DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY, INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Students will be divided into:
1. Two groups (A, B, C, D) for teaching/learning activities at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar.
2. Each group shall have a group leader who will be responsible to ensure that the targets laid are met.
CSU ACTIVITIES (CSU will be opened from 8am - 7pm)
Practical Skills
1. Universal Precautions, OT etiquette, scrubbing, gowning and gloving.
2. Exposure to Basic POP and back slabs Materials and techniques.
3. exposure to POP cutter, splitter and POP Shears
4. Use of triangular bandage, collar and cuff for upper limb injuries.
5. Use of upper limb and lower limb splints and immobilizers.
6. Use of static and dynamic braces e.g. elbow strap for tennis elbow, wrist and foot drop splint, knee braces for ligament injuries.
7. Common orthopedic implants their indications and associated complications.
8. Proper use of cervical collar for C-Spine injuries
9. Proper systematic approach to read different musculoskeletal X-rays
Clinical Skills
1. Technique of shoulder examination pertaining to specific musculoskeletal problems and its applied anatomy.
2. Technique of elbow examination and common diagnostic clinical tests.
3. Technique of wrist and hand examination.
4. Technique of spine examination and applied anatomy.
5. Technique of hip and limb length discrepancy clinical examination.
6. Technique of knee examination (sports and degenerative knees)
7. Technique of foot and ankle clinical examination.

PLEASE READ THROUGH THESE INSTRUCTIONS

[WR = Ward rounds discussion] Students are required to know cases in the lecturer's ward before ward rounds.
[CPD = Case Presentation and Discussion] Students are required to choose 1-2 cases with good clinical findings for presentation and discussion.
[OPD = OutPatient specialist clinic Discussion] Group not rostered for OPD are required to be in the plaster and procedure room.
[Ward work] Students are required to be in their respective ward. Group A & B alternate between Ward 2B & 5A weekly.
Ward work includes clerking new cases, assisting HO & nurses in ward duties, preparing cases for CP/WRD etc.
[*Shoulder/Spine/*Hip/*Knee/Hand,Elbow,Foot&Ankle(HEFA) = Clinical examination & applied anatomy & common orthopaedic conditions] * Video available
[A&E, Ward, Trauma OT] Students to rotate everyday: 2-3 students in A&E, 4-5 students in wards, 2-3 students in Trauma OT.
**[Ward] Students to join night rounds at 8.00pm.
***[Trauma OT] Students to be in Trauma OT (Level 4) from 5.00pm to 9.00pm (NOT 8.00pm to 10.00pm).
[Census] Student attends census held by HTJ Orthopedic department
[GOT & TRAUMA OT] GOT on level 3. Room 4 & 5 runs on Tuesday & Thursday while room 2 on the rest of week days. Trauma OT is level 4 on Daily basis. 2 to 3 students each room only.
Please contact sister Rosalinsd IMU to arrange. Briefing & OT tour, Introduction to OT OT staff every second Monday 8-10 for the group going to follow OT for that 2 week.
Pre-Opp round is mondatory before going to see surgery, OT list read by 5 pm for the next day & can be access in every orthopeadic wad.
GOT : General Operation Theather
Group leader to spli and make 3 subgroups for OT each for 2 weeks (Monday - Friday) and stact of group Monday briefing by sister rosalind to arrange.

Please contact teachers early to make necessary preparation.
If the teacher is unable to conduct the allocated class, please refer to appendix below.
