third advent candle, and see Gods promise that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Micah 5:1-2
Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops;
siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
A boy named David was born in the district of
Ephrathah in Bethlehem and grew up tending his father Jesses sheep. When the time came for Samuel to anoint a new king over Israel, God sent him to Jesses house to anoint one of his sons. The unlikely ruler would be David. He would become the greatest king of Israel, and Bethlehem is now known as the City of David.
Long after Davids reign, Micah foretold that
God would again choose a king from Bethlehem, in the land of Ephrathah. Many years would pass before wise men from the East followed a star in search of the newborn king of the Jews. After meeting with these men, King Herod called for the scribes and chief priests and asked them what they knew. These religious leaders directed Herods attention to Micahs prophecy, and to Bethlehem.
Gods promise was fulfilled; as a ruler would
again come from this insignificant town and once again Gods choice involved the most unlikely beginninga baby, born in a stable.
