1 Inform Master, engine room, pilot station of ETA / ETD.


2 Hoist / Lower flags G or H as appropriate.
3 Confirm with pilot-station or pilot following: -

(a) Expected Time of Pilot embarking / dis-embarking.


(b) Side on which the pilot ladder is to be rigged and Height above sea level
(c) Pilot embarkation / dis-embarkation position.
Give appropriate notice to crew & instructions for rigging the equipment. Ensure Ladder is clean. ( Also
Refer check list D-036 )

5 Ensure responsible Deck Officer in attendance to oversee embarking / disembarking of Pilots. with one
more rating, wakie talkie for communication with bridge, & Pilot escorted throughout.

6 Attending officer to ensure that ladders, manropes are clean and clear of cargo residues.
7 When freeboard more than 9 meters the combination ladder is to be rigged as per SOLAS
8 Confirm adequate illumination overside and on deck pilot-entry point.*
9 Passage from pilot boarding to accom. entrance must be clear of obstructions & hazards*
10 Confirm lifebuoy with light and heaving line ready at pilot boarding point.
11 Check walkie-talkies charged, operational and ready for use.
Make log entry in Movement Book.
E.g. grease / oil / rags. During winter months, sufficient deck hands to be summoned in ample time to

* clear the passage of ice / snow and liberally sprinkle street-salt

Where Pilot boarding / leaving operations are carried out by helicopter, the procedures laid down in the
** ICS guide to helicopter / ship will be followed in conjunction with the shipboard safety c/list for helicopter /
ship operations.

NAVIGATION UNDER PILOTAGE


1 Master - Pilot exchange regarding passage plan discussed with bridge team.
2 Lookout posted as required and instructed as to duties.
3 Vessels position to be continuously monitored and plotted frequently using all available navigational aids
and visual observations, including leading lights, parallel indexing, Chart Plotter/ECDIS etc., as may be
fitted to vessel.

4 **Timings of all pertinent events to be accurately noted in bridge movement book. The Bell book is to be
regarded as the diary of events affecting the vessels passage, from which select will be entered into the
Deck log. Timings to include, but are not limited to : passing buoys, bridges, landmarks, light- houses,
buoys, piers, entry in canal, lock, dock & departure from same, instructions to E/R for speed variation,
notices , vessel manoeuvring actions e.g. being swung short to stbd. off lock entrance by tugs etc.

OOW to ensure helmsman repeats all orders loud & clear & confirm correctly executed.
Compare compasses early on each course so as to be ready in the event of gyro failure.
Confirm that both anchors are at all times ready for use.
Communication with the focsle to be frequently checked, by all means available.[Talk-back / Public
Address system to be kept ON as back up.]

9 During Long Pilotage ( more than 6 Hours), It is NOT mandatory for Master to be present on bridge at all
the time, In order to maintain compliance with Rest hours Master may reschedule Second mate and Third mate watches to 6 on - 6 off,

so that
Master and Chief Mate are available to for assisting on bridge as and when required and Master can study the passage plan and prevailing
circumstances and Judciously decide when he is required to be on bridge and when chief mate can substitute him , Ofcourse in all circumstances
when OOW or Pilot feel that Master presence is required he may be summoned immediately . Non compliance if any to maintain rest hour to be
logged with reasons and NCR sent to UOSM .

10 At any time, if in doubt as to vessels position or the pilots intention, advise the master immediately and
clarify with the pilot. If safety of vessel is in question donot hesitate to take necessary corrective action
even if it OVERRIDES pilot's order.

NOTE 1 : At all times, even with pilot on board, the safe navigational conduct of the vessel rests with the MASTER and the OOW.
NOTE2 : In case data - logger is fitted and operational, engine movements need not be noted by hand, but the data - logger printout must be attached into
movement book.

NOTE 3 : The use of personal Telephones by Bridge Team, including Pilots is prohibhited on the Bridge, during Navigation, except for Emergency situations.
