Knight of the Sword

The knights of the sword focus on the values of courage,
heroism, and faith as key components of an honorable
life. Sword knights can call upon divine spells granted by
Kiri-Jolith and excel in their use of their eponymous
weapons.

The Novels and other prerequisites

Prerequisites
In order to advance as a knight of the sword, you must
meet the following prerequisites (in addition to the
multiclassing prerequisites for your existing class):

the knights wisdom, one test of his generosity, one

test of his compassion, the restoration of something
that was lost, and single combat with an evil
opponent of at least the same level as the knight of
the sword candidate. The candidate must be
victorious in this combat while demonstrating the
ideals of honor and courage (note that this does not
necessarily mean killing the foe). The knight can
enlist the aid of anyone he wishes to complete the
quest so long as he maintains the ideals of the
knighthood (i.e. does not further the cause of evil).
The exact form of the quest is up to the DM, but it
must include these elements.

Strength 15. Knights of the sword need to be

physically strong, to aid in melee combat.
Wisdom 13. Knights of the sword need to be wise in
more than just the arts martial.
Proficiency in all martial weapons. Knights of the
sword need to be knowledgeable with all the
weapons of war.
Proficiency in heavy armor. Knights of the sword
need to be well-protected when they wade into
combat.
Character level 5th. Only exceptional individuals
are accepted into the ranks of the knights of the
sword.
Complete a special task. To join the knights of the
sword, the petitioning knight must already be a
member in good standing of the knights of the crown
and must, before a knightly council consisting of at
least one knight of the sword, formally petition for
membership in the order of the sword.
The knightly council will then assign the
petitioning knight a quest to prove his honor. The
quest must include the following elements: a journey
of no less than 500 miles and 30 days, three tests of

In the various Dragonlance novels, from their formation in

the 2nd Age through the vast majority of the 4th Age, the
solamnic knights were very restrictive in their
membership, limiting it primarily to male human nobles of
Solamnic birth. Only towards the end of the 4th Age (after
the War of the Lance), did the solamnic knights begin
opening their membership to non-Solamnic humans (and
half-elves), as well as women and those of lower birth.
As the DM of your campaign, it is entirely up to you how
strictly you wish to adhere to the novels. A close
adherence to the novels will preclude many PCs from the
test of honor detailed above.

Strength of Courage

Extra Attack

If you do not already have an Honor score, or your Honor

score is lower, you gain an Honor score of 14 (see the
DMG for the full honor rules).
As a reaction you add your Honor modifier to your AC
against one melee attack that would hit you. To do so,
you must see the attacker and be wielding a melee
weapon.
Once you use this feature you may not use it again until
after a short rest.

Beginning at 2nd level, you can attack twice, instead of

once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Sword Strike
Beginning at 3rd level, when you use your action to
attack, you can reduce the AC of your opponent by your
Honor modifier, until the start of your next turn.
Once you use this feature you may not use it again until
after a short rest.

Order of the Sword Spellcasting Sword Ward

You augment your martial prowess with the ability to
cast spells. See chapter 10 in the PHB for the general
rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 as well for the cleric
spell list.
Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from
the cleric spell list.
Spell Slots. The Knight of the Sword table shows how
many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level
and higher. To cast one o f these spells, you must expend
a slot of the spells level or higher. You regain all
expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
For example, if you know the 1st-level spell shield of
faith and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot
available, you can cast shield of faith using either slot.
Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher. You know
three 1st-level cleric spells of your choice.
The Spells Known column of the Knight of the Sword
table shows when you learn more cleric spells of 1st level
or higher. Each of these spells must be of a level for
which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach
3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st
or 2nd level. Whenever you gain a level in this class, you
can replace one of the cleric spells you know with
another spell of your choice from the cleric spell list. The
new spell must be of a level for which you have spell
slots.
Spellcasting Ability. Honor is your spellcasting ability
for your cleric spells, since you learn your spells through
your adherence to the Code of the Solamnic Knights as
handed down by Paladine and his sons Kiri-Jolith and
Habbakuk. You use your Honor whenever a spell refers
to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your
Honor modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a
cleric spell you cast and when making an attack roll with
one.

Beginning at 4th level, as a reaction you may negate a

spell targeting you whose level is less than or equal to
your Honor modifier.
Once you use this feature you may not use it again until
after a long rest.

Sword and Spell

Beginning at 5th level, when you use your action to cast
a spell, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus
action.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus +

your Honor modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus +
your Honor modifier
