ABSTRACT
Spring, shock absorbers and linkages which connects vehicle to its wheel and allows relative motion between
them are termed as suspension. Springs are helical metal coil which can be pressed or pulled but they have
tendency to return to its original shape and size when released generally springs are used to absorb the shock or
movement by its elastic action. Helical springs are being used in many vehicles as shock absorbers to have
smooth ride, better control over vehicle, maintain correct ground clearance, and keep tyres in contact with road.
This paper focused on analysis of mono suspension spring with varying materials. Here, deflection and shear
stresses of different materials are calculated and validated with analytical equations.

Keywords: .Mono Suspension, Analytical ,FE etc.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. INTRODUCTION
A helical spring stores energy due to resilience and subsequently release it to absorb shock, or to
maintain a force between contacting surfaces which minimizes effect of uneven roads. Shock absorber plays role of
absorbing or dissipating energy, it has to be taken into consideration while designing shock absorber that where the
dissipated energy will go in the absence of suspension vehicles ride becomes uncomfortable and bouncy. A
motorcycle with a mono shock rear suspension, a single shock absorber connects to rear swing arm to motorcycles
frame. This mono shock absorber is located in front of rear wheel and is connected to swing arm by linkages.
In this paper, we are considering the spring of mono suspension system from bike. After dissembling,
the dimensions are taken from spring. Then model of spring is created in Pro-E and imported in FE software. By
applying boundary conditions and load, deflection and shear stresses are calculated which is validated with
analytical equations. In this paper, we considered other materials such as Carbon steel, Monal metal and brass.
The dimension of mono suspension spring are as follows:
Length = 270 mm
Mean dia. = 58 mm
Pitch = 30 mm
Wire dia. = 12 mm
No of turns = 9
Applied Load= 3000N

3. ANALYSIS OF MONO SUSPENSION SPRING BY FE APPROACH

Here, CAD model of spring is created in Pro-E then it has imported in ANSYS software. The constraints are
applied at the end of the spring, and force is applied at the centre to the other side of spring. Shear stress and
deflection are evaluated for different materials.
These are the contours of different materials for deflection and shear stress shown in fig2 to fig 7.

Table-4: Comparison of analytical and FE values

Here, the analytical value of deflection and shear stress of mono suspension spring of different materials are
evaluated which are verified with numerical value. From above table, it has been observed that deflection for carbon
steel is lower than deflection of other materials with same shear stress and the maximum value of deflection is found
in brass with same shear stress.
